i have heard of them being used right after the injury as a means of preventing swelling during the early hours of an sci.  swelling is a very definate cause of preventing blood flow to the injured area thus leaving it oxygen starved and nonfunctional.  they also supersaturate the chamber with oxygen to help feed the injured tissues.
