We are planning to work with a producer to bring about a terrestrial
channel home birth programme.
It is crucial for this that we are able to have a series of home
births on film. The producer is herself someone (NCT member) who has
had a homebirth so is very sensitive to the issues.
Our charity can help by finding parents to be who might be willing to
feature.
I n order to draw in a major broadcaster the producer needs to
present
the case through a number of engaging case studies. They are seeking
women who will allow themselves to be followed them through their
pregnancy journey, the birth and the baby joy beyond.
We are hoping to portray a wide spectrum of home birth experiences
from differing ethnic backgrounds, very young women through to older
mothers, low income families through to the high earners. We are
not looking for yoga teachers or hippy chick homebirth mums, we are
interested in ordinary women who may have unusual stories or
backgrounds who would be happy to talk to us.
This is because home birth is often believed to be an odd or mad
thing
to do so we need to feature the very main stream and otherwise
apparently conformist woman in large part.
We are interested in a wide range of homebirth experiences, but have
made some suggestions as to possible types of woman:
Office based Senior Executive - first time mother Having it all
mother
- works and has help with existing children, au pair or nanny
Ordinary
mother, might live on modern estate, works part time in office, reads
Grazia.
Birth shock mother - first hospital labour was very traumatic -
homebirth will help with healing process.
Young mother - teenage or early 20s - possibly she is stepping
outside her cultural norms Country based Mother with existing big
family - maybe farmers wife Mother who wants to involve the rest of
family in the birth Fighting for an NHS homebirth mother
Women need to be happy to talk and ideally have engaging characters.
In the early stage of research the producer needs to speak with them
about their motivation for homebirth. If they were interested in
participating in the programme the filmmaker would spend a lot of
time
with them prior to the day of birth in order to build up a trusting
relationship. At all times they promise they would act respectfully
in accordance with their wishes.
The producer is .
