ONLINE MINDFULNESS BASED STRESS REDUCTION PROGRAM FOR SHYNESS AND
SOCIAL ANXIETY
Shyness and social anxiety may affect many areas of life. They may
limit social activity, employment opportunities, and one's ability
to enjoy a full life. Symptoms of shyness and social anxiety include:
* PHYSICAL: sweating, trembling, accelerated heart rate,
blushing, stomach cramps, dry mouth.
* COGNITIVE: obsessive thoughts about past social performance
and their future consequences, preoccupation and worry (e.g., worry
that anxiety symptoms will be noticed by others and will result in
being embarrassed or rejected).
* EMOTIONAL: anxiety, fear, distress, embarrassment (e.g., fear of
being evaluated, judged, or criticized by others; anxiety about
dating or other relationships).
* BEHAVIORAL: difficulty speaking in public (small or large
groups), inhibition, avoidance of social activities, nervous
behaviors during social interactions.
If you suffer from several of these symptoms, the practice of
Mindfulness Meditation might help you reduce them. Practitioners of
Mindfulness Meditation have reported:
* Reduction in stress and anxiety.
* Reduction in disturbing thoughts about the past and the future.
* Increased sense of calmness and equanimity.
* Increased self-acceptance and positive thinking.
Mindfulness Meditation will be taught through an online version of
the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program modeled after
Jon Kabat-Zinn's stress reduction program at the University of
Massachusetts. The course will be part of a study designed to
explore the practice of Mindfulness Meditation to alleviate the
symptoms of chronic shyness and social anxiety. Questions regarding
this research can be emailed to
