Re: [TracesEssentialOils] Spray to kill weevils

If you use essential oils in your home regularly you will find that you will seldom get a bug infestation.  I've never had any weeveils since I started using essential oils all the time.  However, for those nasty pantry bugs (works on crawly and flying) peppermint is generally the essential oil first grabbed.  NOTE: if you have high blood pressure, you may not want to do this because it can get pretty strong and peppermint can raise blood pressure.

That said, take a 2 oz spritzy bottle and add about 15 drops of peppermint essential oil to water in the bottle.  Spray down every place you've seen the buggers or think you may have seen them.  Results of this differ from--first application they were all gone (generally person is speaking of fruit flies) to after spraying down three times a day for a week they were all gone (this person was referring to sugar ants).  The worst offenders seem to be carpenter ants (those big black ickies), the person dealing with those put a diffuser in the bathroom (room affected) and ran it for 1/2 hour every 2 hours for a week (excluding night).

If you can't use peppermint because of high blood pressure, chose an essential oil that you like and use it, you may have to use it a little longer, but it should still do the trick.

Essential oils that are known bug repellers include:
Peppermint
Lemongrass
Rose Geranium
Tea Tree
Lavender
Basil
Bay Laurel

They all work to an extent, and I'm sure there's more, but these are the ones I can think of off of the top of the head.

Make sure you clean out the pantry, put all non affected foods in a safe place and carefully dispose of affected foods.

You may also want to consider diatomaceous dirt.  It is made up of ancient fossilized bugs, the dirt is really their shells, they were very small, the dirt cuts the live bugs' carapice allowing oxygen in and they dehydrate and die.  Wear a mask when you put it out as you don't want to breathe a lot of it, but it is safe for use around pets and children.  You can usually get it at nurseries or feed stores (they mix it into the feed for cows and horses and such to get rid of parasites).

Hi everyone, I am wondering if any of you have used essential oils to
get rid of a weevil infestation? I have read that they don't like bay
leaf, but I don't know that that will actually kill them. Any thoughts?

Thanks Penny, I actually recommended using a turkey baster to ³poof² diatomaceous earth in the cracks and crevices and told her to use peppermint and tea...
