I find that orthotics are necessary when dealing with anatomically short legs whether congenital or due to accidents.I actually had a client that had a shorter leg due to an accident (nearly 2”) and I chose to have him wear his orthopedic shoes while I took his before and after pictures.The pictures during the 10 sessions were very frustrating because the shifts in his body from session to session were quite erratic.I humbly must admit that only at the 8th session I caught on to the fact that some of his shoes were badly worn to the point that they were worsening his posture considerably.I was happy to find that because it was easy to have him dump the old shoes or make a flower bed out of them and get an instant improvement in his posture but I also decided that in future I will take pictures of people as they are, bare foot thus, I can eliminate one variable.Of course living in California one would hope that the floor doesn’t change shape either…
I hope that by replying to your email I made my point clearer in regards to the use of orthotics.I prefer not to see them on feet that are distorted because of habitually poor biomechanics.
The Pilates foot corrector sounds interesting I will ask around about it.Do you have any resources?

Pilates has a tool called a "foot corrector" that is excellent for developing more intelligence in the feet and muscular tonus. It has a spring and metal pad secured to a wooden platform. The client aligns the knee and ankle over the foot and then uses the reisitance of the springs to retrain the instrinsic muscles of the foot and associated lower leg muscles to fire eccentrically and concentrically to mobilize and support the arches. It can be effective with plantar fasciatis and low/high arches etc.
