Hi, I am a lurker here and appreciate the knowledge of those
on this list.
I have recently learned that I am having trouble controlling
my blood sugar. This came to light while I was in a hospital
trauma center with a broken back. A nurse told me that I
was spilling so much sugar in my urine that it was clogging
the catheterer. Since that wasn't the reason I was in the
trauma center - they tended to treat only the immediate - my
back. After my release, I was in a torso brace for 6 months
and in the beginning of that recovery period, I was somewhat
medicated. If I didn't take the pain meds - soon I was very
miserable and when I DID take them - I was still somewhat
miserable since I couldn't ever seem to clear the cobwebs
from my head.
Anyway, since the accident, I've come to notice gradually that
I have tingling in both legs and both hands/forearms on an
equal basis. Sometimes it is very faint, but at other times I
am just plain uncomfortable and it almost hurts. Sometimes,
it also makes me awkward on my feet. Most of these
sensations I have chalked up to being a result of the broken
back and serious whiplash.
One day I was feeling particularly crappy - and my cleaning
lady's sister had a test kit with her. My blood sugar in the
middle of the afternoon was 154...I work at home, so
eating isn't actually very scheduled and at that time I always
had a can of Dr Pepper in my hand. I checked the internet
about a reading like this and actually didn't find out too
much. A month of so later I felt awful and I asked to have
them check my blood sugar level and it was 254!
Thanks
Kathy
