In session four, Mr. Jackson Katz will discuss strategies for inspiring
boys and young men to be allies in anti-sexist education and to
actively prevent gender violence. These concrete strategies have grown
out of the work that Katz and his colleagues have done over the past
decade with racially and ethnically diverse populations of college and
high school students, including student-athletes; college men,
including fraternity members and student-athletes; U.S. Marines; and
others. Katz will discuss how both women and men can more effectively
reach boys and men with gender violence prevention messages.
Mr. Katz is one of America's leading anti-sexist male activists. In
1993, he founded the multi-racial, mixed-gender Mentors in Violence
Prevention (MVP) Program, at Northeastern University's Center for the
Study of Sport in Society. MVP is the first large-scale attempt to
enlist high school, collegiate and professional athletes in the fight
against all forms of men's violence against women. Today, MVP is the
most widely utilized gender violence prevention program in college
athletics. It has been implemented in over 85 colleges and
universities. MVP is also being used by the New England Patriots
football club. Since 1997 Katz has been directing the first worldwide
gender violence prevention program in the history of the United States
Marine Corps. He is a member of the Secretary of Defense's Task Force
on Domestic Violence in the military.
Over the past two years, Katz and his colleagues have been implementing
MVP in high schools throughout Jefferson County, Colorado, including
Columbine High School. Mr. Katz is the creator of an award-winning
educational video for college and high school students, entitled "Tough
Guise: Violence, Media, and the Crisis in Masculinity." Tough Guise was
named one of the top ten young adult videos for 2000 by the American
Library Association. His new video, "Wrestling With Manhood," was just
released by the Media Education Foundation.
Jackson Katz has published widely in academic journals and popular
newspapers. He is frequently quoted in the national media, and has
appeared on numerous radio programs in the U.S. & Canada, as well as TV
programs such as The Oprah Winfrey Show, Good Morning America, Montel
Williams, the CBS Evening News, MSNBC and ABC News 20/20. He may be

The dates for the fifth call in the series, Featured Community Programs
Working with Boys and Men, are being determined.
