The Osteopathic Practice have just launched the “Third trimester check.” During January and February 2009 they are offering a free initial consultation and osteopathic treatment as appropriate, for mums-to-be who are in their third trimester.
Even if you’re enjoying a comfortable, straightforward pregnancy, a third trimester check can offer a number of benefits, by helping your body to adapt to the ongoing changes that are taking place, and preparing for some of the demands of labour.
As you and your baby begin to grow more rapidly, there will be more of a change in your centre of gravity, and the shape of your spine. Unsurprisingly, it is often at this stage that mums become less comfortable than they have been until now, and gentle osteopathic treatment can help to prevent discomfort as you both grow outwards.
Osteopathy can also provide an opportunity to help reduce the physical effects of any emotional stress or tension that you may be experiencing – by remaining relaxed and calm; there is a beneficial effect for your baby as well as yourself.
Your osteopath will also be able to fine tune the way that your pelvis works in preparation for labour itself. During labour, your pelvis expands by up to 30% to allow your baby through. If there are any long standing stresses or strains in this area, your pelvis may not be able to expand so efficiently, so by releasing them now, you will be more likely to experience an uncomplicated delivery.
You may also like to think about acupuncture as part of your preparation for labour. In particular, it can be very helpful if your baby is breech, or you have gone over your due date and would like to help get labour started.
