Hi everyone.
It has been soooo long since I have posted on here as I have been going thru
alot. First I am shocked about Maggie leaving the group but I do understand as I
have felt myself ignored at times but as i look back the`questions or statements
I have posted may be there was no one at the time who had any helpful info to
give me ...does that make sense? Your posting to a large exclusive group and no
one wants to pass on wrong or misleading info . So I just plug on and later re
ask my question and sometimes someone does understand and answers my questions.
I dont take it to heart  I know this group has alot of heart and would help if
they could.
Second about work or not to work.My hubby pushes me to work because he feels
without work i would be worse off. I do believe I may not be as bad as others
and i am lucky to have a very generous pain management Dr and I take my pain
pills and cope. I wish I could quit working but money is a big issue and maybe
my hubby is right i will end up a couch potato and maybe stiffen up more then I
am now.
But people just dont understand what a pain disorder is like living with. As you
can see from my pics I posted of my daughters wedding besides the puffy
prednisone look i dony look sick.(well how could U look sick in sunny
Jamaica!!!!) My fatigue has been very bad lately but I will be 45 the end of Aug
and this will be yr 9 for my AS and dont forget I also have RSD and the pain
from that has elevated to a point where i have to take baths because the water
from the shower hurts too much now. I havent heard anything about my treatment
for my rsd since they canceled it in May so I dont know when relief will come. I
just take enuff pain meds to put an elephany down!!!!
I wish some days others could live in our bodies for one day.even if its our
good days they wouldnt be`able to cope for 24 hours. I just surround myself with
my closest friends and some of my family who understand. Some family just thinks
i should exercise and loose weight and i would feel better....YA!!!! just get me
off prednisone and I could loose weight.
My office manager doesnt even understand and she puts me with the Dr that has
the toughest and latest hours because  unlike my younger coworkers I give 110%
and she forgets im sick...I go home and sleep 14 hours and miss out on life
..for what ...work??? where your really not appreciated. I mean I guess i am cuz
modt of the Dr's I work with request me cuz i do work .unlike the younger
healthy girls that are lazy....Im just tired of being so tired after work I miss
out on so much.
Am I making any sense??????
I guess if the fatigue would slow down I could handle the pain. My freinds stop
inviting me out with them cuz Im never up to it. or raraely. and if I do have a
good day Im going to spend it with my hubby and kids.(who are grown as u c in
the pics.) Walk the dogs around the resivoir  go to the track and see my hubby
race.SHOP!!!!! LOL
My Rheumy wont even think of treatment until I can get my RSD under controll and
I have NOOO idea when they will get the new batch of ketamine for my infusions.
Does that sound right to any of you???? let my AS get worse cuz you want to be
sure what pain goes with what syndrome???? I love my rheumy  cuz he was the one
who waited it  out till I got iritis and he found me HLA B27 pos. 3 yrs of
waiting with me and telling me its not in my head that it takes time with auto
immune disorders to come out completely...when other rhurmys said it was all
depression.....well now it is....but before it wasnt.
I guess I am rambling out of frustration ....im sooooooo tired I want to wake up
and fel like i actually slept and have energy to face the day.
OH YEAH i was just out of commish from my very first sinus infection. was out of
work for a week. was like a constajnt brain freeze and the antibiotics made me
throw up so much I lost 15 lbs!!! not a  fun way but.....i'll take it. I have a
new respect for people that get sinus infections alot. Sorry guys my heart goes
out to you all.
Well.......thanks for eading all this if you have made it to the end...Im just
venting...And to My Jersey Girls if you want you can look me up at work. and
maybe we can have a nice lunch one weekend . I work for Ocean Eye
Institute.(spencer is that TMI??? delete if u have to) just say its....from RSD
and I will know who U are.
Hugs to all my AS friends for being here. even if U dont reply to my mad mid
night rantings your all still here if I need you!!!!
Carla

I've never been able to come up with enough $ to get the memory foam
mattress yet... I'm going to one day! Seems something else always comes along
and
I have to pay for something else. Anyway...I have bought several memory form
mattress toppers! I have 4 now..lol I had to buy a king size and cut it
down to get the proper size. I have a queen size bed and a Q bed is 60"
wide. Weird but all the memory foam pads I have seen (even in Sears, etc) are
all only 55" wide, which is more the wideth of a full size bed. hmmm I do not
like that... it's too narrow on each side...
so I bought king size and cut it down a bit...
Next went to Auto Zone and bought a can of spray adhesive and glued them
together. About 1 yr later I bought one more and did the same thing. Last
Christmas I got one more...lol and once again glued it to it.

SO now I have about 6" of memory foam on top of my pillow top mattress!.
Covered it all with a quilted mattress pad to hold it in place well.

IT HELPS... I have to sleep on my left side all the time. I haven't been
able to sleep on my right side in 10 yrs now. Everysince I had a car accident
way back then...Don't know why... but if I do it's not long before that right
hip (top thigh area) starts to throb... I can barely roll over and get off of
it..
Rheumy used to say it was refered pain from my back... ? well that bum disc
was fixed yrs ago and it didn't affect that at all... so he changed it to
"referred pain from my R SI joint"
well if it's not one...it's another! who knows?

anyway.. the memory foam really did help some...I can lay on my right side
for maybe 45 min now...before it starts to ache too bad...
It's definately a help.. more comfortable and I do sleep better... I even
got used to the little memory foam pillow.

Now if I could get Mr. Jimmy, my doggie boy, to "move over" a bit. lol He
likes my pillow too... Everytime I wake up during the night... there he is...
right in the middle... stretched out long with his head on the edge of my
pillow... and his back up against mine...Winter time, that's not so bad...
summer it can get warm... so I just turn down the ac some and get a blanket...
lol
He's just a little boy... only about 15 lbs... (nice to be so loved) ;o)

betty

I love my Tempur-Pedic too. I have the adjustable and always sleep with the
head and knee adjusted up a bit. Makes a huge difference for me. The only
thing that I would ever say bad about it is that it smelled like dirty gym socks
for the first month! GACK! What a stench!! I used a nice lavender bed linen
spray to tone it down but I could still smell it. I found leaving the blankets
pulled down during the day, the smell wasn't as bad.

Just as an update, I survived the big family gathering/birthday party for my
mother-in-law on Saturday. I busted my butt setting up the community center
(chairs and folding tables) by myself...and was on my feet all day keeping
things going. By the evening, I sat down in a chair at the bonfire to make a
s'more and couldn't get back up. Oh my!! I am very glad the party went perfect
and that I did it (people only turn 70 once and deserve a big party)! But I
won't be doing another party for awhile...or will at least learn to delegate and
draft other people into doing the heavy work.

I have a new boss at work and had to go through the whole ordeal of explaining
my health issues and why I have FMLA so when I have a flare up and can't walk or
have a migraine, or my Crohn's flares up, I can have a day off and not get
fired. :-\ It was a weird and I have no idea how she's going to take it. Some
bosses treat you bad once they find out you're a cripple.

Mom had surgery yesterday on her right leg.  They removed the external fixator
since the pin sites were getting infected. The infection has NOT spread to the
bone or the skin graft.  She will be going to a LTAC (long term acute care)
hospital for 6 weeks for IV antibiotics.  She is doing ok now and is happy to
have the fixator gone. The doctor said the bones are starting to heal (after 3
months) and should be ok with the splint cast as long as she doesnt put any
weight on it.
Thats it for now.   Thanks for all the good thoughts and prayers.   Yall have a
good week.

Hi David~

Good observations regarding the Tempur-Pedic; I agree with just about everything
you said. Do you have the adjustable frame? I cannot sit cross-legged any more
because my hips just won't cooperate, but I do sit on my bed to watch TV.

Like you, I don't move as much while sleeping, but I haven't noticed it being a
real detriment to my lack of ease of movement in the morning. It's not good
anyway, so I just plow through the first hour trying to stay upright, lol.

All in all, I think you gave an excellent review...very accurate as far as I'm
concerned. Oh! I purchased a very nice high end mattress cover that helps cut
down on the warmth a bit, which is useful, particularly during the hot weather.
We don't have prolonged heat here in Seattle like that of Texas, but right now
we're in a hot spell with daytime temps in the 90's. Last night it didn't get
below 70, which is unusual here.

FYI, when purchasing a mattress cover, be sure to look for one that does not
trap heat. Anything fleece-like or something with polyester batting will trap
heat and make it even warmer.

I love my Tempur-Pedic bed and wouln't trade it for something else. The first
month, though, was weird.

Tyler :-)

Howdy All,

Some of you may remember early last year where I solicited feedback on
memory foam mattresses. Well, we purchased the Tempurpedic Deluxe
Queen size, and after over a year, here are my thoughts:

Motion Transfer - these things really don't move that much, just like
they show on the commercials. This is great for when one or the other
of us are moving around in bed or get up in the middle of the night,
etc...

Comfort - Oh, yeah. Very comfy once you get past the break in period.
For the first couple of months, it was like a brick. Now its more
like a brick with padding, but I do admit that I enjoy sleeping in my
own bed (i travel a lot).

Stiffness - Here's where I'm a little mixed. I think sometimes I
actually wake up with more pain and / or stiffness than when I travel
and stay in hotel beds. I've got a theory on this - using a memory
foam mattress, you don't move around as much. This allows your body
to stay in one position longer and encourages stiffness. When I sleep
on a spring mattress, I move around a bit more and don't stay in a
single position as long, so I don't wind up with as much stiffness.

Sleep - All in all, I do get pretty good sleep as I don't move around
as much. I think since I move more in a spring mattress, I don't
sleep as soundly. I wake more rested with the memory foam, but with
the caveats mentioned above.

Sitting up - I wouldn't recommend sitting cross legged or knees up.
You sink a lot more in these things, so when most of your weight is in
one area, namely your rear sinking further in to the bed while you're
sitting up, you tend to bend the sacroiliac in ways that we all know
are not happy.

Temperature - You're gonna be warm. Really warm. We live in Texas.
Lemme say that again. REALLY WARM. If you're gonna get one, I'd
recommend getting one of the newer ones with better circulation
through the mattress. The way these things work is through heat
transfer. Your body produces heat, and that heat is what forms the
foam around you. The mattress keeps that heat up against your body.
Its great in the winter time, but not so happy during warmer seasons.
We have two fans in the room.

I think that's about all I have for now.

Hi there Raquel,

Yea, it's Dr. Anthony doing injections for me. I just got back from having
my second one -- Hope it works longer than the first - my SI joint was all
but pain free for 6 days. I'm heading in for another 4 weeks of physical
therapy starting this week. The doc thinks that getting the inflammation
reduced in the joint might allow the PT to get it back in place and keep it
there. Yep, he's in the building right next to the spine and back surgery
center. They have a really efficient office . . . the administrative staff
runs a little cold . . . but once behind the treatment doors, everyone is
very kind, funny, and understanding.

I was diagnosed after a bought of unremitting post op pain. I had a
hysterectomy and more for pelvic floor prolapse last July. Actually, Dr.
Litwiler from the urology clinic near where you work was one of the
surgeons. Immediately after the procedure, I had severe pain in my lower
back. Everyone said it was normal and would go away but it didn't - not one
bit. The surgeons were no real help at all even though they were very caring
and concerned. My primary care doctor, Kala Omstead, has been wonderful
through the whole ordeal - referring me to someone else as things didn't
work. Had a couple of months of PT, bunches of x-rays and MRIs, and meds,
but nothing helped for long. Finally, the Rheumatologist she send me to,
signaled by MRI findings, tested me for the AS gene. It was a total surprise
when it came out positive. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I had
something like this going on. Actually, the Rheumy didn't want to do
anything for the SI joint pain for another few months to see if it would
self resolve on Mobic but Dr. Omstead thought that was silly and sent me to
pain management. As I said in an earlier email to the group - I was forever
having my thyroid levels pulled because of joint pain, fatigue, and brain
fog at levels that were sometimes almost indescribable. (I'm hypothyroid).
So I guess the diagnosis has been a long time coming for me. Hindsight is
very revealing . . . I've been vaguely symptomatic for a long, long time.
It's probably a good thing that the surgeons wrestled around a little too
hard for my joints during the procedure or I might still be pulling thyroid
levels and trying to keep a still upper lip about the pain and fatigue. Now
I can at least be pro-active about my health and quality of life.

Thanks for sharing your story! It sure does help us newbies to read other's
paths through this diagnosis.

Janet

I too think I might have been unclear. Did you say that Dr, Anthony
did your shot? He is is who did my mothers. Dr. Martucci is at St.
Johns he is who did two of my shots. (they didnt help at all. went
to another dr.) If my memory is correct... Dr. Anthony is with Dr.
Martucci at St. johns but also has a practice out south where you
go. I might not be correct on that but I guess you could say three
years is a long time ago for me. hee hee

I was diagnosed 3 years ago. I have a ppo so I am able to see a
specialist without Primary Dr approval. I have been to a lot of them
to help me with pain in my back so if you ever need a recomendation
of a doc just let me know. I finally found Dr. Stanely at Tulsa Bone
and Joint. he is highly known and he helped me alot. He is the one
that decided to do an injection into my SI joint and I was in
heaven. Dr. Martucci I am sure is a good pain doc as well however
when he did the epedural (sp) shots I am guessing he did not do them
in my SI joint because I did not get any relief. He did two shots
and then sent me to have surgery. He sent me to a doc at the tulsa
bone and joint. but at the time it was going to be another month
before I could get in to see him and I needed to get rid of the pain
and get back to work. One of my closest friends was an assistant to
Dr. Phillips. he is an orthopedic doc. I called her and she got me
in the next day. When I went to see dr phillips he said that surgery
would not help. I was ready to die when he said that. It was hard
for me to tell him where the pain was coming from. It was kind of
wierd to have such horrible pain and not be able to pinpoint where it
was coming from. I just kept telling him that is was deep. He pushed
around and marked with a sharpie and then did some shots. My husband
was there and he said he had never seen a shot so big. hee hee He
asked me if if hurt and I told him ....when you are in as much pain
as I am a shot even if it is a steroid shot really does not hurt. I
had some steroid injections into my heels a few weeks ago and
everyone asks me the same thing. I am in so much pain in my heels
that having a steriod shot in them is nothing. hee hee. aahhhh the
days that the thought of a needle made me sweat. hee hee I used to
be terrified of any kind of shot. but now that my rheumy has me
getting blood work done every 3 months I have no problems at all hee
hee Also injecting my enbel evey week.

Well that is some of my story. hee hee What is yours? What docs
have you seen? How long did it take to get a diagnoses? When were
you diganosed? How long did you have symptoms before you decided to
go to a doc? At the place that you get your shots with Dr. anthony
isnt it a surgery center also? I think it is the one that I have
heard of. I heard that if you are going to have surgery on your back
that that is the place to go. I have heard that the care out there
is unbeatable as far as if you have to stay there after surgery. I
am not afraid of ever having surgery but I am scared of staying in a
hospital for after care. Having other people be in control of taking
care of me scares me. My mother has had to stay in the hospital at
hillcrest and it was a nightmare. She almost died becasue of the
care that she got. the doctors were great but the nurses that took
care of her were not. they really did not give a "bleep".

Well, wow you might want to take a nap after reading this. hee hee

I think we are going to be a great support for eachother. Its nice
to have someone in the same city and having access to the same docs.

looking forward to hearing back from you

Is there anyone going to the Minneapolis SAA seminar on July 12? I
plan on going and am wondering if anyother Spondyville resident from
the Midwest also paln on going. I live in Blaine one of the northern
suburbs of Minneapolis. With some help I would like to investigate
the possibility of staring a support group in this area. There is
currently none in the upper Midwest.

Raquel,

Sorry, I wasn't too clear - it's the doctor's I'm not sold on yet, not the
diagnosis. I've only seen them a couple of times. My primary care doc seems
to like them a lot but I didn't have any other recommendations. Yes, Dr.
Anthony is on 71st street near the new Jenks mall off of hwy 75. Gorgeous
building. Dr. Lawrence is also on 71st street but in between Sheridan and
Yale. I've not heard of your mom's doc but then again, I'm new to this
stuff.

Hang on to age 39 until the last second. The forty's go zooming by once
you're in them LOL. How long ago were you dx'd with AS?

Janet

I think Dr. Anthony is who did my moms injection a few years back.
Is he on 71st? Dr. Lawrence.. Where is he at? My rheumy is Dr.
Surbeck at St. Johns.

This is so great to have someone who lives where I do and be the same
age. I am 39. Well actually I will be 40 in August but for now I am
39 hee hee

Why are you not sold on you diagnoses?

Raquel

The more I think about it I think Dr. Anthony is also with the pain
doc that I had 3 years ago. His name is Dr. Martucci. He is at ST.
Johns.

There is no such things as a dumb question... I think they are two different
things. I have started getting the SI injections about 3 weeks ago. It is 2
shots directly into each joint (one shot in each joint). The best way to
describe it is they put it where your butt dimples are. I have gotten a total of
3 shots so far- because my first appointment I could only get one shot because I
passed out- but they are helping me, so the pain and soreness after the shot it
I am thinking is going to be worth it. My doctor said it should last 6 months,
but I will have to wait and see.
Kelly :)

Im asking a dumb question here......

Where exactly are the SI injections placed?

I had one epidural steroid injection back in mid April at the bottom

of my spine and I'm getting another one next week to help the pain

going down my right leg from bulging disks.

Is this the same thing that you guys are treating?

Ahhh, it's on the cusp. I did not recall that. I do remember some
really small towns in Oklahoma, like Crescent and Tuttle. (Amazing the
things my mind holds on to after all these years ... and the things it
forgets entirely. LOL)

Faith, sorry to hear your mom's back in the hospital, but, hopefully,
it will knock the infection out quickly and she can get back on track.
Believe me, I've had some experience with infections and legs and
intravenous antibiotics, and sometimes the intravenous antibiotic is a
lot better than trying to heal an infection at home with some pills.)

My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your mom. Tell her we're all
pulling for her.
