CMS is working on contracting an "Enumerator" to operate their already
planned software and processes for entering providers and their new
National Provider Identifiers (NPI's) into a National Provider System.
This National Provider System will actually be a joint system with a
parallel endeavor to assign National Plan Identifiers (NPlanID's) when
that HIPAA regulation goes into effect. This joint system is presently
known as the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES).
The very long link below points to a *draft* statement of work (SOW) for
the NPPES Enumerator. The SOW is presently available for comment.
Whether you comment or not, for those with the inclination, the contents
of the draft SOW give a pretty good indication of how the enumeration
process is likely to work, forms to be completed, and so forth.
