Dramatic Increase in Trusts Offering Birth Pools for Home Birth Use
A growing number of NHS Community Teams are introducing programmes that
significantly reduce the historically high cost of a birthing pool to women
planning a home birth - in some cases to zero!
The trailblazers over the last 2 years have included Community Teams from
Royal Hallamshire (Sheffield), Newport Pagnell, Milton Keynes, Oaktree
(Cornwall), Salisbury and St. Mary's (London). They have been driven by the
will of key individuals to improve care and prepare for the implementation
of the 2007 NICE guidelines on Intrapartum Care. One Trust set a goal of
increasing its home birth rate and has doubled it in 12 months since they
began offering a free birthing pool for women who booked home births.
Community Teams that have recently decided to offer similar programmes
include Arrowe Park (Wirral), St. Richard's (Chichester) and Perth Royal
The programmes are delivered using birth pool in a box inflatable pools from
The Good Birth Company.
