Dear Henry, Don't worry about ruffling any feathers..it takes a ruffler and a rufflee. One of my favorite book titles is Terry Cole-Whittaker's, "What you think of me is none of my business". After all the processing and training and psychologizing and searching I am now 16 years sober and attend 12 Step meetings regularly. I notice that the effectiveness of these meetings has everything to do with the perceived experience of safety of the participants. Alcoholics can be terrible judgemental and righteous toward Addicts and the Addicts can be that way toward the alcoholics and so forth. Hopefully some love and tolerance begins to replace the exclusive like attitudes and the ability to "listen for similarities" begins to get some grounding. The safety of sharing similar experiences is where the value is. The locked in behaviors and postural holdings have secrecy, sensitivity and a sense of being alone as psychic stuckness that keep the physical holding in place long enough for the connective tissue to glue. What happens in bodywork sessions, especially any of the SI sessions, is a safety and vulnerability and intimacy that is unique in Human experience. Really unique, this interechange. When I can relate authentically to my clients and more importantly they can relate to me then we both are able let go of some stories held as energy in our tissues and postures. Werner Erhard used to explain that this is called "recreation", that is two things cannot occupy the same space at the same time. Emotional energy occupies space and when I can feel it just like you feel it and we both recognize that we both feel it then it dissappears for both of us. This can happen, as Tom says, with a simple, authentic nod or grunt.....but it has to be authentic. Can't fake it at this level. The spirit knows. Hence the value of the 12 step meetings sharing common experiences. Whoever is attracted to you obviously has something in common with you and is there to work on it, I say. Our exceptional skill (thank you Ida) at recognizing and working with the physical manifestations provides the safe structure for the complete expression. However you do that is perfect for you and God Bless you. And however I do it is perfect for me. Ida Rolf had and Joseph Heller has a tremendous storehouse of experience and hence forth compassion to allow for most any experience to be shared and they could duplicate(recreate) it completely with all the somatic references included or felt. The ability to feel is what is important. I spent 18 months in Viet Nam as a U.S. Marine and I can relate to anyone else who was there in a way that someone who wasn't can't. Ida and Joseph represent to me very "safe" people. That quality probably comes with age and experience and wisdom. I can help the people that can relate to me. And the people that cannot relate to me may relate to you. It is my intrepretation of "physician heal thyself". As I get clearer and less stuck and more able to "feel" or at least be with my feelings without reacting or hiding then I am able to be with more and more people. By the way, no professional health care providers are trained in the kind of intimacy that we get to experience daily. None of them.....we are the front lines for this kind of Human healing interaction.
Thanks for the "thread" and the continuing discussion......Jim Dohn
