Hi, I just read your posting and while I did sign up for the meet up groups, I never did get around to coming to any groups. I'm glad you shared your experiences online, as I can relate to it in everyway. In high school even though I knew the answers to the questions even in my last year my face always turned red when giving an anwer or doing a presentation which was a nitemare. I also felt my body temp rise and started to either blank out, or stutter. When I got to University there were more people in the class room so i just didnt talk and it was horrible sitting in a lecture room with 1,000 people. Even the tutorials were hard enough with just 25 on average. yet I can talk to people on a one to one basis and not stutter or get nervous at all. I now think taking courses online is better for me as an option, it can be done. Its social phobia what your talking about and other things too, your not alone. If you would like you can email me back in private, feel free.

I  never really though that I had a social phobia, but I'm starting to
realize I do, but I don't think it's extreme.

Let me explain why I think I might have social phobia and please tell
me if i'm correct:

1. I just just finished a class where the desks where positioned so
that they form a square, so everyone can see each other. I get really
nervous in class. My body heat increases and I tend to figite with my
glasses. There are times when I want to raise my hand and participate,
but then when I talk, I get so nervous that my voice changes(becomes
less clear) and then there is another sudden raise in my body
temperature.

2. There are some people I don't nervouse talking with. Some people I
ca talk to no problem. But then there are other people that I get
nervous around especially with girls I like (or some other girls). In
those situations, I just blank out. They are talking to me, and there
are things I want to say, but they don't come out as I want them to
and sometimes I just become silent.

3. I get nervouse alot in public. Most of the time, when I am eating
in public, I feel tense. But then there are times when I feel
confident. I am not insecure, but maybe I am because I feel tense most
of the time.

It's my first year university so I'm starting to really notice it. I
met people but none of them have really become my friends. They are
more like people to ask for help or copy answers lol. I guess I can't
really open up to them to start a friendship.

Well, it's nice to let other people know about my problems. This is
the first time I told anyone about this.

Oh yeah, I also get nervous and sweaty when speaking in public, my
mouth gets dry so I tend to swallow my saliva(I don't know how to
describe it).

Dear Group,

I am a fellow social anxiety sufferer. I believe that cognitive
behavioral therapy is *key* to healing & life improvement.

I know that that many SA/SP sufferers are not able to afford ongoing
therapy (steady, full-time work is a struggle for those with chronic
debilitating anxiety) and this type of cognitive restructuring home
study program specifically for anxiety disorders, is a "saving
grace" alternative.

The has helped thousands, and the great thing is that you can work
on it at home everyday (therapy once per week never seemed like it
would be enough) without any monetary worries about continuing with
it, as would can often be the case with office therapy.

I ordered the program out of curiosity, and was so impressed with it
that I got in touch with the program creator, another anxiety
sufferer for near 20 years, who created the program out of sheer
necessity in her own anxiety ridden life, and was healed by it.

I got so much out of the program that I decided to begin promoting
and selling it myself. I wanted to share it with other anxiety
sufferers(whether it be social phobia, generalized anxiety, panic
disorder, agoraphobia) in hope that you might receive the same
relief, regaining of hope, and regaining of life, that thousands of
others have.

Know that your entire thinking structure can change, and when this
happens, unbelievably, those (debilitating) automatic thoughts that
you don't even realize happen, change too. After that, your *life*
changes…

If you'd like to have the Conquering Anxiety Success Program to work
through in your home, you can get it at:

http://www.colba.net/~lifepath/html/programs_books.html

If you follow the program and work hard, I *know* it can help you
change your thoughts & change your life quality significantly…

Cheers right back at you!

Being new to the group and having some hesitation about coming, I was pleasantly surprised and had a very good time chatting with everyone and getting to know people better in a less formal and structured setting. The food was great too.

It was heroic of Debra to come out when she wasn't feeling well and I hope that she gets better fast.

Afterwards, I went to see What Remains of Us at the Bloor Cinema, a top-secret documentary about Tibet. Security guards search you for cameras and recording devices at the door.  It was a wonderful, humane look into the aftermath of the takeover of Tibet and the systematic genocide of the Tibetan people. A moving reminder of the pathology of corporations and world superpowers.

Have a great week!

Marta

Hi, everyone. My name is KC. I hope you had a good week.

First of all, happy one year anniversary! Congratulations to all of
you for making this group a success. Now the group is even featured in
a Toronto Star article! Thank you to Rama for organizing this group :o)

And I want to tell you know about two excellent documentaries airing
this upcoming weekend :

"The Take" : Argentinian workers' fight to keep their plants open by
running the businesses themselves. Saturday, April 9th at 10PM on CBC
Newsworld (Channel 23)

"The Corporation" : part one - "Pathology of Commerce" - examines the
pathological self-interest of the modern corporation. Sunday, April
10th at 10PM on TVO (Channel 2)

I have seen both programs and they are definitely worth checking out.

See you at the dinner on Sunday,

Hi Apple,

There is no best treatment. Each individual human
being is different from other beings, conditioned by
his/her genes and background upbringing. A treatment
that works for one might not work as well for somebody
else. We can only find and emphasise generalities.

These days the treatments for Social Anxiety include
the arsenal of medical and behavioral. The best among
behavioral is CBT, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, where
by changing your wrong cognitions and by trying to do
and face what you fear, you change your personality
and get rid of anxiety. Medication helps in the path
to recovery because it reduces the anxiety and other
negative feelings and frees you to focus on CBT.

If you are interested and live in Toronto, you can
take your first step towards a positive change by
taking part in our meetings. There is advice and there
is support. You also have to seek help from
specialists in the field.

Cheers,

Rama

The guy I originally got the cd from has been phobia free for 1 year with no more reactions. I found a website (this guy doesn't market at all and it took me an hour to find his site)    freedomfromphobias.com  It's the same cd I tried.

Sounds like the Emotional Freedom Technique or EFT.  You can read about it here: http://www.artemistherapy.com/wst_page4.php.  I've heard it can cure phobias in one session by breaking the energy patterns of the phobia.  I'm a little skeptical that phobias can be overcome by breaking up its associated energy patterns since the source of the phobia lies in our thoughts and beliefs which create the energy patterns although I could see it providing temporary relief until we recreate the same energy pattern with our mind.  I still may give it a shot sometime.  Let me know how it's long-term effects are if anyone tries it.

What's this CD about?  Is it hypnosis, or is it cognitive therapy?

Fortunately there are no power outages scheduled for Dec. 5.  Dec. 4 has always been a bit iffy, but we needn't worry about that now.
cheers!

Hi, Terry:

I'm very much willing to attend the event. Since subscribed to the group just a few days ago, I have no idea about how the group is organize, how the people is like, Is there any fee involved? is there something I am expected to prepare before attending the group? I clicked several links trying to find out these info but with no luck. I am a new immigrant born and raised in China, now working in Mississauga at a small company, might have some reasonable phobia character. If it is ok for the gro up and there will not have another power outage at that day, you could count me in.

Regards,
Michael

Hi Rama,

I just got the reminder for this Sunday's group meeting and it says 11am - 12pm but I thought it was at 4pm.  Is that the correct time?

Thanks,
Brian.

Hi,

I just want to welcome our 3 new members who took part in today's
meeting. Attending the first meeting is always the most difficult and
it is a big step to take. You will see that the next meetings will be
easier and easier in our friendly group and you will appreciate the
role that it plays as an exposure in a positive setting.

See you all,

Rama

Hey, Rama. This is KC. I hope you have been well and
that the meetings are going well at the new location.

Yes, I have been receiving your emails. The most
recent one was a link to article. But when I tried the
link, it didn't work. This should be the article you
are referring to :

Hi Rama,

Was there enough response from the group to have this lecture?

Hello,

The moderator of the Social_Phobia_Support group has changed the group's name.
This means that both the group's email address and the group home page
location have changed.

The group email address:
Toronto_Social_Phobia_Support@yahoogroups.com

The group home page location:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Toronto_Social_Phobia_Support

If you have links which point to this group or an address book entry
for the group, you should update them, as the old addresses will no
longer work.
