I have been treated for chronic UTI for the past 5 years. I acquired this UTI
when I was catheterized after abdominal surgery. Now my doctor tells me that the
bacteria is resistant to all antibiotics except Rocephin (which must be given by
injection by a visiting nurse). Also, I have to see an Infectious Disease
Specialist. I am wondering if anyone else has received this medication. Or has
anyone else had this type of persistent difficult UTI. I am becoming frustrated
and even frightened. Thinking that I have acquired an infection that wont go
away after years of antibiotics. Can anyone offer encouragement or information
for me? Thank you.

Hi,
New to this group. I have had many UTI's, the latest being one with the above
diagnosis. Just started with a new Urologist but have had these for years but
never the Gram Positive Cocci.
Can anyone help me in this area.
Thank you - Bonnie
My Story:
I have a history of UTI's (at least every 3 months). I know because of being a
diabetic and having an appointment with lab work then. I do not have symptoms
of the infection except for frequent urination and an unusual odor.
This time I have the above diagnosis on my C&S and am wondering if anyone has
any advice for me. I am going to a urologist but have had only 1 visit thus
far.
Thank you very much - Bonnie
I am a female with autism the aspergers kind.I live in a group home. I have been
treated unfairly about some female medical issues I had by the group home. The
Way I feel I have been treated unfairly about some female medical issues I had
by the group homer is:
On March 27, 2009 when I went to Urgent Care I found out I through a Urine
specimen the Urgent Care took that I had a both a yeast infection and bacterial
infection
I tried explaining to the group home staff person who was with me
1. On Saturday March 21, 2009 I started having painful burning everytime I
urinate
2. On Wednesday March 25, 2009 I noticed a Rash that is on the skin under my
tummy near my legs which this reoccurs
I have been told by doctors that the rash under my tummy is both fungus and
Yeast. My Group home staff thinks at all times that the Rash that is on the skin
under my tummy near my legs which reoccurs caused me to have a Yeast infection
which showed up in my urine specimen and that this would be cured if I use the
cream that is for my rash that is on the skin
The painful Burning everytime I urinate started way before I noticed a Rash that
is on the skin under my tummy near my legs .
My Group home staff thinks at all times that if I have a Rash on the skin under
my tummy near my legs which reoccurs which I am suppose to use cream for will
cure any burning in my urine if I have burning in my urine.
My group home staff does not want to help me when I am feeling burning in my
urine at all in getting to the doctor to get this taken care of and looked at.
How can my Rash that is on the skin under my tummy near my legs which reoccurs
cause me to have a yeast infection that shows up in any urine specimen because I
have been told by doctors that the rash under my tummy is both fungus and Yeast.
Does anyone have this that can relate to me with this?
If you can talk to me please e-mail me at

hello im new my name is laura my problem is since i was 15 i have had
severe pain in both sides of my abdomen then it radiated to my lower
back i immediately thought it was a kidney infection as it came on so
suddenly and it was burning when i went to the loo. however
everything came back clearly thank fully my gp said it was a strain
and that i was making a big thing of it. unfortunatly that put me off
going back about the problem and for three years i suffered in
silence untill two years ago my friend talked me in to going back
they tested me for various things everything came back clear i have
had to fight to get people to listen then last year i had cystitis
and had to do a urine sample but i kept getting cystitis so i had to
keep doing samples so they could see if i was clear my gp discoverd
blood in my urine and refurred me straight to a urologist but the
urologist was really rude made it out to be my back and that it was
all my jobs fault (im a carer). he just said if there is protein in
my urine then my kidneys are leaking or its my back. since this i
have been to physiotherapy they basically cant do anything for me as
its too painful for me to be examined. at the moment i am waiting for
a hospital appointment in march to see a muscular skeletal specialist
and they are assesing for surgery. this week the pain has been
utterly horrendous normally i have tears in my eyes but this was even
worse. i went up to see my gp yesterday thinking it was my back but
she said sounded like a uti i did metion that i have been going to
the loo more often for the last week but it doesnt burn so i didnt
worry.i dont know who to believe anymore as i have one gp telling me
its my back and one telling me its a uti what if the infection has
gone to my kidneys?
Hi, I am Judy and I live in RI. While I am new to this group, I am not new to having UTI's! I seemed to be plagued by them....
I have gotten together a routne which seems to stave them off:
Lots of water loose clothing Cranberry juice and pills with "Pro-biotics" and over the counter UTI remedies vitamin C
Before I came to this regimen, I would get them once every month or two. Have just finished Bactrim for my latest, I was wondering if there is any herbal product which is good. I also read that a suppository is being developed which should help in prevention.
I just wanted to announce to the group that my book on gum disease:
What You Should Know about Gum Disease - ISBN: 978-0-9814855-0-8
is now available at http://gingivitiskiller.com
This book is subtitled: "The Layman's Guide to Fighting Gum Disease"
I hope that many people will find benefit from the book.
David Snape
Moderator of the UTI group.
There are 3 conditions which people call UTIs. One is the actual
urinary tract infection, one is a bladder infection, and the other is
intersitial cystitis. Each has slightly different symptomology, and
as you would expect, a different cause. Pain is definitely a big
warning sign for possible infections.
The mistake many people make is to try and treat the pain or
infection on their own, thinking it will just "get better." It
won't. There is no over-the-counter cure for UTIs, although there
are many things you can do to lessen or relieve the symptoms. Just
because it doesn't hurt anymore doesn't mean it's gone away though.
An untreated infection can work its way even further into the body
and end up causing a kidney infection, and in extreme cases death
from toxic shock. If you're feeling pain in your lower back in
combination with other symptoms of a UTI, be very worried and go to
the doctor immediately, an urgent care clinic even if you can't see
your regular doctor the same or next day.
Cranberry is great. Clinical research shows that 30-35mg of the
condensed tannins (known as PACs) per day has a significant effect on
reducing recurrence of infections. The problem is that most
cranberry pills have no testing of their PAC content, so you have no
idea what amount you're getting. There's only one that does,
TheraCran. Cranberry juice also looses its PAC value the longer it
sits on the shelf, and it's loaded with sugar.
The reason that Cranberry can't be 100% effective is that the E.coli
bacteria responsible for 85% of UTIs has two different fimbriae that
attach to the bladder wall. This is NOT the same E.coli that causes
food poisoning. Cranberry blocks the P-fimbria from attaching, but
there are Type 1 fimbria which may still adhere. Obviously you're
increasing your chances of staying infection-free with regular
cranberry, but not 100%. You can improve your chances of staying UTI-
free even more by following specific hygiene guidelines.
The big fake out there is d-Mannose. While it's true that d-Mannose
blocks the E.coli's Type 1 fimbria from adhering, there's no way for
it to get into the urine, except to inject it into the bladder. As a
sugar, it gets metabolized and it will never get into the urine,
unless you're a diabetic. So, unless you're squirting d-Mannose up
into your bladder, you can assign ZERO benefits to this treatment
option.
What does that leave? Pretty much antibiotics, so long as you
haven't become resistant. And then you follow up with all the good
prevention steps.
Children doing toilet training often get UTIs, that's mostly a
hygiene thing. Post-menopausal women get more UTIs, that's because
the hormone production changes and the immune response to these
bacteria does too. And 3x as many women get UTIs than men, simply
because their urinary tract is 1/3 as long as a man.
Back to the pain though...Get a darn test! It's so easy now to test
for which bacteria might be causing the UTI (there are 5 different
ones), and get appropriate treatment. It used to take 2 days to get
lab results, but there is new technology which is shortening this to
about 45 minutes if your doctor's lab is up on the latest.
Meanwhile, it's rediculous to suffer.
Changing your pH can temporarily relieve symptoms of pain and burning
until you can get to the doctor, but it's NOT a cure.

Hi DeAnna,
I'm not a doctor and you should definitely be working with your doctors
on this.
You could also find some information that might be useful here:
http://tobeinformed.com/UTI
and
Here is an herbal 'remedy': http://tobeinformed.com/uti
Remember to consult with your doctor for proper diagnosis and
treatment.

Hi, I have an eight year old daughter that has been suffering with UTI
since she was 3. If I had to guess, I would say she has been treated
for 25 - 30 infections. She was hospitalized for 5 days a year ago
with a severe kidney infection. She takes 50 mg of a preventative
every day. She also urinates on herself at school at least once a
week and twice a week she will wet the bed. We have been referred to
A.I. DuPont Hospital and Johns Hopkins and still have no answers.
They acknowledge that there is a problem but she still has not been
diagnosed with anything. Some nights she is in a lot of pain and I
have to put a heating pad on her belly in order for her to even
sleep. Can anybody out there help?
Hi Christa,
I have not heard of it, but I do know that you can
get herbal detox drops at http://native-remedy.com
that are designed to help detox the body. They've
also got herbal remedies for Urinary Tract Infections.

Hey Dave,
Have you or anyone else on this board heard of using
dr. christopher's kidney, bladder, colon, and blood
stream herbs to totally detoxify and clean out your
system of pollutants and toxins? I just found out
about it looking around on the net and was wondering
if anyone else has tried this out. I am wanting to
find ways to totally cleanse my organs so I can begin
eating better and absorbing all the nutrients and
minerals.
Much love and light,
Christa

Hi Christa,
Thanks for sharing, and I'm really glad that you are
on the road to recovery. That is a good thing.
And it could help others to know what you are going through.
So, I'm glad you told us about your pain.
I've read that cranberry juice can help to keep
bacteria from adhering to the wall of the bladder.

I have been dealing with getting over a uti and kidney
infection for about a week now. I think the infection
is in my kidneys because I have dealt with major back
pain that starts from my lower back and sometimes up
to my shoulder blades. Does this sound familiar to
anyone? Well I think I am getting better because the
back pain is lightening up but I still have it and it
is totally annoying. I usually run 3 times a week and
can't do that right now. I can't eat chocolate, drink
beer, clean my house without getting tired, have sex,
and it just absolutely is miserable. So I feel
everyone's pain. I am never going forget to drink
atleast 64oz of water a day with some cranberry juice.
This just blows.
Much love and hope everyones innerds get better.

Hi everyone,
I just added a report on Urinary Tract Infections
to the file section of this group.
You can access the file here:
http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/Urinary-Tract-Infections/files/
The report has been done by the National Institutes of Health.
It's about 19 pages and gives a good background on UTI.
