Subject: Re: [SheffieldHomeBirth] Have you had you first baby at home?
Hi Michelle
I had my first baby at home last November. I had a water birth and am really happy about how it turned out. I wouldn't say it was a perfect experience but the labour and birth were very straightforward and I think that being at home with just my husband and a wonderful midwife allowed me to stay as relaxed and focussed as possible and I think that gives you the best environment to let your body get on with it's amazing work. I have no regrets and would definitely go for a home birth again if I have another baby.
Anyway, I don't feel like I'm any sort of expert on the subject but she's welcome to give me a call.
Is there anybody on this list who has had their first baby at home? A lady has contacted me and she is planning to have her first baby at home and she would really like to talk to somebody. Please email me if you can.

Zachary was my first baby and I had him at home (back to back labour,
waterbirth, second degree tear, no drugs other than paracetamol and codeine...I
did the lot!)-if you want to pass on my details then feel free I am happy to
talk about my experience.

Hi,
I had my first baby at Jessops, but I recently had my second baby at home and
wish that I'd had my first baby at home as well.
I don't know what it was specifically that she wanted to talk about but I feel I
could give her a good idea of home birth verses hospital birth. I would also be
happy to talk to her about any aspect of the home birth. I had a water birth

If you think it might be helpful for her to have a chat with me then feel free

To coincide with Tommy’s Charity’s ‘Let’s Talk Baby’ month, The Osteopathic Practice in Broomhill is offering a free initial antenatal consultation and treatment throughout September*. This consultation will seek to identify and treat some of the common problems associated with pregnancy, including back ache and pain in the pelvic, rib and chest regions.
Claire Pryce from Tommy’s says "During Tommy’s Let’s Talk Baby Month (formerly known as Pregnancy Health Month) we hope to empower pregnant women by bringing the realities of pregnancy into the open, and making impartial, expert pregnancy health information available to all. We are pleased The Osteopathic Practice in Sheffield is supporting Tommy’s throughout Let’s Talk Baby Month. Being pregnant is one of the biggest changes the body goes through, bringing with it a wealth of new and sometimes unexpected experiences".
Osteopathy can help to provide relief from numerous pregnancy related aches and pains, as well as more specific conditions such as
Pelvic Girdle pain and carpal tunnel syndrome. It can also prove effective in offering relief from pregnancy related issues such as heartburn, breathing difficulties, swollen ankles and varicose veins.
Even for those enjoying a comfortable, straightforward pregnancy, an osteopathic treatment can assist preparation for labour by helping to ensure that the pelvis is working as effectively as possible.
The size of the pelvis increases by up to 30% during labour, but its expansion may be restricted if there are strains or tension in this area. By using very gentle techniques, the osteopath will be able to help release these strains, giving the best chance of an easy and uncomplicated labour.
*Whilst appointments are free, The Osteopathic Practice is asking all mums-to-be to make a minimum donation of £10 at the time of their treatment; every penny of which will be passed on to Tommy’s charity.
For more information and to book an appointment call The Osteopathic Practice on 0114 266 4786.

Midwives from Sheffield will be running a stall in Barkers Pool on Tuesday the 5th May in order to raise awareness of the fact that every minute somewhere in the world a woman dies because of complications in pregnancy and childbirth. Many of these deaths happen simply because women in many countries lack access to skilled birth attendants such as midwives, or basic medical care.
The event marks the International Day of the Midwife (IDM) on 5th May 2009, when midwives around the world will take action to highlight the knowledge and skills of midwives, and the contribution they make to the health of their nations. In the UK midwives will be highlighting the United Nations Millennium Development Goal 5 (MDG5), which aims to improve maternal health.
The goal, supported by the UK Government, is to reduce by 75% the number of women who die during pregnancy or childbirth, by 2015. There are two targets within MDG5: one to reduce maternal deaths and the other to provide universal access to reproductive health.
MDG 5 has made the least progress of all the goals since its inception in 2000, but the global voice calling for change is getting stronger. Maternal Health was on the G8 agenda for the first time ever in 2008 with many governments pledging funding for this issue. The challenge now is to make sure these pledges are fulfilled. International Day of the Midwife actions will highlight the need for midwives and celebrate their important role in improving maternal health.
IDM is organised by the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM), and is supported in the UK by the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) and the White Ribbon Alliance (WRA). The White Ribbon Alliance is currently running the Million Mums campaign, which is calling for a million Mums, Dads, Sons and Daughters to join www.millionmums.org
to say NO to the needless death if one woman every minute in pregnancy and childbirth. The midwives will be aiming to raise money for this campaign.
Midwives from the Sheffield branches of the Royal College of Midwives and the Association of Radical Midwives will be in Sheffield City Centre, at Barkers Pool (outside John Lewis) on Tuesday 5th May from 11am to 3pm with information on the issues, and collection boxes, and hope that if you are in town on that day you will drop by to give your support.
The Mama Pack is here to change the face of the natal pack!
In the UK almost every mother looks forward to her pack from the midwife and hospital. the excitement of opening the pack up and rooting through all the freebies inside is tangible in the ante-natal clinics!
But there are a growing number of expectant mothers who feel let down by the contents as they look through the plastic printed bag.
Disposable nappies, disposable chemical filled wipes, disposable breast pads IF you get any at all.. handfuls of leaflets seemingly encouraging you to have a hospital birth, formula feed and buy the most expensive buggy and feed your precious baby from hermetically sealed jars of food prepared by machines in factories!
The Mama Pack is here to change all that!
Each pack will contain various SAMPLE items not only promoting but also letting you feel and test sample products that are earth friendly, ethical, holistic, natural and geared towards encouraging parents to a more attached and relaxed method of parenting.
Independent Midwives, Breastfeeding counsellors, Doulas, family of Mums to be and Mums to be are just some of the people who purchase Mama packs!
They are a fantastic gift for any Mother to be, fabulous educational tool for anyone wanting to learn more about a more natural parenting and fantastic tool for advertising and promoting YOUR business!

Thanks for your support. Unfortunately we haven't had any bookings from Derby. Do you know if Derby City Hospital have an MSLC? If they do then you should really think about trying to get on it.
I still can't make it as its a friday, don't know why I wrote it down as Feburary, I would say its pregnancy hormones but I'm not pregnant. I would love to hear Dennis WLsh and was really excited when I heard he was going to be there, espically as he wrote a peiece about Hypnobirthing and how it helps in an article a few years ago, never mind. I left some flyers at Derby City Hospital a little while ago, I don't know what they did with them, probably stuck them in the bin like they do mine, I don't know if you ever heard anything from them. I'll go and put my head back in the sand know... Danielle

See attached Press Release / article about the incredible increase in home births as a result of some Trusts offering birthing pools when women book a home birth. Please forward this to any relevant publications or egroups, including MSLC groups.
26th Feb 2009
Dramatic Increase in Trusts Offering Birth Pools for Home Birth Use
A growing number of NHS Community Teams are introducing programmes that significantly reduce the historically high cost of a birthing pool to women planning a home birth - in some cases to zero!
The trailblazers over the last 2 years have included Community Teams from Royal Hallamshire (Sheffield), Newport Pagnell, Milton Keynes, Oaktree (Cornwall), Salisbury and St. Mary's (London). They have been driven by the will of key individuals to improve care and prepare for the implementation of the 2007 NICE guidelines on Intrapartum Care. One Trust set a goal of increasing its home birth rate and has doubled it in 12 months since they began offering a free birthing pool for women who booked home births.
Community Teams that have recently decided to offer similar programmes include Arrowe Park (Wirral), St. Richard's (Chichester) and Perth Royal The programmes are delivered using birth pool in a box inflatable pools from The Good Birth Company.
About The Good Birth Company
The Good Birth Company's mission is to make use of water for labour and birth accessible to all women for whom it is clinically appropriate. With a range of practical solutions for individuals and NHS Trusts, The Good Birth Company is making it possible for many more women to enjoy the benefits of water birth.

Danielle
