9:00—10:00:
Keynote Speaker: Gordon Braxton
Gordon is dedicated to making a difference by speaking out against oppression in all of its many forms. Four years ago, Gordon was a committed activist on race relations committed to combating the oppression of persons of color in America . He has since come to realize that the struggles of all oppressed peoples are very much interrelated and now works to challenge the oppression of women and more specifically, gender violence. Able to contrast his experiences as an African-American with his experiences as a man, he weaves a story of societal oppression that operates on both sides of the continuum and touches all.
10:00—10:15: Break
10:15-12:00: Playing to Win: A Dialogueon the Kobe Bryant Case, Presented by Gordon Braxton
Typically a taboo subject not often discussed, this summer’s alleged sexual assault by Kobe Bryant brought the issue of sexual violence to the national forefront. The case has been heavily covered by the media and has become the conversation of America’s schools, workplaces, and social destinations. Reserving no judgment on the appropriate outcome of the case, Campus Outreach Services sees this as a tremendous opportunity to educate America’s youth on the very important subject matter of sexual assault, healthy sexual interactions, and healthy relationships.
In this interactive case study, the audience will respond to and debate the proposed “facts” of the Kobe Bryant case and decide their relevance and importance in determining if a sexual assault occurred. The audience will be asked to decide the importance of each piece of evidence as it relates to public opinion and relevance to the alleged sexual assault. Core content includes legal definitions of sexual assault, consensual definitions of sexual assault, rape myths, healthy relationships and the influence of alcohol in sexual situations.
12:00—1:00 Lunch (provided)
1:00—2:30: Workshops
Workshop sessions will be presented two times and concurrently
from 1:00—2:15 and 2:30-3:45
A) “Virginia’s Strategies for Male Outreach in Sexual Violence Prevention” Presented by Bradford Perry, Sexual Violence Prevention Coordinator, Virginians Aligned Against Sexual Assault and Robert Franklin, Male Outreach Coordinator, Virginia Department of Health
This session will address both the practical and philosophical reasons for encouraging men to join the movement to end sexual violence. Strategies for ringing anti-rape work to men, and addressing common difficulties that arise along the way will also be discussed. Examples of Virginia’s efforts to engage men to end sexual violence will also be covered, including training organizing, media campaigns, and local initiatives.
(B) Local Efforts to end Sexual Violence
Child Assault Prevention Presenters: Gail Groy, M.A., Licensed School Psychologist, Lauren Storms, MSW and Lindy Swimm, LGSW
This workshop will focus on the Child Assault Prevention (CAP) Program that is currently being piloted by LCSJ/LAWS at three Loudoun County CASA sites and one YAS program site. CAP is funded by a grant from the Virginia Department of Health. The CAP project seeks to end the sexual victimization of children through education of elementary school children, their caregivers and other significant adults in their lives. Recognizing children’s vulnerability to assault, it focuses on children’s problem-solving abilities to help them identify and defuse potentially dangerous situations. © 1995, National Center for Assault Prevention, 606 Delsea Drive, Sewell, NJ 08080.
