My middle son, left school with no GCSEs at 16. He’s now one of
the top human rights lawyers in London. The trouble is that schools do not fit
children, who think for themselves.
My North London Grammar School did and of the 100 or so in our
sixth form, we think we’ve got more widowers/widows than divorcees. Lots of
ruby weddings too!

One teacher said that my daughter Helen had excellent communication
skills but needed to use them less in lesson time. She saw school
as a challenge. One time they were doing some sort of assessment
and she was bored and so deliberately did badly, she didnt like the teacher
doing the assessment. She was five!
She only really settled to education when she was at college
and later at uni. When she was responible for her own actions and
making her own choices and people werent telling her to do things for which she
could see no purpose at all. She has had part time jobs and
holiday jobs since she was 16 and always gets on well at them. But
she thought rules about stretchiness of trouser fabric and wearing
make-up were irrelevant, and chose to ignore them. She was on permanent
make-up report for the latter part of high school. I was not
willing to do battle each morning over what make up she had on, since she would
have put it on when she got there, or on the bus. AND - she was
wearing very little make-up anyway.
She is 22 in a couple of weeks time, and is now a self
assured hardworking polite and pleasant young woman, currently very anxious as
she gets the results of her finals tomorrow!
Liz - I so agree with you on this one - I'm sure my
seven year old would easily have got a prescription for Ritalin, but I think
he's actually just a normal active seven-year-old boy, who finds sitting still
for hours very hard. He's improved no end in the last 12 months, though
still we have on his report that he can be a little too lively during the
school day!
