oh, I feel your pain! Social service/non-profits seem to thrive on
interactive learning and small group activities, and I just want to
slink out of the room...unfortunately, as a supervisor, I can't do so.
My work is very social as well, and I've had to set some very
explicit personal boundaries (evenings and weekends are mine; I don't
socialize with coworkers, period.) I need that time for extreme self-
care. Without it, I'm even less able to cope.
In terms of conversation starters, I usually ask people about their
position, their program, how long they've been with the agency, where
they worked before that, where they went to school, what their degree
was in, etc. I find that if I can keep them talking, eventually
there's usually some common point that we can discuss...not always.
Sometimes, it just sucks, and I can't wait to get back to my office.
