Re: [TypeTwo] started metformin

So far I feel pretty good today, so this is great. Actually it is a good thing
to begin with only 1/2 pill daily because if I do have to increase, then it will
be gradual. My sugar was lower this morning which is also good...107...and
that's down from a normal of about 118 to 130 some days. Although some days it
is also 97 or 104...just never know. It's weird.

I did eat a lot of carbs last night, so it was difficult to tell really. We
went out to eat and Ihad a big old turkey burger and some of those big baked
potato fries. It tasted so good, and was so bad for me. Maybe I was testing
the medication to see if it would help even with a big carb meal like that. It
was very good, but sure can't do that too often!

I have used Metformin for a couple of years and it helped my sugar levels a
little almost immediately. It works on making your cells better able to
absorb the sugar in your bloodstream and also provides some blocking of
sugar produced in your liver. Maybe checking your sugar at other times
might show more improvement. My experience is that the gastric distress
will completely disappear in a week or so. I have lots of gastric problems
from the sugar alcohols in candy and other sugar free food and I don't think
that ever gets better :-(

I've been coasting for about 3 years now trying to manage the sugal levels
with diet and exercise alone, but that doesn't seem to do it any longer.
Part of the problem is not being able to exercise because of needing a total
knee replacement, which makes it uncomfortable to walk and ride my
stationary bike.

Anyway, she started me on 1/2 tablet of 500 mg metformin once at day with my
evening meal. So that's just 250 mg of metformin. I felt nauseaus on and
off last evening and today, a bit dizzy, but nothing really bad. I don't
like feeling this way though. Now...my question is....how long does this
medication take to begin to work? I'm not seeing a drop in my sugar levels
last night nor tonight after eating. It actually seems higher than it used
to be. Is that possible?
