What are the tongue exercises please - like sticking tongue way out as in
Lion pose in Yoga? What else also?
Yes. but what I am referring to was developed originally for speech
pathology. Chiropractor employer passed it on to me to teach to clients. I
found it extremely helpful in cranial and CranioSacral work and have
expanded and refined it as I have gained experience.
The Hyoid is anchored to the larynx, sternal notch and scapula by various
muscles and tendons then superior to the sphenoid. My clinical
observations are that if the tongue is extended out the side of the mouth
that has the anterior eye and the tip is curled up or out the opposite side
and the tip is curled down the tension pattern can change allowing sphenoid
movement. The most effective will be the one that is most difficult but
briefly switch to the alternate for rest and then resume. I almost always
have to remind clients it dose not help to bite down on the tongue to keep
it out; it is an exercise not a position.
If change is limited check for suture restrictions, hip distortion and
trigger points in the muscles.
This brings up what I learned from The Bodies Exhibition in Seattle. One of
the insertions that I never could understand from charts and books was the
omohyoid. The dissection clearly showed that the only practical access was
between the clavicle and the scapula. He had carved away the overlaying
portion of the trapizius so that you could look down in there and see it.
Since then I have successfully worked my finger down in there and relieved
trigger points while the client was doing the tongue exercise.
The other major thing I learned was in the carpel tunnel I will have to
write that up another time.
I am currently working with a client with a smiler deviated septum. The
above helps but it is not the complete answer so I hope someone else can
share.
