Change and growth take place when a person has risked himself and dares to become involved with experimenting with his own life. – Dr. Herbert A. Otto
The highlight of Sunday's meeting was Joel Duncan's presentation of his thesis called Fireflies which is a service creatively designed to help people overcome social anxiety.
To learn more about his "enlightening" project go to see him at the Ontario College of Art and Design where he and fellow graduating students display their work on Thursday May 4th at 7:00 p.m.To find out how to get there and to learn more about this event go to:http://www.37waysto.ca.
Joel's project demonstrates what a brilliant future is in store for him and what a positive influence he is sure to have making this world a better place.
After the meeting, the group of ten met up again at the local Firkin pub to eat, drink and share merrily about a fascinating range of topics including:
The nuances which may get lost in translation from culture to culture and the difficulty in translating rhythmical poetry particularly from Farci to English or colourful Trinidadian self-expression to the more stiff starchy English. Keep in mind that when you talk about ideas that are beyond the normal constraints of language, misunderstandings can occur, so it may not be your fault.
Etiquette concerning how to deal with people who are unable to stop themselves from long monologues, which prevent others from also sharing their own thoughts to the conversation: being assertive and setting your own personal boundaries was a key.
Good communication occurs when the needs of each person involved is taken into consideration. Recognizing some people who affected with conditions like Asperger's Syndrome may have difficulties in social interactions. It is up to the listener to interrupt the unending flow, which may be hard for sensitive people who suffer from social anxiety. We may not wish to hurt the other person's feelings. It is important, though, to honour your own needs when someone cannot stop talking.
Human rights concerning routine circumcision and using non-violent language to communicate these issues to others and to oneself.
The law of attraction says you attract into your life what you give your energy, focus, and emotions to and what you feel you deserve. Your inner thoughts and feelings projected outward are like a magnet and attract conditions that are in line with those feelings and thoughts. A fun read on the subject: Excuse me, your life is waiting; the astonishing power of feelings by Lynn Grabhorn, which is available through the public library system.
Sharing articles with the newest topic of this week is "Is Your Personality Causing You Stress?"
It may sound hard to believe, but experts say that your personality can actually cause you stress. To a certain extent, your personality might have been determined at birth. However, there are certain characteristics that you might have developed over the years that are now contributing to your stress level. While one cannot change his or her personality overnight, it is certainly possible to change certain habits that may now be causing you stress.
At certain points in your life, you might have been plagued with
worry. It might have been in the wake
of beginning a marriage, starting a new career, or caring for a sick
child. The worry might have
affected you not only emotionally but physically as well. You might
have experienced feelings of
uneasiness, faintness, or breathing troubles...

Wow Rama, thank you for the warm advice. I will kindly take it into
consideration. I have a really busy schedule now and I can hardly find the
time to do things. I will try to join the group once again but as soon as a
job comes up I will try to go there first. Thank you very much for
welcoming me back and I will be glad to join the group once more.
Thanks.
Juan Carlos.

Hi Rama,
This is Juan. Remember me, from last summer? I hope you are well and that
the group is thriving. I am doing well as well. I stopped going to the
social phobia support group because I discovered I had a real bad case of
paranoia - not social phobia. Anyways I have an aquaintance that is

and here is her e-mail. I would like for you to cantact her yourself. This

Thank you very much. This is because I lost the website for toronto social

The newest topic of this week is "Combating Anxiety: The Alternative
Way"
...Perhaps you break out into a cold sweat when you have to deliver a
talk before a group of people. Or perhaps you become nervous when you
have to take a test. There are certainly numerous causes for anxiety.
Similarly, there are a number of treatment options for those
afflicted with the illness. If you don't like the idea of medication,
you might try an alternative approach to battling your anxiety...

You can sit around and do nothing or hide yourself away from people because you are afraid, or you can step outside of your comfort zone and form a peer support group.
This is exactly what our fearless facilitator, Rama, did two years ago when he took the initiative to advertise forming the initial group of three, that we now know and celebrate, as the Toronto Social Phobia and Shyness Support Group.
Although Rama unavoidably was unable to attend the two-year anniversary party at the Grenadier Restaurant on Sunday, nine brave souls showed up, including a couple of newcomers. Only a couple of people fled the scene before the meal arrived.
We shared about how important it is to know our own needs from any relationship in order to attract the right one. If we think that a relationship is going to be too much trouble, as one of the members ruefully admitted, then we may be inadvertently creating a self-fulfilling prophesy or not even making the effort to make new friends.
It does take a tremendous amount of positive energy to create a new relationship, a happy couple told us. They found their match by advertising on an internet dating service and shared that it's important to have to create an attractive ad to stand out from the rest. Both agreed they had many coffee dates for at least a year before they happily discovered each other.
In this conversation we learned that some people prefer a person who is shy and sensitive over someone who is loud and aggressive. Sometimes we get too focused on imagining what the other person is thinking about us instead of knowing what kind of person or relationship will enhance our lives.
Knowing ourselves well and appreciating our strengths is the key. For people who are shy in a society that tends to value outgoing people more, it is difficult sometimes to feel good about ourselves. We need to promote and value ourselves first.
The successful dating couple told the group that it is a numbers game; in other words, you have to "kiss a lot of frogs". They advised the singletons in the group to persist because it is possible to meet someone who appreciates you for being shy or sensitive.
It was an inspiring spring celebration. Thank you, Rama, for creating the group and space to come together for support and encouragement especially when so many of us are lonely and disconnected from our families, friends or communities of origin.
The newest topic of this week is "Turning a Spotlight on Anxiety
Disorders"
...You may be restless at night, tossing and turning in your bed
because of excessive worry. You may find yourself cracking under
pressure, whether when preparing for a test or when you get ready to
report to the boss. But does your uneasiness qualify as actual
anxiety?...

Hi, Personally I have trouble keeping up with all the good progressive

I love this stuff, and try to keep my ear to the ground it's just hard to find

found something that helps.It's the

I also subscribe to their news alert service to keep on top of current

To celebrate, we will meet at Grenadiers' cafe in High Park on Sunday 9th of April, at 5:30. Check our website for details and please email Andonia, who has kindly accepted to organize this dinner, to let her know you are attending or if you have any questions. But don't panic, if

How about we go to a place like the Pickel Barrel or Kelsey's for dinner and use it as a social experiance. I think those places would be reasonable.

I am looking for suggestions concerning a good venue for our anniversary dinner. Last year we had it in a falafel shop at Bathurst and Bloor and everybody enjoyed it. The price was reasonable and the food was good, although my chair leg gave way and I was flat on the ground(the worst scenario for a person with social anxiety :-)
So this year, where
can we go?(I will check the chairs this time :-)

As a tribute to the Persian New Year and those near and dear to us from Iran, this poem is a treasure created by Hafiz from a book called Love Poems by God; 12 Sacred voices from the East and West, 2002.
My Sweet Crushed Angel
You have
not danced so badly, my dear,
trying to hold hands with the Beautiful One.
You have waltzed with great style, my sweet,
crushed angel,
to have even neared God's heart at all.
Our partner is notoriously hard to follow,
and even His best musicians are not always
easy to hear.
So what, if the music has stopped for a while.
So what, if the price of admission to the Divine is out of reach tonight.
So what, my sweetheart, if you lack the ante to gamble for real love.
The mind and body are famous for holding the heart ransom,
but Hafiz knows the Beloved's eternal habits.
Have patience, for He will not be able to resist your longings and charms for long.
I wonder if our fearless facilitator, Rama, will be Under the Azure Dome this weekend at Harbourfront celebrating with music, dance, theatre, film, visual arts, artistic workshops, and a Nowruz Market. This is one of the upcoming cultural events mentioned by Hannah.
Much as I'd like to be there and at the shy guy meeting my time is booked helping to facilitate David Hickey's Crystal Quartz bowl music performances in Hamilton and Winona over the weekend. I will be staying at the Unity Retreat Centre on the mountain until Sunday night.
I live in Yonge/Sheppard area. Im always looking to meet new people and make new friends.

Hey guys,
Just wanted to let you know that the pictures from the Sumo Robot
Challenge are up.
Also an idea for future outings,
The Harbourfront centre during the summer usually have cultural events
each week
See you Sunday,
Hannah :)
Hello Everyone,
I am looking for friends that live near Yonge and Steeles who would
like to meet for a coffee or movie sometimes. Have a nice day.
Sincerely,
Steve
I sent out an e-mail about two weeks ago regarding get togthers outside the meetings and I have a really good idea and that is bowling (5 or 10 pin). I feel it would be good, becuase it will allow us to socialize in a fun environment and to see how we work together as a team. Dinners are also good as we have been having been going to a pub every 3 weeks.
Another idea that I have is going to a city attraction as that is good way to know others. I am thinking of doing this when the weather gets warmer. We could go to the Toronto islands and do a walk along the boardwalk or we could do the high park walk.
We will be discussing ideas for outings in the meeting this coming Sun.
Adam
