Subject: Part 2-HIPAA Comparison Educational Document
Good afternoon,
I am pleased to forward a HIPAA educational document that compares the
Confidentiality of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Patient Records regulation (42 CFR
Part 2) with the HIPAA Privacy Rule (45 CFR Parts 160 and 164). This
document has been cleared by the U.S. Department of Health and Human
Services and will be posted to SAMHSA HIPAA website (www.hipaa.samhsa.gov)
next week.
The "Comparison" is a summary document that highlights the most significant
areas in which the two regulations interact with each other. The document
is targeted to programs that already comply with the "Part 2" regulations
and require direction on how to integrate HIPAA Privacy Rule into their
business and clinical processes.
Now that I have you here .... SAMHSA has updated the HIPAA website to make
it more user friendly. New additions include tapes of audioconferences that
on the HIPAA Electronic Transactions standard and the HIPAA Security Rule;
the tape on the Privacy Rule will be along within the next month or so).
The searchable database is in the process of being updated. You will hear
from me when that is completed.
Please distribute this document widely. I think you will find it extremely
useful. As always, I welcome any comments or questions you may have. My
contact information is below. You may also contact Dr. Kirk James
(kjames@...), CSAT's point person for the Part 2 regulations.
Have a nice and safe holiday weekend!
