Regrettably, the message below is over-simplified. Only providers who are HIPAA covered entities are required by law to obtain an NPI. {45 CFR 162.402 and 45 CFR 162.410 (a)} Others may do so at their discretion or in response to business incentives {45 CFR 162.410 (b)}; unless the provider provides only "atypical services" -- in which case he/she/it is not eligible to obtain an NPI at all {45 CFR 162.402}.
