Hi, Dee! I also am 59 years old, soon to be 60 on Monday (June 2nd!). I need
to lose weight as well. I just joined the TOPS program on Friday but their
program basically lets you chose whatever diet plan you want. The group was
quite supportive. I've been researching which diet plan I want to go on to lose
my unwanted pounds. I was about to go on the Dr. Perricone program but truly
doubt if I could stick to it. I need something easier to handle. Somehow the
Special "K" program came to my mind, so here I am! I am at 159 lbs, but want to
be at 130 lbs. (my weight was usually 117, 120, but I was always cold. Feeling
that at 130 lbs, it will be good for me. I no longer have the desire to be 117
or 120) I have not been able to lose the added pounds in over a year. Several
years ago I couldn't even gain weight no matter what I ate or how much. But
then all of a sudden, I gained 35 lbs almost overnight when I had thyroid
problems. Going from a size 4-6 to a size 12-14 wasn't a pretty picture for me.
So...here I am. Wanting to really do something about this weight gain, and
looking at the Special 'k' diet. It looks simple enough. And I love the fact
that my dinner meal can be whatever I want. Wow..how great is that? I'll
continue to support you in your efforts if you'll support me. What do you say?

I remember from gym class and playing soccer that it's good to speed up like that, but then to slow down the same way so you bring your heart back down to a steady pace. Much like warming up before a work out and cooling off when your done! Hope that helped!   ~LIndsey

Hi Gail.
You could try the 4 Ds -- Drink water, (sip it slowly) Do something else, (to
take your mind off eating) Deep breathe, (take 2 or 3 deep breaths), Delay
(For a few minutes and the urge will pass), or if you like sewing, you could
take up patchwork or embroidery. It helps if you can keep your mind busy, then
you don't think about it so much. Good luck.

Hi, my name is Dee . I am 59 and wanting to lose weight for health reasons and I
wouldnt mind looking nicer in my clothes. I weight at the present time 186 and
my goal is 145. The Special K diet looks like a good jump start. I do well with
a structured diet. I have started exercising (on my third week) yahoo for me!
and I have been getting rid of emotional baggage that bogs me down. I need a
buddy to talk to daily, or weekly. I am an encourager by nature. If you want to
be my buddy just say Hi. Dee

2 things have been a lifesaver for me:
-After you eat dinner:
1) LEAVE THE KITCHEN IMMEDIATELY - DO NOT linger- you know what you'll find in
there- FOOD. Why tempt yourself??
2) Brush your teeth! You're way less likely to eat because you won't want to get
your teeth all dirty again!

-Christiana
p.s. Gum really helps me too.......Like Extra watermelon flavor- YUM (and good
for your teeth)

Hey girl-

One thing that's helped me is to "eat like a skinny girl." Let me explain. For
me, it's all in the mindset. Sometimes I'll have those cookies b/c I think "I'm
not giving up anything, I'm not where I want to be anyway"
BUT if I think "I'm skinny! I'm not about to ruin my figure! I won't touch
those!" then it's so much easier! Also, if you keep it up, you really will be in
that position and your desire to give in will decrease. Every time you say "NO,"
your willpower is strengthened. It's all about self-discipline! Let me know if
you need a buddy.

Hey Blah blah,

I'm not here to give marital advice or anything :) but your husband probably
just doesn't know how hard it is for you to be dieting. He doesn't understand
the difficulty of the sacrifices that you are making. Perhaps he would be more
supportive if you explained to him exactly what your definition of "supportive"
is. If your definition of a supportive husband is someone who will eat like you
do, or at least eat healthier, then tell him so. But I doubt he is just being
cruel, he most likely just doesn't understand. Let me know if I can help you out
or if you need a buddy!

Hi,
I don't know if I have much of value to add... but I am going to try. To all of
you who are "obese" (usually means 20 pounds or more overweight... and I am), I
suggest you use the wonderful forum presented by Special K people to express all
your frustrations and ideas... Sometimes the forum itself and the posts are
enough to keep you going on the "job" of losing weight. I am only 5.2 (and a
half... heh) but I weigh 168 lbs. And I am 66 so my metabolism is basically in
the toilet. But here's the good news. I was 179 lbs about 5 or 6 weeks ago. It's
slow, but it continues and IF I can keep going, I will be at a healthy weight in
about four months. That's a long time and only about 6 to 8 pounds a month
loss... but I am re-learning eating habits along the way. I don't know how
many of you have a Trader Joe's near; but one thing I have been using is a
pancake/cooking mix that has no wheat and no gluten and doesn't bloat me...
Wheat means danger to me. I have always been a bread lover. No more. I cook
several of the pancakes and have one or two at a time for breakfast with maybe
one egg and I do not use butter or syrup or jam. They are anathema to me. They
got me here. Just the grains (it's rice flour, arrowroot, and corn flour) and
protein... and water. Later I have a small to medium bowl of homemade chicken
soup (make once a week) that is only chicken and onion and potato... with a
spoonful of plain yogurt on top (big spoonful, it's healthy). Sometimes I have a
bowl of oatmeal (plain, from scratch... no sugar or honey or stuff). If I put
anything in the oatmeal or in a snack of plain yogurt, it is frozen blueberries
or raspberries... very healthy. I am eating to live and eating for health,
not for "treats"... However, I am not a puritan. If I have kept it to under 1000
calories for the day, I allow a small treat of dark chocolate or glass of wine.
Other foods I enjoy are snow peas (raw), carrots (raw), scallions (with my eggs
or soup), salmon (frozen), and an occasional quiche... 450 calories. I work
hard on portion control and force myself to wait an hour after eating to sip on
anything or touch anything except water. Maybe my methods won't help any of
you... and my loss of 11 pounds in about 6 weeks is not awesome... but for me it
is an ongoing lifestyle. I am grateful to Special K for this forum and try to
use a little cereal now and then; but wheat is a nemesis product for women who
bloat and have problems. So, though I offer my gratitude and buy their
products for others in the family, I cannot use them regularly if I am going to
continue to lose weight.
I wish all of you the best of luck... Oh, and for those who's husbands
"submarine" their efforts; do not eat with your family. Find another spot. I
cook for the family sometimes, but I don't eat it or, if I do, I eat only the
veggies and stuff that fits. No meal of mine is ever more than 500 cal MAX...
Most are under 300.
Good Luck
Jody

Hi, Well I have the same issues that you have both Hypo and highblood pressure.
I have 10 pounds to lose and boy it's tough. I would have your Dr recommend a
nutritionist and read up on hypo thyroid. As they say to eat complex carbs,
protien, veggies and fruit. I would love to meet someone that has followed
this diet and has lost when they have hypo. I'm just not sure if its th right
thing since we should have low GI/complex carbs. I guess worse case scenerio we
would gain more but could stop as soon as that happens. I was hopping since
Special K promotes this as a diet they would have nutirionist on the site that
may be able to share some success stories.

Hello! My name is Gail and I just turned 38. I live in Michigan and have 3
daughters, ages 6, 8 and 10. I seemed to gained some weight over the winter,
and the exercising tapered off because my girls seemed to always be sick or we
had a snow day - anyway, my goal is to lose 20 pounds. I want to do this for
two reasons: First, for myself, so I feel better about myself, and Second, so
my daughters have a good role model to look up to. I grew up in a family that
was always overweight, and I feel that it is almost inevitable that I end up
that way too, but I dont' want to, so I am going to do my best to get rid of the
extra weight. I am starting the challenge today!
