In an effort to continue the ongoing efforts to educate the research
community about the Privacy Rule, the National Institutes of Health
(NIH) is holding a one-day conference "Research and the HIPAA Privacy
Rule: One Year Into Privacy Rule Implementation." The conference will
take place at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade
Center in Washington, DC, on May 26, 2004.
This meeting will look into issues affected by the implementation of
the HIPAA Privacy Rule, such as clinical research, repositories and
databases, health services research, mental health research, public
health activities, and the use or disclosure of personal health
information through an authorization, waiver, or limited data set,
among others. Along with representation from NIH, speakers will
represent the Department of Health and Human Services, the Office for
Civil Rights, the Office for Human Research Protections, the U.S.
Food and Drug Administration, the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the
Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and the Substance Abuse
and Mental Health Services Administration. There are no fees to
attend this meeting, but participants must pre-register and are
responsible for all travel and lodging costs.
