Terry,
I've been so busy lately that I haven't had a chance to check my emails. 1100
were waiting for me. I actually felt much better right after surgery than I
feel now. I was not able to take the medicine for the first 2 weeks because
they wanted to send samples to the lab [everything checked out fine - thank
God!!]. The puffiness from my face immediately went away. I began to lose
weight rapidly [i've got much to lose] and I had more energy. i am on synthroid
.175 and I have gained the weight back and I am somewhat sluggish. my scar
healed beautifully. however my voice is not completely back. it's more
noticeable towards the end of the day i'm usually hoarse and anytime during the
day i'm unable to sing at high pitches [sound like marge from the simpsons]. my
dr. was surpised that i was still hoarse so he's giving me 6 weeks to examine me
again.

Hi Parker!
I'm so glad to hear your surgery went well and I'm glad I made you feel more
comfortable. So have you found out the results yet? How does your neck feel?
The scar will be a little red for a while but once it fades nobody will even
notice it. Nobody notices mine unless I point it out...and I didn't even put
any lotion or anything on it. It's funny that you mentioned your nurse had the
surgery done too. When I went for my surgery...the same thing happened to me.
My surgeon's nurse showed me her scar and said my doctor had done her surgery
too...
How's your voice? I know some people have hoarse voices after surgery but mine
wasn't really effected. My doctor came in my room the morning after my surgery
and was laughing at me because I was up and talking on the phone to my
grandmother!
So did your doctor put you on thyroid meds? Do you know what to expect with
that? If you have any questions...let me know and I'll try to give you as much
information as I can remember!
Hope your feeling well and I'll talk to you soon. Keep Smiling!

Terry,
I survived. I'm home and just a little sore. Again, you were my #1 angel on
the morning of my surgery. I was really confused and having second doubts. My
second angel was my nurse. She was no more than 25 years old and had the
surgery done by the doctor who was performing it on me. So, it was a relief to
actually communicate with you both during a difficult time.
thanks again,
Parker

Hi Parker,
I had a total thyroidectomy in March 2002 because of papilary thyroid cancer. I
was 37 at the time. The surgery went fine...I didn't really even have that much
pain. Because you can't eat or drink anything before surgery, I think my
caffeine withdrawal headache was worse than the pain from the surgery...I just
wanted a cup of coffee after the surgery to make the headache go away! =)
I stayed in the hospital one night. They just like to measure your calcium
levels because your parathyroids have a chance of being bruised or damaged
during surgery. This could cause you to have low calcium levels. When I was
discharged, I had to take calcium pills for a while and eat a lot of Tums! Yuk!
They gave me vicodin (spelling?) for pain but when I took it I got nauseaus so I
just stuck with Tylenol. Your neck muscles feel sore for a while...especially
when you try to look up...it feels like your going to stretch your incision open
but the doctor said it was fine. After my surgery I wasn't put on Thyroid
medicine because I was going for an RAI treatment in 6 weeks and there were
symptoms associated with that...but that's another story...
Are you currently taking Thyroid meds? If not...if you have a total
thyroidectomy and then you have to go on meds...it will take at least 6 weeks
for the meds to get into your system (assuming they prescribed the correct
dose). If you want more info about the symptoms or how you'll feel while
waiting for your meds to kick in...let us know and we'll be able to walk you
through that as well. Personally I think the surgery was a lot easier than
dealing with the symptoms of the low thyroid!
Good Luck and we'll be thinking of you. Let us know how everything went when
you're feeling better.

HI all,
I am new to the group. I am a 37 yr. old female facing a
thyrodectomy in a couple of days. Is there anybody out there who has
had a total or near total thyrodectomy done. Please give me as much
info as possible. I have multiple nodulars on my thyroid so there's
no getting around surgery, but I need to hear if a total or near
total is the best? in additon to whatever info you would like to
share. thanks
parker
