Description

Welcome to the Traditional and Slow Foods - Coulee Region Yahoo Group! We're an extension of the Weston A. Price Foundation Chapter and budding Slow Foods Convivium .

Join us for discussion of many related items including: nutrition utilizing nutrient-dense foods, organic and biodynamic farming, pasture-feeding of livestock, community-supported farms, honest and informative labeling, prepared parenting and nurturing therapies.

The cows pictured here are Belted Galloways and one Dutch Belted eating what nature created for them-grass and only grass! Cows have four stomachs which creates a fermenting process to digest grass. We cannot do that, so they do it for us. When cows are eating their natural diet, without any added grain fillers, their meat and fat becomes nutrient-dense and highly nutritious! Of course, if the grass or hay in winter has any chemicals in it those will be in the meat also. That is why it is important to find Organic, 100% Grassfed beef.

Belted Galloways are on the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy's Watch list (under "Galloway") and are from the Galloway area of Scotland. They grow a second layer of long hair in the winter to keep warm, and then shed it during the summer months. These attributes makes them particularly suited for the upper Midwest cold winters, and hot summers.

The Dutch Belted is a milking cow and is listed on the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy's Critical list.

You can find more information on these cattle and my farm where they were raised by emailing bellasol.organics@yahoo.com
