The attached PowerPoint was prepared by Patricia Peyton, Office of HIPAA Standards, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid, for the X12 Trimester Meeting in Seattle, WA last week. The PowerPoint is a great introduction and overview of the new NPI final rule.
Attachments are not provided in the "digest mode" If digest mode is your preference of receiving postings from ShareHIPAA Yahoo! group, you will need to access the PowerPoint from the Files section of ShareHIPAA. If your preference for receiving postings from ShareHIPAA Yahoo! group is individual email, the attachments are included with postings. If you delete the presentation, but in the future desire to review it, you can go to the Files section. All attachments posted to ShareHIPAA are uploaded to the Files section, and thus, a nice HIPAA Reference Library has evolved. To access the Files section of ShareHIPAA Yahoo! group, go to the ShareHIPAA Yahoo! group home page at
http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/ShareHIPAA , sign in with your Yahoo! ID and password, and then select "Files" from the left column. Files are in alphabetical order. The NPI PowerPoint looks like this in the Files Section:
NPI Overview-X12Trimester.ppt
Msg #158
Feel free to look through the Files Section for other HIPAA related information. If you see "Msg" followed by a number in the description of the file, this indicates that the file was originally posted to ShareHIPAA Yahoo! group as an attachment. If you want to learn more about the file you can select "Messages" from the left column while in the Files section, and then enter the number in the "Msg" box, and Yahoo! will take you to the posting that had that file as an attachment. Since the NPI Overview PowerPoint is an attachment to the 158th message posted to ShareHIPAA Yahoo! group, if you enter 158 in the "Msg" box it will take you to this message.
Regards,
ShareHIPAA

"Those slides do not clearly indicate that "Provider taxonomy code" is a "repeating" data element in the National Provider System. And I'm not sure I specifically made that point in my presentation.
This information, however, is clear in the Final Rule on page 3459. The Final Rule shows, in the Data Element Table on that page, that "Provider taxonomy code" is a repeating data element (note "RPT" in
Data Status column). A repeating data element can accommodate more than one separate entry, with each entry being required to meet any edits for the data element. "
