Fabulous Reflexology and Amazing Acupuncture! Choices May was fabulous reflexology with Midwife Charlotte Rhodes giving us a talk and demonstration about reflexology and its uses in pregnancy, childbirth and beyond. Charlotte is an excellent and enthusiastic speaker (in case anyone is interested!) and I fully understood how reflexology works for the first time. She also did a demonstration treatment on one of our number who visibly relaxed and responded to the treatment. At the end of the evening we had all become enthusiastic witnesses to the benefits of this practice. Look out for Charlotte as she will be invited back – don’t miss her. In the meantime you can contact her at freedom4u33@... So after fabulous reflexology, now Amazing Acupunture! Simon Ward, a Choices Dad is returning to share some down-to-earth knowledge and practice of what acupuncture can do for you during pregnancy, through labour and after the birth. Come and learn about this ancient medical tradition and its modern practice – and its very common sense advice to Mums. I had a much better postnatal period after the birth of Tom following from such a talk. This is as a must for any mother or midwife. More Ina May's Birth Stats "At the Farm an intentional community in Summertown, Tennesse, [Ina May] Gaskin created a midwifery education programme at a time when no formally recognised training programs gave hands-on experience in the home setting. The birth statistics for The Farm are outstanding. From 1970-2000, its cesarean rate was just 1.4%. Its induction rate was 5.1%. The infant loss rate has been less than 0.5%, and it has had no maternal deaths in 30 years. In addition the midwves at the The Farm have delivered 15 sets of twins, all born vaginally, and they routinely deliver breech babies vaginally as well."
Exert from Mothering magazine, published in the USA in Aug 2004. Cf www.mothering.com
Ed: These stats are in striking contrast to the stats for the rest of the USA quoted in the Business of being Born - which despite high use of medical technology are the second worst for maternal and infant mortatliy across the developed world. These stats raise fundemental questions about the kind of maternity care women should receive to get the good birth we all want.
More Breastfeeding Awareness Week in Bradford – or Three Mums and a Baby.
Three Bradford Mums did not want to let breastfeeding Awareness Week go unmarked in the city this year. And so they brainstormed a few ideas, harried a few people for freebies and pulled of this stunt! http://www.thetelegraphandargus.co.uk/search/display.var.2284513.0.doing_the ir_breast_to_welcome_mums.php . Jo Thompson and the other peer supporters on the day (Kirsty, Anna and Kajsa) plus Bosom Buddies of Keighley and Shipley ventured into Centenary Square and the wider city to raise awareness of breastfeeding in Bradford.Kajsa says: Ruth, the event was a great success today! We are now in plans to share out funding to us peers supporter for expenses, also to get together in next couple of weeks to organise a district-wide rota. We are now being asked for our input! We met some lovely women today in Centenary Square, shared out various freebies (including balloons for the kids!) dropped off some Welcome Here sign-ups, also accosted a few people in town with freebies and talk of NBAW!Just shows that even a small contribution can have an effect. Thanks to Ruth Weston for the ideas, Veronika Robinson for the spur and to Jo for making it happen! Thanks also to Sam Britton for providing us some freebies to give away - made us feel a bit more credible! Jo managed to get some cut price helium for the balloons we were donated at the Ikea Leeds ‘big breastfeed’ event earlier in the week (from the local florists). Hopefully now we will be able to organise a hospital rota for peer supporters, get expenses paid and also make it into antenatal clinics and schools, with the support from Julie and the (alongside) Homestart Scheme. All ideas are welcome for progress. . More The Business of Being Born – in Blackburn with Denis Walsh You are all invited to the screening of The Business of being Born, co-hosted by Bolton and NW Manchester NCT and Princess Anne Maternity Unit at Bolton Hospital.
It's going to be held on the Wednesday June 11th 7-9.30pm at the Lecture Hall in the Education Centre at Bolton Hospital.
We are really excited that Denis Walsh (Midwife and Reader in Normal Birth at UCLAN) has agreed to attend also for a post-film discussion. Attendance is absolutely FREE and refreshments will be available.Ed. More In case you thought the Nestle Boycott had faded... http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2007/may/15/medicineandhealth.lifeandhealth
Short exert: “No one argues that Nestlé is the only company to have been involved in less-than-perfect practices - Ibfan and, in the UK, the campaigning group Baby Milk Action, say they target the company because they claim it has violated the code more than any other single company worldwide, and also that - as a market leader - it should be setting an example.
Nestlé is tight-lipped about the effect of the boycott on its sales or public image. But, 30 years on, feelings continue to run high. This week, users of a UK parenting website, Netmums, took its founders to task after the site agreed a sponsorship deal with Nestlé, and on Saturday demonstrators will gather outside the company's HQ for a show of strength in favour of a cause that refuses to go away.”
