I'm not sure what Hashimoto's has to do with coffee, but I started drinking
coffee at 18 (enticed by the smell only) and I wish I had not. I have
fibrocystic breast. I'm not sure if it's caused by the coffee, but it's not
good for this condition. Whenever I drink coffee or certain foods I feel
tenderness and lumps in my breast. I definitely feel the difference in my
breast whenever I stop drinking coffee. I'm still trying to kick the caffeine
habit. I induldge no more than 5 times a month. I don't think that it would be
good for a developing girl. The dr.'s and research only makes references to
eliminating coffee, but I beleive there is a direct effect because of the way I
feel after drinking it. Some people may be more sensitive than others, but the
problem is that the condition doesn't develop until late 20's or 30's.

Karla;

Yes, actually that IS helpful. It gave me a whole new research
angle.

According to the Estrin-D website, the active ingredient
is 'xanthine', or caffiene-type chemical compounds. So, that's in
line with your article.

However, I found varying reports of the caffiene equivalent -- one
site said that it was similar to a really strong cup of espresso.
Still, the recommended dosage of estrin-d is two tablets before
every meal. Yikes. Two cups of espresso before every meal and I'd
be bouncing off the ceiling by noon.

Anyway, I decided to lookup these 'xanthines' and I found a really
good article here:
http://www.drugfreesport.com/choices/drugs/street/caffeine.html
Among other things, I was surprised to learn that theophylline (used
to treat asthma and bronchitis) was closely related to caffeine.

However, in moderate doses (1-3 cups of coffee), the effects of
caffeine sound really good: increasing central nervous system
activity, and releasing more fat for energy.

Incidently, I have started visiting my local barista before going to
the gym. I get a regular 12 oz coffee and add a little skim milk to
it (none of that hi-fat cappuchino stuff). I have definitely
noticed that my workouts are much more comfortable, which helps me
last longer.

Price comparison:
1 12 oz cup coffee (375 mg caffeine) - $1.75
1 no-doz (200 mg caffeine) - .13
1 estrin-d tablet (unknown mg) - .33

food for thought.

:-)

Here is what today's newsletter from Good Housekeeping had to say about
Estrin-D. The article was entitled "Will a Pill help you shed pounds".

Estrin-D
What it contains: Yerba maté, guarana and damiana herbs
What it claims: A diet pill for menopausal women, Estrin-D says it balances
hormones, increases metabolism and reduces caloric intake.
Reality check: What's at work here is good old caffeine. Estrin-D's recommended
daily dosage is equivalent to 11 cups of coffee, according to tests conducted
for the Good Housekeeping Institute. You'll be buzzing, all right, but you won't
necessarily lose weight.

Hope this is helpful.

Happy holidays to all.

I was so incredibly touched by the news stories of the tsunami that took
place this holiday weekend that I wanted to find a way to help-and getting the
word out seemed like a good place to start.

To watch the torment of parents as they grieve the loss of thier children
really made me realize how lucky I am. I just wanted to share with anyone else
who may be interested in helping, how easy it is to make a donation to the Red
Cross to help in the relief effort. You simply go to redcross.org, select
International Relief Fund, and you can make a credit card donation for as
little as $5.00. I know we're all strapped for cash after the holiday$, but
even a
few dollars could buy a case of much needed water or a meal for a family
struggling to survive.

Thanks so much for whatever you can do.

Terry,

I've been so busy lately that I haven't had a chance to check my emails. 1100
were waiting for me. I actually felt much better right after surgery than I
feel now. I was not able to take the medicine for the first 2 weeks because
they wanted to send samples to the lab [everything checked out fine - thank
God!!]. The puffiness from my face immediately went away. I began to lose
weight rapidly [i've got much to lose] and I had more energy. i am on synthroid
.175 and I have gained the weight back and I am somewhat sluggish. my scar
healed beautifully. however my voice is not completely back. it's more
noticeable towards the end of the day i'm usually hoarse and anytime during the
day i'm unable to sing at high pitches [sound like marge from the simpsons]. my
dr. was surpised that i was still hoarse so he's giving me 6 weeks to examine me
again.

Terry Potkay <potkay@...> wrote:
Hi Parker!
I'm so glad to hear your surgery went well and I'm glad I made you feel more
comfortable. So have you found out the results yet? How does your neck feel?
The scar will be a little red for a while but once it fades nobody will even
notice it. Nobody notices mine unless I point it out...and I didn't even put
any lotion or anything on it. It's funny that you mentioned your nurse had the
surgery done too. When I went for my surgery...the same thing happened to me.
My surgeon's nurse showed me her scar and said my doctor had done her surgery
too...

How's your voice? I know some people have hoarse voices after surgery but mine
wasn't really effected. My doctor came in my room the morning after my surgery
and was laughing at me because I was up and talking on the phone to my
grandmother!

So did your doctor put you on thyroid meds? Do you know what to expect with
that? If you have any questions...let me know and I'll try to give you as much
information as I can remember!

Hope your feeling well and I'll talk to you soon. Keep Smiling!

Terry,

I survived. I'm home and just a little sore. Again, you were my #1 angel on
the morning of my surgery. I was really confused and having second doubts. My
second angel was my nurse. She was no more than 25 years old and had the
surgery done by the doctor who was performing it on me. So, it was a relief to
actually communicate with you both during a difficult time.

thanks again,

Hi Parker,
I had a total thyroidectomy in March 2002 because of papilary thyroid cancer. I
was 37 at the time. The surgery went fine...I didn't really even have that much
pain. Because you can't eat or drink anything before surgery, I think my
caffeine withdrawal headache was worse than the pain from the surgery...I just
wanted a cup of coffee after the surgery to make the headache go away! =)
I stayed in the hospital one night. They just like to measure your calcium
levels because your parathyroids have a chance of being bruised or damaged
during surgery. This could cause you to have low calcium levels. When I was
discharged, I had to take calcium pills for a while and eat a lot of Tums! Yuk!
They gave me vicodin (spelling?) for pain but when I took it I got nauseaus so I
just stuck with Tylenol. Your neck muscles feel sore for a while...especially
when you try to look up...it feels like your going to stretch your incision open
but the doctor said it was fine. After my surgery I wasn't put on Thyroid
medicine because I was going for an RAI treatment in 6 weeks and there were
symptoms associated with that...but that's another story...
Are you currently taking Thyroid meds? If not...if you have a total
thyroidectomy and then you have to go on meds...it will take at least 6 weeks
for the meds to get into your system (assuming they prescribed the correct
dose). If you want more info about the symptoms or how you'll feel while
waiting for your meds to kick in...let us know and we'll be able to walk you
through that as well. Personally I think the surgery was a lot easier than
dealing with the symptoms of the low thyroid!
Good Luck and we'll be thinking of you. Let us know how everything went when
you're feeling better.

Hi all,

It's been a while since I have read my emails. I had a total thyroidectomy on
Oct. 18th. I would totally get a second opinion. After 6 years of my doctors
feeling my swollen neck and ordering blood test they NEVER came back with
abnormal blood test results. It was not until I demanded more tests after my 6
week OB checkup, because I could clearly see that my neck was twice the size. I
had the ultrasound and it showed that I had multinodulars and a goiter. My
blood tests were normal, but I had been experiencing symptoms for both hypo and
hyper over six years [i have had 3 kids during this time so i attributed it to
pregnancy].

I was nervous about the surgery [thank God I found this group to ease my
worries] because it was the easy part. My surgeon said that the thyroid was so
large that it started to wrap around my trachea. The ultrasound did not reveal
any of this. So, I'm just saying that the blood work and the test do not show
everything. I can't beleive that you had yours removed and you are not on
medicine. My doctor was an excellent surgeon. I had tons of quesitons when I
went back for my post op visit. One of the questions was if you could develop
hypo or hyper symptoms after your thyroid had been removed. He said yes you can
if your medicine is not the proper dosage. I am presently on synthroid .175 and
I beleive that if I stopped taking it for the next 3 mos. my blood test would
again show no abnormality!

Congratulations on your new house, married bliss and big 3-0! Wow, that's
quite a lot to cope with, huh?
I remember some members of another thyroid group griping about doctors who
look at blood test results and do not listen to them. They said that as long
as the tests come back normal, the doctors wouldn't care if they feel
horrible. Maybe it would be wise to get a second opinion. Even if another
test shows that it's probably stress, it would still be worth knowing,
right?

Methimazole comes with a warning that it can be potentially toxic. I took
20mg of Methimazole for two years, then switched to thiamazole (which my
endo said is the same thing, it just comes in a higher dosage - methimazole
comes in 5mg per tab, while thiamazole is 10mg per tab, which means I had to
take only two tabs a day instead of four). If the medication is causing
discomfort, maybe you can switch to another medication. My endo mentioned
that PTU is milder than methimazole.
I would recommend sticking with the meds. I was also advised to take RAI
because it was taking too long for my hormone levels to normalize (three
years of meds, with quarterly blood tests). But I did my research, and found
that RAI can do more harm than good, as it can lead to hypothyroidism. Some
in this group who've gone on the hyper-hypo roller coaster said they'd
rather be hyper than hypo.
Explore all your options first before resorting to RAI. After reading about
it, I wouldn't recommend it (do a Google search on hyper and RAI to find out
more).
It does take a while to "get well" (or as well as we can hope to be). At one
point I thought I would never get better, that i'd be on meds for the
foreseeable future, and yet here I am, euthyroid for three years, without
meds for two. It can happen.

Hey people! I am pretty new to the group and I don't mean to be annoying, but
I wanted to let all of you know I finally got my webcam back. It took a while
to repair, but everything is running great now, and the picture is crystal
clear. The repair guy also told me that he added some new software to allow
me to talk live to those watching me! So if any of you guys want to chat
come try it out on my new homepage :)

Hi Raelee!
I'm from Melbourne too! Can you tell me more about this seminar?
Who's your endo? I'm looking for one, haven't seen an endo recently.

Hi Bubiboo,
I tried to check your profile, but it was blocked. Anyway, what's your
story?

Hi Everyone,
I am new to the group too. Although I have been a member for a couple of
yeas I have had my computer in storage and have just got it back. My name is
Raelee York. I am 33 and was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid 10 years
ago and I have been learning about it ever since. It is amazing just how
much this little gland, that not too many people seem to know about controls
your body. But I have found that when you mention 'Thyroid problem" there is
usually someone within hearing distance who comments "Me Too!" So it is a
lot more common than people may think.
I live in Melbourne and this Sunday 07/11/04 I will be attending the Thyroid
Australia Seminar at the Monash University at Clayton. Anyone else going?
I am looking forward to participating in this group and getting to know you
all.

Raelee

Ok, looking forward to chat with you all. ;)
