The Long Hair Loom - July 21, 2004
Greetings!
It has been a H-O-T summer so far this year, and I hope you've taken care of your hair under these intense temperatures! A few quick and easy tips to remember is:
1- Cover up! If you are going to be out in the sun for extended amounts of time, cover that head of yours. You can use a scarf, hat, cap, or pull out the umbrella! Create your own shade!
2- Just can't make yourself cover up? Well, there are styling products out there with SPF in them to help protect hair from the sun's damaging rays. Spritz some in or slather some on before heading out!
3- If you are going to be swimming, wet your hair first, then apply your favorite conditioner. If you want some extra protection, try topping that off with just a bit of oil or Shea Butter. Shea Butter has a small amount of natural SPF protection, and Monoi Oil, also has versions with SPF in them! After swimming, be sure to immediately rinse out your hair to free it of chlorine or salt water. Wash and condition as usually.
4- If your ends are drying out, try wetting your length before wrapping your hair up into a bun or twist. The wrapping type of updo, helps to lock in that moisture, keeping your hair hydrated longer!
5- Drink more water! Most of us need more water than we take in. Soda, tea, and other sweetened or caffienated drinks don't count! Be sure to drink your 8- 8oz glasses of water each day! And while you're at it, if you use a SPF lotion on your skin every day, you might want to supplement your diet with some extra Vitamin D. You need the sun in order to help produce Vitamin D in your body, so if you're blocking those sun's ray, chances are you can become deficient in Vitamin D, as some studies are now showing. You need Vitamin D in order to help your body absorb Calcium!
