A love affair with knowledge will never end in heartbreak.
-Michael Garrett Marino
We welcomed two bright newcomers to the group on Sunday where we discussed the Grinch's holiday homework assignment: Can you think of any positive aspects of social anxiety?
We learned from each contributor that social anxiety:
- Serves as a natural reaction in the body (fight or flight/freeze)
- Serves to protect us from danger (safety)
- Helps us to motivate, prepare, and focus our attention.
- Works as an early warning system to alert us to people who may be dangerous or important to us.
- Increases our self-awareness and perceptions causing us to question why we feel the way we do.
- Heightens sensitivity to environment, mental alertness and our ability to survive and thrive.
This discussion may continue at our next meeting if members feel they would like to make additional comments about the positive, adaptive or functional aspects of social anxiety.
Deep peace to all,
Marta Owen
