Dear Henry, As you may or may not know, Hellerwork was created by Joseph Heller, the first president of the Rolfing School, to be a form of structural integration where these so-called "emotional" issues would have a place and a structure for being openly recognized and allowed appropriately. The questions you raise are certainly legitimate and most of them are covered in great detail in the Hellerwork Training (along with the structural work). My first suggestion is to begin to allow the emotional expression to be present and in no way interfere with the necessary structural work. It is not a case of either/or..it is very much inclusive. Secondly I would recommend that you trade some sessions with a Local Hellerwork Practitioner and begin to explore some of this kind work for yourself. I am an instructor for the San Diego School of Hellerwork and I live in Long Beach, CA. One of the owners of the San Diego School is Stephen Bulger (Chintamani@...) (619) 281 7731....he is very busy. A newer practitioner in San Diego is Dyan Burgess (dansedelavie@...) (619) 670 7607. I'm certain Dyan would welcome a trade with you. One of the public source books for information about the early Rolf experiences is "Bodymind" by Ken Dyckwald. This book goes into great detail about how his Rolfing experiences opened him up emotionally and how they handled it. I don't know about "healing" either but I do know that as our bodies loosen up the grip of connective tissue we all have something to say about how we learned to hold them tight in the first place. Sometimes that expression of "what happened" will cover the full range of emotional expression. To the extent we can be present to allow someone the safety to share without judgement or attempts to fix or blame, then our clients can really let go of stuff that has held them for years or more. This space is a gift and it is a gift you give to your clients to be open enough for them to feel safe. Keep up the great work. Dr. Jim Dohn
