The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Office of E-Health
Standards and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)
Computer Security Division are holding a joint workshop on HIPAA
Security Rule Implementation and Assurance.

The full day event is scheduled for January 16, 2008 at the NIST Red
Auditorium in Gaithersburg with key note speaker Mr. Anthony Trenkle,
Director of the Office of E-Health Standards and Services, CMS.

We invite you to mention this conference to your membership and to
attend the workshop itself.

The one-day event is intended to discuss challenges, tips, techniques
and issues surrounding implementing, adhering to and auditing HIPAA
Security Rule requirements. The intended audience comprises
professionals spanning both the health care and information technology
fields, including HIPAA security rule implementers, covered-entity
privacy officers, security officers, compliance officers, and audit
staff.

The agenda includes:
þ A briefing from CMS and the Office of E-Health Standards and
Services on reactive and proactive HIPAA security assessments,
þ Topics from NIST security specialists on technical
implementations, automation of compliance and the latest deployed
and upcoming technologies,
þ Threat briefings from the Department of Homeland Security,
þ Real implementation issues and success from the Workgroup for
Electronic Data Interchange (WED), the American Medical
Association (AMA), BlueCross BlueShield California (BCBSC),
Medical Group Management Association (MGMA), and Americas Health
Insurance Plans (AHIP),
þ Impacts of standards and current federal initiative will be
presented from HHS Office of the National Coordinator (ONC), the
American Health Information Community (AHIC), the Health
Information Standards Panel (HITSP) and the Certification
Committee for HealthIT CCHIT).
