Ashley,
I am an amateur photographer and suffer from shyness,
so I know well how it can hold you back. My advice is
to learn your craft well enough so that *you* consider
yourself an expert. At the same time, make a study of
how pro photographers work with people as their
subjects (or in a crowded area). Then you can "act
the part" of the pro photographer ("fake it until you
make it"). You might also draw inspiration from
reading about a photographer such as Margaret
Bourke-White, who confessed to being shy except when
she had a camera in her hands. You have to let your
desire to obtain photos supercede your shyness.
Good luck!
