Appointment with endocrinologist is the 17th   Message List

My appointment with the endocrinologist is the 17th.

There I will learn what the next step is that she recommends regarding my
thyroid nodules.
On february 2, 2008, I broke my ankle. In the course of their x-raying my ankle,
and neck/spine (to make sure it was okay: it was),
they found 4 thyroid nodules: one was dominant. The 3 others are just cystic,
but the dominant one had cystic and solid components.
I had thyroid bloodwork which was normal. I had an RAIU scan which showed that
at least the dominant nodule (not sure about the others)
was non-functioning (i.e. "cold"). I had a needle biopsy which showed benign
cells: but where there were 'scant cells" in the sample: which means
it appears to be benign, but not quite sure they got a big enough sample to be
totally sure.
I am hoping that the endocrinologist will recommend: redoing the needle biopsy:
I am hoping she will NOT recommend: that I get my thyroid out:
I kind of think that because the biopsy was indicative of a benign nodule: that
removing my thyroid will not be the next step.
One good thing is that: it's almost a year, and the nodules are the same size:
which means that whatever it is it isn't growing rapidly which rules
out a bad form of thyroid cancer.

I'll let you know how things go.
I get my vacation time back January 1st (I lost it all when I took 3 weeks from
work when I had my broken ankle: trips for the above tests had to be taken
by working on a weekend or staying late to make up): so there will be more
flexibility/freedom to take medical tests without having to make up the time,
which will make me feel more relaxed.

right now I am relieved that the biopsy indicates it is probably benign: but
would like to find out for sure: but not at the cost of having to take
Synthroid:
so hopefully she will have ideas about that.

Laurie
