Empirical.

If you are going to stick one on the side my feeling is it's best to also stick one opposite, facing it.

In a room when you do this the energy seems to expand to fill the whole space and you can also use the same principle when treating a large organ, such as a liver, using the larger Energy Cells.

Yep, under is better than on the side, though, as you say, there is no downside to sticking it on the side, other than it not working most efficiently. LCDs...
