  What Are Your Priorities?

Here we are at the close of another year. Not just any year, the
year our country was attacked, lives were lost and personal freedoms
were taken away.

As we assess our life, we ask ourselves questions, such as; "What is
important?", "What are my priorities?" and "Where do I want to be a
year from now?"

One of our first priorities is health. To fully enjoy life we need
to be healthy; spiritually, physically, mentally and emotionally.
When we are full of health and energy, we can be better in all areas
of our life.

Our body is made up of 9 important systems; Digestive, Intestinal,
Circulatory, Nervous, Immune, Respiratory, Urinary, Glandular and
Structural.

Nature's Sunshine provides us with a personal "Lifestyle Analysis"
to help us determine the priorities of our body. By using
the "Lifestyle Analysis", it can help us come to a clearer
understanding of our body's priorities. It also helps us simplify
our health program by focusing on 1 or 2 systems at a time.

Nature's Sunshine's quality vitamins, minerals, herbal formulas and
homeopathics can help support each of the body's systems. In
the "Lifestyle Analysis" three to four supplements are suggested for
support of each system.

For all your Nature's Sunshine products and more information on the "
Lifestyle Analysis" contact: Abundant Life Herb Shop and Natural

Life is busy! Now is the time, to take the time, to give your body
what it needs to be healthy, "one minute @ a time".

                    Healthy Holidays

With the holiday schedule, we are busy with the last minute
preparations. We tend to forget what our body needs to stay healthy,
during this time of year.
Here are some health tips to help you feel and look your best
everyday.

* Drink pure water, avoid coffee, sodas and alcohol.
* Plan regular meals, eating more protein and less carbohydrates.
* Choose fresh fruits and veggies over sweets, chocolate and
pastries.
* Stay physically active, enjoying the outdoors.
* Simplify your schedule to avoid being "stressed-out".
* Allow sufficient time for sleep and rest.
* Regularly take your herbs, vitamins and minerals.

Nature's Sunshine provides us with quality products to give our body
the extra nutrients it needs. Super Supplemental is a multiple
vitamin, mineral and herbal formula in an easy-to-swallow tablet.
Calcium Plus Vitamin D, Liquid Calcium or Coral Calcium help to
nourish the skeletal and nervous systems.

Balanced B Complex tablets and B Complex capsules can support the
digestive and nervous systems. Don't forget Nutri-Calm for a calm
and stress-free holiday!

Chromium GTF "glucose tolerance factor" works with insulin to
transport glucose from the blood to the body cells, helping regulate
blood sugar levels.

Nature's Sunshine's Energ-V is a herbal blend that promotes energy
by providing thyroid and adrenal support.

One Healthy Minute®

                       Stress-Free Holidays

What a wonderful time of year! This month is filled with
preparation and anticipation! There are Christmas parties and plays,
shopping, gift wrapping, decorating, baking and guests.

The extra activities along with our regular work schedule can
deprive our body of the rest it needs. Time and money pressures
create stress.

Stress uses nutrients that are needed to nourish the nervous system.
These nutrients include; vitamin C, B vitamins, calcium and
magnesium. A combination of stress and a lack of sleep can cause us
to feel tired, irritable, nervous, anxious, depressed or even panic.

Nature's Sunshine's Nutri-Calm can help supply the nutrients needed
for the nervous system. Nutri-Calm contains vitamin C, the B
vitamins, including; B1, B2, B6, B12 and folic acid. An important
thing to remember is that vitamin C and B vitamins are water soluble
and need to be replaced on a daily basis. Nutri-Calm contains the
anti-stress herbs; valerian root, passion flower and hops flowers.

Valerian Root is a natural tranquilizer that contains a natural
source of calcium and other minerals. Passion Flower has a calming
sedative effect on the nervous system and relieves muscle tension.
Hops Flowers are known for their relaxing benefits and are rich in
vitamin B-complex.

Nature's Sunshine's Herbal Sleep is a combination of valerian root,
passion flower and hops flowers. Now you can enjoy the benefits of
Herbal Sleep without the harmful side effects.

One Healthy Minute®
                     Enzymes To The Rescue

The holidays are here! We begin thinking about holiday meals and
desserts.
With all the delicious foods to choose from, we tend to overeat.
This can result in feeling uncomfortable, experiencing gas,
heartburn and indigestion.

Before you grab for the anti-acids you should know enzymes can
help! Enzymes are the "pac men" that help break down foods for
assimilation into the bloodstream. Just as chewing our food is
essential for digestion, enzymes are necessary to deal with the
hundreds of differing food compounds we eat.

Nature's Sunshine's Food Enzymes contain 8 different enzymes which
help digest proteins, fats and carbohydrates. Food Enzymes contain
hydrochloride acid which is used for digestion of proteins including
meat and beans.

Nature's Sunshine's Proactazyme is especially designed for those
suffering from hiatal hernia or acid reflux, as it contains no
hydrochloride acid.

Proactazyme is an all-vegetable source and contains protease for the
digestion of proteins.

Nature's Sunshine's Stomach Comfort provides a combination of
natural ingredients that help to neutralize acid, soothe the
stomach, reduce acid reflux and is a chewable calcium.

Nature's Sunshine's Papaya Mints contain papaya fruit, peppermint
leaf and peppermint oil that work great to relieve heartburn. We
like to use these between meals to enhance digestion and as a breath
freshener.

Positive benefits of adding enzymes to your diet include; activating
existing stomach enzymes for better absorption of nutrients, feeling
more energy and being more satisfied from the foods you eat, thus
experiencing less cravings.
Many enjoy loosing unwanted inches when adding enzymes to their
diet.
Enzymes are essential for life!

Hi! I'm AuntyB, and I've been a diabetic for about 12 years now. So
far I'm only on pills, but my diabetes has been really bad for
several months now, and it looks like I might be on shots within a
couple of weeks. My Doc is messing around with my pills to see if a
higher dosage would help me, but if it doesn't, he's putting me on
the shots within the next two weeks. What I'd like to know is, are
there any herbs that would help with my blood sugars? Any kind of
plant leaves I can make into a tea to drink? I do grow a lot of herbs
and different plants, so I'm willing to experiment. I really dread
the thought of having to give myself shots, so any ideas would be
extremely appreciated! Thanks a lot! AuntyB

HERB OF THE WEEK

Hydrangea (Hydrangea arborescents)

Parts used: Leaves and Root

Hydrangea increases the flow of urine and will remove bladder stones and the pain caused by them. Hydrangea will also relieve backache caused by kidney trouble.

The curative principles attributed historically to Hydrangea are remarkable in content.  Its effectiveness is due to its alkaloids that behave like cortisone without the deleterious side effects.  As a blood cleaner, it may be as effective as Chaparral.

Hydrangea's ability to maintain blood, makes is useful to treat lymphatic conditions caused by poor blood.  It is helpful in preventing the formation of gravel and will help deposits to pass through the ureters from the kidneys to the bladder.

Hydrangea works wonderfully for those with serve rheumatism. It also helps correct bedwetting in children. As a diuretic herb, it is particularly helpful for prostate infection and inflammation and for kidney fluid retention.  It is also effective for arthritis swelling and bladder infections.

Fluoride: A Caustic Issue
by Tony Cobb

This article originally appeared in Sunshine Horizons, March 2001, pages 4-5.

The Story of Fluoridation

In the early part of the 20th century, it was common for residents of certain small towns, especially mining towns like Colorado Springs, to develop obtrusive brown stains on their teeth during adolescence. These stains were permanent, and they piqued a great deal of curiosity.

After three decades of research, health practitioners discovered high levels of fluoride in the local water supplies of these towns, and they correlated the presence of fluoride with "mottled" teeth. This was a profound discovery that has proven invaluable to millions ever since.

"I am appalled at the prospect of using water as a vehicle for drugs. Fluoride is a corrosive poison that will produce serious effects on a long-range basis. Any attempt to use water this way is deplorable."

-- Dr. Charles Gordon Heyd,
Past President,
American Medical Association

Along with the detection of fluoride, however, came a second discovery: scientists found that teeth which formed this dental fluorosis (the scientific term for mottled teeth) were extremely strong and virtually impervious to decay. Moreover, they found that when people took in less than 1.0 part per million (ppm) of fluoride in drinking water, their teeth did not develop fluorosis.

They hypothesized that, because mottled tooth enamel was unusually resistant to decay, adding fluoride to drinking water at physically and cosmetically safe levels might help prevent tooth decay.

In 1945, Grand Rapids, Mich., became the first city in the world to fluoridate its drinking water. During a 15-year project, the rate of tooth decay among some 30,000 Grand Rapids schoolchildren was monitored. Studies showed that, after just 11 years, the tooth decay among children born after the inception of fluoridation dropped by more than 60 percent.

It is a true and glorious fact that tooth decay has declined since World War II. However another important fact coincides herewith: in Western Europe--98 percent of which is free of fluoridation--rates of tooth decay have also decreased. It is possible and even likely these trends have arisen from an increase in people’s consciousness of the need for more careful dental hygiene. A 1986 survey carried out by the National Institute of Dental Research (NIDR) of nearly 40,000 children found that those living in fluoridated areas of the United States had the same rate of tooth decay as those living in unfluoridated areas. Upon first request, the NIDR refused to release the data from the survey, and it only did so when forced by the U.S. Freedom of Information Act.

Facts About Fluoride

Fluoride, a corrosive chemical more poisonous than lead, is added to more than 60 percent of U.S. water supplies annually. This number is said to be on the increase, as community residents--like NSP's own neighboring Salt Lake county--vote to have their water fluoridated.

"Fluoridation ... it is the greatest fraud that has ever been perpetrated and it has been perpetrated on more people than any other fraud has."

-- Professor Albert Schatz, Ph.D.
 Nobel Prize Winner [Microbiology]

Sodium fluoride was the kind of fluoride originally added to public water supplies, but this is no longer the case. While it is difficult to fathom why people would willingly add a substance once sold as rat poison to their drinking water, sodium fluoride still might be preferable to the kinds of fluoride dumped into public water supplies today--because sodium fluoride is the only form of fluoride that has undergone thorough testing, out-dated though the data may be. Most fluoridated water supplies in the U.S. are treated with more caustic kinds of fluoride, such as fluosilicic acid and sodium silicofluoride. These compounds are waste products supplied by major corporations of the phosphate fertilizer industry. Anti-fluoride groups believe these corporations save millions of dollars, because it would cost them many times more to dispose of such hazardous materials properly than it does to unleash them on the public.

How Much Fluoride Is Too Much?

"Your well-intentioned dentist is simply following 50 years of misinformation from public health and the dental association. Me, too. Unfortunately, we were wrong."

-- Dr. Hardy Limebeck
Professor of Dentistry
University of Toronto

As stated above, early researchers found that the presence of 1.0 ppm presented no danger of dental fluorosis. They also discovered any dosage over 2.0 ppm was unsafe and likely to give rise to the mottled-teeth condition. Were it possible to keep fluoride levels at the 1.0 ppm level, people would at least be able to avoid the fluorosis problem. However, studies show that the average fluoridated water supply in the U.S. already exceeds this level by double.

This danger is further complicated by the fact that many common foods (such as popular soft drinks) already contain fluoride. Thus, people living in fluoridated areas who choose to consume such foods will most likely take in far more fluoride than the amount deemed safe by scientific estimates. When common breakfast cereals can contain as much as 10.0 ppm, it is easy to see how quickly the average person can "overdose" on fluoride.

In a society literally plagued with incurable diseases whose causes are virtually unknown to medical "experts," is it so incredible that some people are concerned about the intake of even the smallest amount of corrosive poison?

The Ancient Water Cure

Drink more water. Hippocrates' 2000-year-old advice to thwart kidney stones is still tops among physicians, no matter what the cause or type of stone.  One study found that men who drank the most fluids cut their chances of kidney stones 29 percent.  Drinking lots of water blunts the potential damage from calcium, oxalate, and every other stone-forming mineral in the urine.  The reason: water dilutes concentrations of minerals that can crystallize into stones. Studies show that people who excrete less that one liter of urine a day are much more apt to have kidney stones than those who put out twice as much.

Unfortunately, most people think they drink more fluids than they actually do.  The bare minimum should be eight glasses spread throughout the day. A good rule of thumb is to drink half your body weight in ounces of pure water each day. For example, if you weight 150 pounds, you should drink a minimum of 75 ounces of water every day.

Milk Thistle Time-Release (60)

Milk Thistle Time-Release [Immune] provides a consistent supply of silymarin (a constituent of Milk thistle) to the liver, giving it nourishment and protection against ingested toxins. The liver performs 500-plus functions, including filtering and destroying toxins in the body. Providing it with proper nutrients allows this essential organ to function at top capacity. Silymarin has shown remarkable ability to help liver cells regenerate and stabilize liver cell membranes. Research shows that it actually changes the structure of the outer liver cell membrane, preventing toxins and poisons from entering the interior of the cell. It also stimulates protein synthesis in liver cells, which generates DNA and RNA. This helps regenerate damaged liver cells. Silymarin does not stimulate growth of malignant liver tissue. As an antioxidant, silymarin is at least 10 times more powerful than vitamin E.

One tablet of NSP Time-Release Milk Thistle contains 350 mg milk thistle herb extract, providing 80 percent (280 mg) silymarin.

Take one tablet with a meal twice daily.

In the past we have had good luck feeding our dog garlic capsules, so
the garlic gets into his bloodstream. Mosquitos, fleas, ticks, and
other blood-sucking insects don't like the taste of garlic. Put
liquid chlorophyll in Fido's drinking water to offset the garlic
breath. NSP's SynerPro High-Potency Garlic contains chlorophyll which
also helps control the order.

You can also put 10 drops of NSP's Tea Tree 100% Natural Essential
Oil into 2 cups of water and dip a bandanna into the mixture. Ring it
out and tie around the dog's neck. As an alternative to Tea Tree Oil,
you can also use NSP's Rosemary or Eculaypus Essential Oils (We know
the quality of NSP's oils, but we can't vouch for Brand X.)

Anyone else have an idea?

I have heard that if you feed you dog garlic, you will not have a problem with fleas.  Does the odorless garlic work the same as the jel caps? I tried this last year on my two dogs.  The large dog (about 125 lbs) did fine, but the smaller dog (about 40 lbs) had garlic breath really bad.  I would much rather use something natural on my dogs, than use the flea stuff you get from the vet.  I feel like I am poisoning my dogs.  When I stopped giving them garlic last year, I started spraying them with diluted Pennyroyal every couple of days.  That seemed to work pretty well but not great.  Any suggestions?

HERB OF THE WEEK

Garlic (Allium sativum)

Parts Used: The whole plant

Garlic is first noted by Chinese literature in the Collection of Commentaries on the Classic of the Materia Medica (500 A.D). According to a 3,500 year old Egyptian scroll, healers even then believed garlic could help a person fight cancer. Dioscorides, who lived in the first century A.D., was a surgeon and physician in the Roman armies. He described Garlic with regard to the Doctrine of Signatures. This is the notion that the medicinal properties of the plant are revealed symbolically by its outward form. Thus, a plant such as garlic, with a long hollow stalk, would be good for all diseases of the windpipe.

When the plagues ravaged Europe, the populace ate garlic daily as a protection against disease. Garlic is known as a natural antibiotic, without the deleterious effects of the drugs that kill all life within the body. It was reported that garlic may have worked as a preventive simply by keeping others at a safe distance, but it did work, and it saved many lives. When it was discovered that garlic would prevent the plague, there were those who protected themselves by using it. Some of them later took advantage of this protected state and robbed those that were dead or dying. When caught, they were executed for their crimes, which was an ironic turn of events for having missed the angel of death.

As a medicinal plant, Garlic can be used extensively for disease prevention. Internally, it can be used against infection of all kinds. Externally, it can be used for eye, ear, nose, and throat infections, and because of the thiamin content, it is used to prevent mosquito bites. Garlic has measurable amount of germanium (a mineral which strengthens the immune system), an antioxidant for aiding in physical endurance and is of excellent benefit in would healing.

Nutritionally, Garlic has been found useful for some control in glucose tolerance for both hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia, possibly by helping to reduce insulin requirements. It is useful in orchestrating and blocking atherosclerosis and in reducing blood cholesterol. Garlic has also been shown to lower serum cholesterol and triglycerides, while also raising HDL levels in both healthy individuals and patients of coronary heart disease. It helps protect against narrowing of the arteries. Garlic is known to dissolve LDL (harmful) cholesterol and to lower triglycerides, while increasing HDL (beneficial) cholesterol levels.

Garlic owes most of its strong aroma to allicin, which is produced by the enzymatic action of allinase on alliin (a sulphur-containing amino acid). This action does not take place until garlic is bruised, thus the aroma of fresh garlic is not offensive until it is crushed or cut. There are some that have discovered a way to prepare a garlic product devoid of the sulfur smell by removing the allicin, however it is the consensus of opinion that allicin is the ingredient that destroys fungus and possesses other medicinal benefits.

Most of the beneficial effects of garlic are thought to be the result of its sulfur compounds. The plant is easy to grow and its strong odor serves a useful purpose in the garden. It helps to discourage insects that might prey on other plants.

Researchers at Loma Linda University have found compounds in Garlic that activate enzymes in the liver that destroy alfa-toxin, a potent carcinogen produced by mold that can grow on peanuts and grains. Alfa-toxins are claimed to be a leading cause of liver cancer.

It is known for being able to stimulate the lymphatic system to throw off waste materials. It works to relieve pain resultant from insect bites. Garlic rids the respiratory tract of phlegm and works to rid the bowels of parasites.

Because it is a natural antibiotic, it helps to control fevers and works to combat viruses. Garlic helps to control disorders of the blood. It is even good for expelling thread worms from the body. Garlic has been used in enemas and colonics, having the ability to rid the colon of intestinal parasites. Garlic also has the ability to destroy harmful bacteria and at the same time leave behind beneficial bacteria for the body to utilize.

Garlic strengthens blood vessels and is a powerful detoxifier providing protection against pollutants and heavy metal toxicity. Evidence continues to mount that of the 50 compounds in garlic, 10 are active in reversing cancer development. Garlic has been used in cough remedies for centuries.

Externally, Garlic has often been used as a drawing poultice. It has been recommended to apply a layer of olive oil before applying garlic directly on the skin. In India, garlic is used to wash wounds and ulcers. Garlic strengthens the heart, it also nourishes and has a positive effect on the stomach, spleen and lungs. Garlic protects against cancer-causing agents as found in cigarette smoke, charbroiled meat and polluted air. It is a specific anti-tumor agent used as a preventive for many types of cancer and other degenerative diseases.

Garlic improves circulation, while it stimulates the immune system. It contains an anti-coagulant which normalizes blood platelet adhesion by reducing the "stickiness of the blood" thereby improving circulation. Garlic is effective in treating arthritis and may help prevent breast cancer, heart disease, strokes and some viral infections.

The Russians call Garlic a natural antibiotic, and have referred to it as "Russian penicillin."

Paavo Airola, a leading authority on biological medicine, describes garlic as the "King of the Vegetable Kingdom."

Aged garlic is good for use as an antioxidant, anti-tumor agent, immune enhancer, liver protective agent and anti-stress agent. Garlic is good as mosquito repellent, when applied to the body with olive oil. It is also good for avoiding mosquitoes when taken internally with liquid capsules of B1 and B12, one hour before going outside.

Garlic powder is good on open wounds and works to promote the healing process.

Research in the 1970's has shown that oils extracted from Garlic inhibited blood clotting.

Garlic is one of many "super foods" that some consider to be one of the most potent healing herbs in the world.

Allicin is active against fungi which include Candida Albicans. It is even more effective than Nystatin. There are also microbes that are inhibited by Allicin-rich garlic, including the influenza viruses.

The activities of the parasitic fungus that is associated with AIDS is inhibited by the presence of Garlic.

Garlic is effective in treating respiratory conditions such as asthma, bronchial, and lung problems. It is a superior expectorant, helping to expel phlegm from the lungs. Garlic with Capsicum and Vitamin C taken internally at the first notice of a cold can help.

Inserting one capsule of garlic in the rectum can relieve the pain of hemorrhoids by helping to shrink hemmorrhoidal tissue.

Roasted Garlic

Roasting gives garlic a buttery texture and a rich, sweet flavor. It can be used alone as a spread, or as an ingredient in most recipes calling for garlic.

1 or more whole garlic bulbs
Olive oil for brushing

1. Preheat the oven to 400° F (205° C). Line a baking sheet or small pan with aluminum foil.

2. Gently remove the loose, excess papery skin from each garlic bulb. Trim off the top stem and Ľ to ˝ inch of the garlic head (exposing the cloves directly to the heat speeds up the roasting process), but leave the cloves intact. Brush the outer skin and top with about 1 teaspoon olive and place on the prepared pan.

3. Bake the bulb(s) for about 20 to 25 minutes, or until the cloves feel very soft when pierced with the tip of a knife. Remove the garlic from the pan and let cool.

To use, separate the individual garlic cloves, slice the bottom from each and squeeze at the end to release the roasted garlic. Keeps for up to 3 days wrapped in plastic or a tightly covered container in the refrigerator.

HEALTH NOTES

Food Combining

The principles of food combining are based on the fact that your body produces specific enzymes and levels of acidity to digest specific types of food. For example, when you eat a baked potato, it triggers the production of an enzyme that specifically digests complex carbohydrates. When you eat a steak with the potato, the body begins producing a different enzyme that targets the complex proteins contained in steak. Suddenly, the conflicting environment in the stomach is worse and the digestive process slows considerably. When the food just sits there without being fully digested, fermentation occurs (along with gas, bloating, and indigestion).

The rules of food combining can be very complex, but here are some basic guidelines.

The more foods you eat by themselves, the better. Variety is great, just eat one at a time when possible.

When eating protein, eat only non-starch vegetables. There's a reason why you were up half the night after that steak and baked potato the other night. Most sandwiches and the ever-popular hamburger on a bun are very difficult for the body to digest.

Eat fruit by itself. It's best to not even mix different fruit together because of the different acidity levels.

Any type of sugar mixed with any other food creates a serious fermentation problem. Many people will have gas immediately after eating any sugar. Eating dessert with any meal can double or triple digestion time.

Fats, cold or hot foods and drinks, and liquids during meals slow down the digestive process. More fermentation.

Increase consumption or enzyme-rich live foods. Forty to eighty percent of your food should be raw. Eat those veggies! Enzyme supplements also help, but food combining is the most effective approach.

Cranberry and Buchu Concentrate (100)

[Urinary System]. Separate scientific studies have concluded that 1) cranberry juice has substances that alter the bacteria population in urine, and 2) a special factor in the juice seems to make harmful bacteria less likely to cling to the surface of cells in the urinary tract. Along with offering the nutritional advantage of concentrated cranberry juice, NSP is the only company in the world marketing cranberry juice concentrate with Buchu herb concentrate. Buchu, a perennial shrub found in South Africa, is a strong aromatic. Its natural oil has a powerful penetrating aroma akin to peppermint. Buchu is not only good for the digestion but also helps nourish the urinary tract. This unique combination has been carefully processed to reduce the liquid to a concentrated powder before capsulation.

Note: NSP recommends that individuals not take this concentrated formula in conjunction with uva ursi.

Take 1–2 capsules three times daily. Drink 8 oz. pure water with the capsules.

Children take one capsule twice daily.

HERB OF THE WEEK
Ginger (Zingiber officinale)

Part Used: Root.

It was the Spaniards who introduced the Americas to the ginger plant in the early part of the 16th century. Ginger became so popular among Europeans that in 1884, Great Britain imported over 5 million pounds of the root.

Research conducted at Cornell University Medical College has found that Ginger may help prevent strokes and hardening of the arteries. This active ingredient of ginger, Gingerol, is proven effective in preventing recurrences of so-called "little strokes." It is believed that this substance, Gingerol, inhibits an enzyme that causes cells to clot.

Aspirin has currently been lauded medically for its blood thinning properties which help prevent heart problems. What has not been addressed however, is the fact that the Aspirin has serious side effects, such as causing stomach and intestinal ulcers, which often hemorrhage causing death. Also it is said that Aspirin blocks ginger’s action to prevent blood platelets from clumping. So although Aspirin can prevent the clotting that prevents strokes, it also prevents ginger from naturally doing a better job of preventing harmful problems. Ginger thins the blood and lowers blood cholesterol. It is known to work to reduce fevers. It can be used to relieve vomiting and to soothe the stomach and spleen in the process.

Ginger is a warm blood vascular stimulant and body cleansing herb and it used in respiratory and lung/chest clearing combinations. It is system alkalizer and a stimulant of the digestive system. It is a catalyst in nervine and sedative formulas. It has a variety of uses such as in a gargle preparation and as part of sore throat syrups. It is used as a diaphoretic encouraging profuse sweating helping in the removal of toxic waste. It is a kidney stimulant to increase kidney filtration.
Ginger has a reducing effect on migraine headaches without the side effects found with drugs. Ginger has been found effective in combating nausea caused by motion sickness.

Ginger is most often used as a carminative, usually mixed with a variety of other herbs, because of its great ability to stop griping and cramping especially in the abdominal and intestinal area.
Ginger has long been recommended by herbalists as a regulator of blood cholesterol to improve blood circulations, especially to the extremities (hands and feet)

In China, Ginger is used in the first stages of the common cold.
With the stress and strain found in modern women, Ginger is remarkable in alleviating menstrual cramps. It has been found to be effective in arresting excessive menstrual flow and to increase the flow of urine, when taken as a hot infusion.

Ginger is beneficial during pregnancy; it is excellent for morning sickness and has lots of minerals.

More About Ginger

Fresh Ginger is a warming, pungent spice and a cornerstone of Asian cuisine. "Stem" is a more exact description than "root" because the part of this tropical plant that we eat is the underground stem. Ginger keeps many of its healing properties when dried, but fresh ginger is superior for use in cooking.
Choosing and Storing

Store fresh ginger, wrapped, in the refrigerator to prevent it from drying out or becoming moldy. It should keep for a few weeks and also freeze well. To retain the flavor of dried ginger, buy small amounts and store in an airtight container in a dark cool place. Pickled ginger and ginger preserved in syrup are useful standbys.

Killer Sweeteners
by Reuben Yoder
Jo-Ad Herb Shop, Malta OH

This article on artificial sweeteners is featured because of the influx of aspartame poisoning related health problems that we are now seeing all the time. While this article focuses primarily on aspartame (also marketed as Equal, NutraSweet, or Spoonful), there are a number of other artificial sweeteners that could fall in the same category, including saccharin (Sweet 'n Low). Aspartame can be the culprit in so many different cases, that we often don't think about it being involved.
For example, about three weeks ago a friend had a near head-on collision on the way to work. It appeared he had a blackout and swerved in front of a car in the oncoming lane. Fortunately, he survived without serious injury. Upon asking several questions, it was discovered that he continually used a breath freshener every day that contained aspartame as the sweetener. Not only that but he said that when he drank soda pop, he always chooses the Diet drinks. It is possible that these sweeteners are affecting us in ways that we’ve never imagined before?

What is Aspartame?

Aspartame has three components: Two synthetic amino acids, phenylalanine (50%) and aspartic acid (40%), are combined in methanol, also known as wood alcohol (10%). Supporters of aspartame will tell us that the two primary amino acids, which comprise 90% of aspartame by weight, are harmless and a natural part of our diet. This is only partially true.

Phenylalanine and aspartic acid are found in the foods that we eat, but can only be considered natural and harmless when consumed with other amino acids. On their own, they enter the central nervous system in abnormally high concentrations, causing irregular neuron firing and potential cell death. Excitotoxin food additives (such as aspartame) have also been shown to stimulate the generation of free radicals in the body.

The 10 percent that is absorbed into the bloodstream as methanol (wood alcohol) is reason for even more concern. The Environmental Protection Agency defines safe consumption as 7.8 milligrams per day . A one-liter beverage sweetened with aspartame contains about 56 milligrams of methanol, more that 7 times the EPA limit. Proponents of these products say that there is less methanol in aspartame than in a glass of tomato juice. However in aspartame the methanol is free, appearing without ethanol, the antidote for methanol toxicity that is always present in natural foods.

Worse yet are aspartame's metabolites, or breakdown products. Phenylalanine decomposes into diketopiperazine (DKP), a known carcinogen, when exposed to warm temperatures or prolonged storage. Methanol breaks down into formaldehyde and formic acid and it is because of this formaldehyde poisoning that one of the more common side effects of aspartame is vision loss. Formaldehyde is grouped in the same class of drug as cyanide and arsenic--deadly poisons!

One of the reasons many people do not associate aspartame with its symptoms is because the effects are not usually immediately dramatic. In most cases, the effects are cumulative and develop over a prolonged period of time. A few of the most common problems that have been linked to aspartame consumption are headaches, memory loss and mental collision, blackouts, vision loss, and seizures. This is but a short list. The FDA has compiled a list of 92 symptoms associated with aspartame use, ranging from the problems mentioned to coma and death even makes their list!

If you've ever wondered why the widespread acceptance and promotion of artificial sweeteners just take a look at the money trail. The American Diabetes Association has published a statement on their website concerning alternative sweeteners. The ADA declares that "The American Diabetes Association follows FDA recommendations and recognizes that there is no credible scientific evidence linking aspartame to any health-related problems for people with diabetes." They further state: "The American Diabetes Association considers aspartame--as well as the other FDA-approved nonnutritive sweeteners saccharin, acesulfame K, and sucralose--acceptable sugar substitutes and a safe part of a diabetic meal plan."

With further research on their own website, I discovered that Monsanto, manufacturer of aspartame (marketed as Equal, NutriSweet, and Spoonful), is listed in the ADA's list of "Top Corporate Sponsors." Any idea why ADA is recommending the things that they are?

The Alternative

All of these negative side effects have caused many to look for natural alternative sweeteners. One of the most useful in this arena is a product called Stevia. It is the powdered leaf of stevia rebaudiana, a shrub native primarily to Paraguay and Brazil where it has been used for centuries for it’s sweetening abilities. Whole leaf stevia is 15 times sweeter than sugar and pure stevioside is up to 400 times sweeter. It is calorie-free, does not increase blood sugar, and can be used in baking (unlike aspartame products) because its sweetness does not break down when heated.

Nature's Sunshine has recently introduced a Stevia product containing a highly concentrated form of stevia rebaudiana in a based of fructooligosaccharides, a non-nutritive substance derived from chicory root that aids the body in the production of friendly bacteria. This combination is a great advantage over many of the Stevia products on the market because many competitors use maltodextrin as a base for Stevia. Maltodextrin is a sweetener processed from the starch in corn and may affect blood sugar which is a problem for diabetics. This is another example of Nature's Sunshine's commitment to quality; not only is our Stevia product free of refined sweeteners, but the FOS that is used as a base has substantial health benefits.

Pregnant Pause

Doctors in Puerto Rico suggest that some cases of severe morning sickneww may be linked to the same stomach bug that  can cause ulcers, the bacterium H. pilori.  They found that 89 percent of pregnant women with intense naucea tested positive for the bacterium, whereas fewer, than ten percent of those who didn't have morning sickness came up positive.  Researchers are preparing to test this possible link further in an additional study.

Herb Of The Week: Papaya (Carica papaya)
Health Notes: Digestion: A Key Health Factor
FYI (For Your Information): Prayer and Health Study

This Week's Specials

HERB OF THE WEEK

Papaya (Carica papaya)

Part used: Fruit, seeds, and leaves.

On one of his many journeys to the West, Columbus, in observing the eating habits of the natives of the Caribbean, noticed when they are exceptionally heavy meals of fish and meat, and when the meal was followed by Papaya, there was no apparent indigestion. In modern times, we have discovered that the unripe Papaya contains, in its milky juices, a protein-digesting enzyme known as papain, which greatly resembles the animal enzyme pepsin, in its digestive action. Today the papain of the Papaya is used in various preparations for indigestion and in the manufacture of meat tenderizers.

The native Central American Indians use the juice of the plant (from unripened fruit) to remove warts, tumors, and corns. The seeds were used as a parasiticide.

The unusual quality of papain, unlike other enzymes which can only digest protein in an acid or an alkaline medium, is that it acts in all three environments: neutral, alkaline, or acid. The Papaya apparently has other digestive qualities that include the rest of the food groups, which are fats and carbohydrates.

It could be reasoned that all stomach problems stem from the lost ability of the stomach to digest food. As such, the digestive enzymes in Papaya, to include the green Papaya and its leaves, are most beneficial to improve the digestive process.

Papaya is also know to have another important quality in that it helps to prevent ulcers and helps to heal them after they have developed. Papaya has shown the ability to increase the blood’s coagulation properties and at the same time reduce acid secretion, which could account for the beneficial action that it has on stomach ulcers.

In areas where Papayas grow, the natives have treated ulcerations of the skin and open wounds by wrapping fresh Papaya leaves around them. Other medical uses of Papaya have been in the use of the papain in surgery, especially in spinal disk ruptures. Instead of surgically removing the problem, they have injected the papain directly into the area to be removed, which digests the decaying injured substance, thus relieving the problem. By this use and other surgical uses, papain has come to be known as "nature’s scalpel," demonstrating its ability to digest dead tissue without effecting live tissue.

The use of Papaya's alkaloid, carpine, has been shown to decrease the heart rate and also decrease central nervous system activity. In addition to the use of papain as a digestive enzyme, it is known to be a powerful abortive agent in India.

In Wholistic Healing, the use of Papaya for healing purposes is ongoing and new uses are yet being discovered. The use of Papaya as a nutritive protein digestant is well documented and farther-reaching enzyme therapy, properties, and uses for Papaya for serious diseases, are being pursued.

HEALTH NOTES

Digestion: A Key Health Factor

The digestive system includes all of the organs in the body that break down and absorb food. Organs that make up the digestive system include the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, and anus. Organs that help with digestion but are not a part of the digestive tract are the tongue, saliva glands, pancreas, liver, and gallbladder.

Digestion is a key to good health. Eating a proper diet and digesting properly makes our body run more efficiently. When we have bad digestion then we have problems. Many people have bloating and gas and don’t eliminate enough. These are some of the smaller problems. When our bodies don't get digestion under control there can be serious illness for us down the road.

Most people need to clean their colon, eat properly, and take digestive enzymes. Taking a colon cleanse helps the body get rid of all the toxic matter that has been stored up for years. We can help our bodies by eating 50% of our diet as raw fruits and vegetables and by staying away from refined and processed foods. Using digestive aids helps break down the food we eat so we get the nutrition into our bloodstream.

Enzymes (EN-zimes) are protein catalysts that speed chemical reactions in living organisms, proteins produced by cells to accelerate a specific chemical reaction without itself being altered. Enzymes are generally named by adding the ending "‑ase" to the name of the substance on which the enzyme acts (for example, protease is an enzyme that acts on proteins).

Excellent Digestive Aids

Food Enzymes is a broad-spectrum digestive enzyme supplement formulated to aid digestion of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. Stock No. 18369

Digestazyme is a digestive enzyme supplement containing specialized enzymes that the human body does not create on its own. These particular enzymes break down the cell walls of hard-to-digest plant fibers. Stock No. 16708

Hi-Lipase is a digestive enzyme supplement that aids the body in breaking down dietary fats (lipids) and oils, especially in cases where liver and/or gallbladder functioning is compromised. Hi-Lipase contains a mixture of enzymes that help promote digestion of high fat foods, including nuts, as well as digestion of carbohydrates, cellulose, and protein. Hi-Lipase also contains a blend of herbs to increase the body’s production of digestive fluids. Stock No. 16371

PDA is a digestive enzyme supplement designed especially to aid the digestion of dietary protein and enhance assimilation of important nutrients, including calcium and iron. PDA supplies both betaine HCl (hydrochloric acid) and pepsin in each capsule, as these substances are essential for optimal digestion of the protein, whether animal- or plant-derived. Stock No. 18375

Proactazyme is a digestive enzyme supplement designed to assist the digestion of all types of food, with the exception of dairy. Proactazyme contains a special combination of herbs that helps to buffer and stabilize the enzymes, preventing them from being destroyed by stomach acid. Stock No. 16439

Protease Plus is a digestive supplement. Protease enzymes break down proteins into smaller proteins and amino acids, maximizing digestion. They are found in the stomach and in the pancreatic and intestinal juices. As we grow older, our bodies produce fewer enzymes. When a deficiency of protease enzyme exists, undigested proteins can pass through the intestinal tract and remain undigested. These have been linked to a variety of unsavory health concerns. Protease Plus supports immunity by activating macrophages and natural killer cells. Protease also increases the flexibility of red blood cells, improving blood flow. Stock No. 16417

U.S. Government Funds Research on Prayer and Health

By Uwe Siemon-Netto, UPI Religion Correspondent, New York, Nov. 13 (UPI)
Monday, 13 November 2000 14:05 (ET)

U.S. scientists launched a five-year study to determine if prayer intervention can improve the health of cancer patients. The enterprise was funded by the National Institutes of Health, a federal agency, and was reported in the November issue of the Research News Journal.

The project was centered on black women in the early stages of breast cancer. According to Research News, blacks were chosen over whites because "African American women have a higher propensity to use spiritual healing than white women."

Moreover, "They have been found to be more vulnerable to stress associated with postoperative social functioning." The paper pointed to scientific evidence that stress weakens the mechanisms of a person's immune system. This increased the likelihood that a patient's tumor will recur or spread.

One task of the research project was to learn if a statement from the Epistle of James can be "scientifically validated," the journal said. The text reads, "Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him" (James 5:14).

The study was conducted by Dr. Diane Becker of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD, and Dr. Harold G. Koenig of Duke University in Durham, NC. Koenig, an associate professor of medicine and psychiatry, has been studying the effects of religion on health for 15 years.

A Johns Hopkins research nurse was randomly recruiting 40 patients with early breast cancer that has neither spread to other organs nor infiltrated the fatty tissue, muscle or bone around the breast. The study does not begin until one or two months after surgery and radiation treatment, Research News explained.

The participants would then meet a "comfort leader." This is a cancer survivor known for her strong religious convictions and prayer life. She "has been specially trained to be a witness to the women recovering from breast cancer."

The "comfort leader" will help the patient to organize and run a prayer group that may include five to eight friends or members of her church. For 24 weeks they were to follow a special prayer guide containing messages from the Bible.

The patient and her group will then pursue an ancient Judeo-Christian way of communicating with the Divine. Called "Centering Prayer," it was practiced in the Medieval Church and then almost forgotten until three Trappist monks in Spencer, Mass., rediscovered it in the 1970s.

At any given time, participants of a Centering Prayer session choose only one sacred word from Scripture. This word -- for example, grace, love, mercy, or Jesus -- would serve as a symbol of the supplicant's consent to God's presence and action.

In Becker's and Koenig's research project, the patients and their groups were to meet twice a day at a quiet place for at least 20 minutes. They were to close their eyes and silently think the Scriptural word they had previously agreed upon. The idea is that they would be resting in God. Should their thoughts drift, however, they would return to their chosen word to focus once again on the Divine.

The method differs from the ritualized and conversational prayers of traditional Christianity and meditation as practiced by eastern religions. In Centering Prayer sessions, participants "avoid analyzing their experience, harboring expectations or aiming at some specific goal such as repeating the sacred words continuously, having no thoughts, making the mind a blank, feeling peaceful, consoled, or achieving a spiritual presence," Research News writes.

"Those who guide centered prayer groups warn that often a person will feel tingling as the body relaxes," the paper reported. "This is just tension slowly oozing away." Another attribute of "deep spiritual attentiveness" is that one's extremities feel heavy.

Koenig hoped that in the long term the findings from this study "will give women and their religious communities a powerful tool for combating breast cancer." He said he believed that "getting the patients' minds off their disease makes a big difference."

Even more important, though, is that Centering Prayer would battle stress caused by cancer. It would do so by giving the patients "a sense of hope, social and psychological support, a positive belief system, and a sense of personal control through prayer."

While most religions teach that prayer intervention helps a patient, trying to validate "extra-personal spirituality" scientifically is a relatively new endeavor. One of its pioneers is Randolph C. Byrd, a San Francisco cardiologist. In 1988, he chronicled the therapeutic effects of intercessory prayer in a provoking study.

It analyzed 393 coronary care patients who were divided into two sections. One group was made up of patients who were not prayed for. But for the other group's members prayers were said regularly. Byrd discovered that the latter patients suffered significantly less from congestive heart failure, had fewer cardiopulmonary arrests, used fewer antibiotics and diuretics, had less pneumonia and were less frequently intubated.

"Even more surprising," wrote the journal Science Spirit, "is the revelation that the patients … did not know that they were being prayed for, nor did their doctors." Science Spirit concluded, "Byrd's study suggests that religiosity is a kind of antibiotic."

This is what Koenig trusted his research program would prove as well. According to Research News, "He hopes that research such as this will open the door to more studies on the effect that prayer may have on other diseases influenced by immune system activity, including AIDS."

Herb Of The Week: Grapine®

Health Notes: Buying Organic?

Just for Fun: Quik Quiz: Tobacco

This Week's Specials

HERB OF THE WEEK

Grapine®

NSP's Grapine contains proanthocyanidins derived from both grape seed and Maritime pine bark extracts.

Proanthocyanidins (PACS) are considered a highly bioavailable1 water-soluble class of flavonoids with unparalleled antioxidant ability. These nutrients are responsible for providing certain fruits and vegetables with their reddish-purple color. PACs have been found to be 50 times stronger than vitamin E and 20 times stronger than vitamin C as antioxidants. PACs are capable of crossing the blood-brain barrier and can remain in the bloodstream up to 72 hours to protect the brain and central nervous system against free radical damage.

Numerous clinical studies support the use of proanthocyanidins for treating microcirculatory disorders associated with varicose veins, improving both blood flow and venous appearance. PACs help increase the intracellular levels of vitamin C and decrease capillary fragility and permeability, improving capillary integrity and preventing bruising. PACs also help strengthen red blood cell membranes. Other research shows PACs are an important component in the prevention of heart disease1 particularly coronary thrombosis and early atherosclerosis. PACs have been found to inhibit the oxidation of LDL cholesterol in the bloodstream, which can lead to the formation of plaque along arterial walls.

PACs provide significant protection of collagen, the most abundant protein in the body. Collagen is the primary material in functional fluids, mucus linings, and connective tissues, including cartilage, ligaments, tendons, and the lining of blood vessels. PACs help secure collagen structures and prevent damage to collagen, thus helping to slow the appearance of aging in the skin and lowering the risks of skin cancer from sun-induced free radical damage.

Studies show PACs fight inflammation, reducing the pain of swollen joints and improving joint flexibility in arthritis and rheumatism sufferers. PACs have even been found to aid recovery for athletes undergoing strenuous workouts and competition.

With respect to vision, PACs help prevent capillary bleeding and the formation of floaters, and help reduce diabetic retinopathy.

Research shows PACs protect the liver and may also reduce the production of lipofuscin, a by-product of free radical damage to fats and proteins which can accumulate in the brain and heart, as well as in the skin causing liver "spots."

PACs enhance immunity and have been shown to reduce the frequency and severity of colds and allergies, especially hay fever, by countering histamine production in allergic responses. Research also indicates PACs may even help reduce the risk of cancer.

Extensive European research shows no adverse effects from proanthocyandin supplementation, even after ten years of use.

Grape seed extract contains the most powerful proanthocyandin of all, B2-3-0 gallate. Grape seed extract also yields specific antimicrobial, immunostimulating, and liver-protecting properties. Grape seed extract contains a concentration of 95% proanthocyanidins.

A controlled clinical study was conducted to determine the effects of grape seed proanthocyanidins on light vision, using a group of 100 participants with no ophthamological disorders. Half the group was given 200 mg a day of PACs for 5 weeks, while the other half received a control. Results showed that those taking PACs exhibited much greater resistance to glare than those in the control group. Researchers believe PACs provide improved retinal nutrition by increasing microcirculation.

Extracts from pine bark contain a rich supply of proanthocyanidins, as well as other water-soluble nutrients. Pine bark extract yields a concentration of 85% proanthocyanidins.

According to research conducted at the University of Nottingham, England, proanthocyanidins in pine bark extract help lower cholesterol. Other research indicates a single 100 mg supplement of pine bark extract may improve the health of capillary wall membranes allowing them to absorb vitamin C, which in turn, increases their resiliency and integrity. This action not only helps prevent bruising, but also helps to improve circulation. One study showed a single 20 mg supplement of pine bark extract improved vascular sensitivity by 82%.

Each tablet of Grapine with Protectors provides:

   * Proanthocyanidins (extracts of purple grape seeds & Maritime pine bark) - 20 mg
   * Vitamin C - 60 mg
   * Grape skin extract - 50 mg
   * SynerPro Protector base

Red grape skins are rich in anthocyanins, nutritional compounds which are known to protect and strengthen collagen and help prevent oxidative damage to the cardiovascular system.

The SynerPro® Protector base contains cruciferous vegetables, herbs and citrus bioflavonoids which supply additional antioxidant protection.

Each tablet of High Potency Grapine provides 60 mg Proanthocyanidins (extracts of purple grape seeds & Maritime pine bark)

SynerePro® Grapine® With Protectors - Stock No. 17501 (90 tablets)
Hi-Potency Grapine® - Stock No. 16993 (60 tablets)

NSP uses authentic Masquelier OPC grape seed extract. Grapine's proanthocyanidins readily cross the blood–brain barrier to help protect vital brain and nerve tissue from oxidative damage. They are among the most powerful antioxidants found in nature. Antioxidants help to neutralize free radicals--highly effective molecules that cause cell damage.

A brief word about the term "Pycnogenol"

The word "pycnogenol" (Organic Pycnogenol Compound, or OPC) was first introduced by Dr. Jack Masquelier in 1979 to describe a group of natural compounds (proanthocyanidins) he wanted to identify separately. In that flavonols have a tendency to join together, he used "pycno" from the Greek meaning "to come together" or "thicken," "gen" meaning "to generate," and "ols" from flavonols. Without Dr. Masquelier's knowledge and contrary to his wishes, Horphag Research Ltd., representing themselves as the "owner" of the word, illegally obtained a U.S. trademark for the word "Pycnogenol." The trademark applies only to Horphag's pine bark extract. Legal process is currently underway to cancel Horphag's trademark registration in the U.S.

HEALTH NOTES

Buying Organic?

New labeling standards should make it easier

Are you buying organic foods this year? If so, you aren't alone. Organic food sales have ballooned from $180 million in 1980 to over $6.5 billion last year--and not just in health food stores. In fact, government stores sales made up 56 percent of organic food sales this year. And while organic food sales make up only 2 percent of national food sales, the organic market is definitely booming--especially on Wall Street. Furthermore, experts expect that figure to more than double by 2010.

In response, the USDA has finally released an official definition of what foods qualify as "organic" and has developed labeling standards that should be in effect by this summer. A few months ago, an official definition of what foods were organic didn't even exist.

Why the delay? For the last decade organic farmers and conventional farming organizations have been debating the need for Federal organic labeling. Conventional farmers feared that the organic labels would create an unfair bias against conventional products. In fact, following the USDA statement in December, the Grocery Manufacturers of America voiced their complaints about the new organic standards, claiming that the labels will mislead consumers into believing that organic products are safer and more nutritious.

Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman, government spokesman for the labeling changes, denies the accusations of bias. He believes that although the organic seal will give more validity to organic products, the seal does not imply that organic foods are safer or more nutritious. Of course, proponents of organic foods believe that organic foods are safer (containing fewer toxins like pesticides) and more nutritious (containing more trace minerals and nutrients), as well as being better for the environment, because organic growing practices are kinder to the soil, sky, and water.

What do the USDA standards mean for you? Well, for starters, you get better organic foods for your buck. With an official and national standard for what foods can be called organic, you now can know with certainty that the organic foods you purchase will contain no synthetic pesticides and no added chemicals, and that organic farmers will use no genetic engineering, no irradiation, and no sewage fertilization. In addition, livestock raised under these standards will be given 100 percent organic feed, and they cannot be treated with antibiotics. Prior to the standardization, consumers had to trust often misleading labeling claims on the organic products.

But even with the new standards, is it worth it to purchase organic? Americans who turn to organic foods often find that their monthly grocery costs increase substantially. In fact. in 1998, the average costs of organic foods were 57 percent higher than conventional foods. Furthermore, a recent airing of [the TV program] 20/20 claimed that organic foods can contain dangerous bacteria like E. coli and salmonella.

On the other hand, more and more doctors believe that organic foods are safe and worth the extra cost. Doctors who support organic eating believe that the cumulative effects of toxins in our food, water, and air can be hazardous to our health, and anything we can do to reduce our toxin exposure is worth it.

If you would like to go organic but are working with a limited food budget, there are still measures you can take. For instance, some foods are more notorious for pesticide residue than others. If you can buy only limited amounts of organic foods, start with these (see "Pesticide Residue" below). Citrus foods, on the other hand, are often not high risk, since they have thick skins that we don't we don't eat and that absorb most of the toxins. Other fruits and vegetables that are not known to have dangerous pesticide residues include asparagus, bananas, broccoli, cauliflower, cherries, corn, onions, pineapple, sweet peas, and watermelon. These foods are considered the ten cleanest by the FDA and EPA.

Also, wash all produce you buy, organic or not. There are several new produce-cleaning sprays are available that may help. But a better (more natural) procedure is to wash your produce in water with a few drops of grapefruit seed extract or Sunshine Concentrate (see below). In addition , you can regularly take an antioxidant supplement (like NSP High Potency Grapine or Super Antioxidant, below), which will help the body remove toxins.

Above all, do not stop eating fruits and vegetables. They are essential to good health, whether you decide to "go organic" or not.

Pesticide Residue

According to FDA and EPA compiled data, the 10 worst foods for pesticide residue are apples, peaches, raspberries, potatoes, grapes, celery, strawberries, pears, spinach, and green beans.

New Labeling Standards

100% Organic: Any products with this label contain only organic ingredients by law.

Organic: A product with this label must have at least 95% organic ingredients

Made With Organic: This label can only be used on packaging for products with 50 to 90% organic ingredients. If the product has less than 50% organic ingredients, it must say the percentage.

HERB OF THE WEEK

Stevia (Stevia rebaudiana)

This important South American herb which grows wild from Argentina to Mexico also grows well in southwestern sections of the United States. Stevia is anywhere from 10 to 30 times sweeter than sugar, yet it has only one calorie per ten leaves. The sweetness of the extract in which various forms of stevia are presently sold ranges from 100 to 300 times that of table sugar. It is the ideal non-caloric sweetener. Unlike with saccharine and other chemical sweeteners, one need not be concerned about its having any carcinogenic properties. It has a long history of use in South America in the treatment of diabetes, and some studies claim that it reduces blood glucose levels. Above all, as an herbal non-caloric sweetener of choice, the extract can be used in cooking and as an sweetener of herbal extracts and teas.(1-3)

Stevia adds a slightly anise taste to whatever you are cooking. Stevia can be made into an infusion by putting a spoonful into a cup of warm water and then adding it to whatever you want to sweeten.(2)

Stevia is unusually sweet due to two basic compounds it contains: stevioside and rebaudioside. In one study researchers found stevioside to be 300 times sweeter than sucrose (a sugar molecule composed of the combination of fructose and glucose). That's an amazing fact when one considers the absence of calories in stevia! It has practically no caloric content. Some say stevia actually satisfies "sugar cravings."(3) It is also said to reduce nicotine craving.(4)

This herb has also provided an effective tool in the support of normal blood sugar levels. In one study, stevia improved glucose tolerance and decreased plasma glucose levels in normal adult volunteers.(3)

Stevia is an herbal food and contains properties which are useful for the body other than just as a natural sweetener. Stevia is now being used widely in Japan in soy sauce, chewing gum, and soft drinks as well as other items. A study done at Hiroshima University School of Dentistry suggests that stevia actually suppresses the growth of dental caries. It does not feed the bacteria as sugar does. Not only has it been shown to have no harmful effects on diabetics and individuals suffering from hypoglycemia, but it may actually help the blood sugar levels remain stable. Studies completed seem to show a correlation between stevia and the regulation of blood sugar levels. One of the studies of 24 individuals suffering from hypoglycemia showed no signs of intolerance from stevia use. In the studies done, no harmful effects have been reported. Stevia is high in magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, and selenium. It also contains manganese, silicon, sodium, and a small amount of calcium, iron, and zinc.(5)

Biochemical Constituents. Stevia's sweet flavor is due to the presence of the complex molecule stevioside, a glycoside comprised of glucose, sophorose, and steviol.(1)

HEALTH NOTES

GUIDELINES FOR A HEALTHY DIET

Eat a low carbohydrate diet of approximately 1200 calories per day, at least 50% of which should be fruits and vegetables. Vegetables are best for you when eaten raw or lightly steamed.

Drink lots of pure water every day. Even city water should at least be filtered with a good filtration system to remove as much chlorine and fluoride as possible before you drink it - reverse-osmosis process is best.

As a rule of thumb, always drink at least half of your body weight in ounces of water each day. For example: a 100-pound person should drink 50 ounces of water every day. An easy way to start is to put the purified water into 10-ounce containers and have 5 chilled and ready each day. You can add real lemon slices to the water for flavor.

Avoid refined sugars and all artificial sweeteners. "Every American consumes an average of 135 pounds of sugar each year. This accounts for 500-600 calories a day, amounting to over 2 pounds per week. The only benefit sugar offers is quick energy. … Natural sugars are carbohydrates, that are important sources of energy for us. Carbohydrates can be divided into three categories: monosaccharides (simple sugars), disaccharides (double sugars), and polysaccharides (starches and fibers, including breads and potatoes). A study published in the Journal of Reproductive Medicine, 1984 issue, found that the intake of sugar, dairy, and artificial sweeteners correlated positively with the incidence of candida vulvovaginitis. When the diet omitted those elements, more than 90% of the patients were found to be free of yeast infections for over a year. One of the major drawbacks of sugar is that it raises the insulin level, inhibiting the release of growth hormones which in turn depresses the immune function. People who consume high amounts of sugar and low fiber diets are more prone to cancer, Science News, November 10, 1990."(1)

Never, never, never consume NutraSweet, Equal, Sweet-and-Low, or any other artificial sweeteners. The primary ingredient in most popular artificial sweeteners is aspartame. Since its approval in 1981, critics have charged that aspartame causes myriad adverse health effects, ranging from headaches and dizziness to seizures. Saccharin, which has been available for nearly a century, is truly artificial sweetener, it is made from petroleum! "Although the FDA proposed a ban on saccharin after studies suggested a link between it and bladder tumors in rats, it was saved by public demand to be left on the market."(1)

When using sugar, always use raw sugar. A wonderfully sweet herbal alternative to sugar is stevia.

Stay away from white flour. Most products made from white flour contain only empty calories - they provide weight but little or no nutrition. Whole grains breads are best for you, as they contain not only great nutrition, but also provide valuable fiber to help keep the colon clean and in good working order.

Never drink canned or bottled soda of any kind! The carbonic acid will eat holes in the stomach, and many authorities agree that the aluminum from the cans is a major contributor to Alzheimer's.

You need the right kind of fat to lubricate your body. The best oils (fats) are olive oil, flaxseed oil, and Omega 3 oils (fish oils). If you are a vegetarian and want to avoid eating fish, be sure to add flaxseed oil to your daily diet.

Your diet should be low in red meat, and should contain absolutely no pork (bacon, ham, sausage) or shellfish of any kind. Most Americans believe that a "serving" of red meat is a 12-16 ounce steak. In actuality, a healthy diet should include no more than about 4 ounces of red meat daily. Pork is absolutely chock full of parasites, and is considered by most natural health professionals to be a leading contributor to arthritis and other diseases. Shellfish are the ocean's garbage trucks, whose diets consist of the dead and decaying bodies of their neighbors.

A great book is Eat Right For Your Body Type by Dr. Peter J. D"Adamo, an excellent resource for helping you reach your ideal weight. This book has many great ideas from eating to exercising.

Be sure to get at least 20 minutes of exercise every day. Walking and swimming are great ways to exercise, but be sure to check with your health care professional before starting any exercise program.

Take care of your body and it will take care of you.

JUST FOR FUN

Water vs. Coke®

I received this information in my email this past week. Don't know if it's true or not, but I thought it was at least entertaining, and wanted to pass it along.

75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated. (Likely applies to half world population.)

In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is often mistaken for hunger.

Even MILD dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as much as 3%.

One glass of water shuts down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a U-Washington study.

Lack of water, the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.

Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.

A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a printed page.

Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79%, and one is 50% less likely to develop bladder cancer.

Are you drinking the amount of water you should every day?

Coke: The REAL Thing??

No wonder coke tastes soooo good:

1. In many states (in the USA) the highway patrol carries two gallons of Coke in the trunk to remove blood from the highway after a car accident.

2. You can put a T-bone steak in a bowl of coke and it will be gone in two days.

3. To clean a toilet: Pour a can of Coca-Cola into the toilet bowl and let the "real thing" sit for one hour, then flush clean. The citric acid in Coke removes stains from vitreous china.

4. To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers: Rub the bumper with a crumpled-up piece of aluminum foil dipped in Coca-Cola.

5. To clean corrosion from car battery terminals. Pour a can of Coca-Cola over the terminals to bubble away the corrosion.

6. To loosen a rusted bolt: Applying a cloth soaked in Coca-Cola to the rusted bolt for several minutes.

7. To bake a moist ham: Empty a can of Coca-Cola into the baking pan, wrap the ham in aluminum foil, and bake. Thirty minutes before the ham is finished, remove the foil, allowing the drippings to mix with the Coke for a sumptuous brown gravy. (Of course, no knowledgeable student of natural health would even *consider* eating ham in the first place.)

8. To remove grease from clothes: Empty a can of coke into a load of greasy clothes, add detergent, And run through a regular cycle. The Coca-Cola will help loosen grease stains. It will also clean road haze from your windshield.

FYI:
1. The active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric acid. Its Ph is 2.8. It will dissolve a nail in about 4 days.

2. To carry Coca-Cola syrup (the concentrate) the commercial truck must use the Hazardous Material placards reserved for highly corrosive materials.

3. The distributors of coke have been using it to clean the engines of their trucks for about 20 years.

Still Want To Drink Up?

Let me emphasize that although we recommend abstinence from all carbonated beverages as a healthy rule of life, none of the statements in the above article have been verified. It is presented solely for its entertainment value.
