Here is the information from the LCCC website along with the web address.  The following NIMS classes are scheduled within the county.  There is a September 30 deadline on getting this training.  As there is a great deal going on in the coming weeks (SSES drill, convention, holiday) please try to register for one of these classes.

Thanks,

Matz

Disaster News

FEMA AND PEMA OPEN FIVE DISASTER RECOVERY CENTERS

DRCs to Open In Schuylkill, Susquehanna, Wyoming, Monroe and Wayne Counties on July 10

HARRISBURG – To help meet the ongoing needs of Pennsylvania’s recent severe storms and flooding victims, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Pennsylvania’s Emergency Management Agency (PEMA) are opening five Disaster Recovery Centers (DRC) on July 10.  The centers provide a single location where people are able to talk face-to-face with recovery specialists.

Before visiting a DRC, you should begin the application process by calling FEMA’s toll-free number,

1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 1-800-462-7585 for the hearing and speech impaired.  Both numbers are available from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week until further notice. Multilingual operators are also available to answer your call. Those with Internet access can register online at www.fema.gov.

Representatives from local, state and federal agencies, and some private-sector organizations will staff the following joint DRCs:

Schuylkill County

Technology Center

South Campus I.U. 29

17 Maple Avenue

Mar Lin 17951

Susquehanna County

Blue Ridge School

SR 1039

AKA School Road

New Milford 18834

Wyoming County

Evans Falls Elementary

2055 SR 29S

Tunkhannock

18657

Monroe County

JT Lambert  Elementary School Gymnasium

2000 Milford Road

East Stroudsburg 18301

Wayne County

7/10 and 7/11 only

Northern Wayne Fire Company

1665 Crosstown Highway

Lakewood

**MOBILE DRC**

All centers will open Monday, July 10 at 1 p.m.

Regular hours thereafter:

10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Friday

10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays

All, except Wayne County, will close on Sundays

FEMA/PEMA DRCs TO OPEN / Page 2

PLEASE NOTE: The Wayne County DRC is a MOBILE DRC. It will be traveling around the Wayne county area, visiting Equinunk, Waymart, Hawley and Honesdale starting July 12.

“At this time in the recovery process, people are beginning to think about putting their lives back together,” James R. Joseph, Commonwealth Coordinating Officer, said.  “Right now people want information about the status of their applications for assistance or help filling out their disaster loan application.  They want to know what their options for rebuilding are, so they don’t have to face the same disaster problems when the flooding happens again.”

Some of the things people can accomplish at the centers include:

·         Inquiring about the status of the application they have already made by phone;

·         Referrals for temporary rental assistance resources;

·         Assistance completing U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) low-interest loan applications for homeowners, renters or business owners;

·         Receive information about Disaster Unemployment Assistance;

·         Receive state and federal disaster tax assistance;

·         Receive disaster legal assistance from the State Bar Association;

·         Referrals to local agencies that provide crisis counseling;

·         Receive information about the Individual and Family Grant Program;

·         Examining options for repairing or rebuilding in floodplains;

·         Learn cost effective measures to reduce the impact of future flooding or disaster losses;

·         Receive referrals to American Red Cross and other voluntary organizations to help with

immediate unmet needs.

“Visiting a DRC is not mandatory but is an opportunity for people to have face-to-face contact with agency representatives,” said Federal Coordinating Officer Tom Davies.  “Visitors can learn what their options are for repairing or rebuilding and learn what they can do to avoid future damages from severe storms and flooding so they don’t have to face the same problems again.”

The counties designated to receive individual assistance are: Bradford, Berks, Bucks, Chester, Columbia, Dauphin, Franklin, Lackawanna, Lancaster, Lebanon, Luzerne, Monroe, Montgomery, Montour, Northampton, Northumberland, Pike, Schuylkill, Susquehanna, Wayne and Wyoming.

Individuals who are unable to visit the centers and have questions about disaster assistance, rebuilding or preventive measures to avoid future damages are urged to call the same numbers and select the option for “General Information” or go online to www.fema.gov where valuable recovery information can also be found.

FEMA manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003.

Hi Everyone. Just wanted to state that I lost my foster dog to the
loss of his the use of his back legs. I tried to keep him as long as I
could since Dec 2005, and he just had to much going on with his spine.
I have two beautiful dogs, one is the sister to the dog I had to put
down. I looked at them when I got home from putting Timber down, and I
lost it so bad. I just had to hug my two guys. I guess we just never
know when it is going to happen to us in our homes like this. Thanks
for letting me talk. I know that the messages posted here are for
information. I just had to ven.

Hi, I too am interested in the training, unfortunately I could not make
the previously scheduled date. Hopefully, when it is rescheduled I
will be able to attend. Thank you, Dana Smith-Mansell

Peggy,

I am interested in attending this class in the future. My schedule is very full
until May 20 and it will be difficult to attend classes until after that date.
During the winter bad weather is also a concern.

Please pass the word about the Schuylkill CART and upcoming training.  Training on January 7, 2006 at the Ag Center on the Gordon Nagle Trail in Pottsville.  We will be doing an Introduction to Incident Command I-100.  This is one of the concepts that all of the CART members will have to understand.   Please e-mail jmatz@... if you are planning to attend.  The class will be conducted through Lehigh Carbon Community College with a certificate issued; therefore, the minimum class size is 15.   I am not sure when the class will be listed on the LCCC.edu non-credit section of the website.  Please check often over the next week to see if it is added to the site. If you have any questions, please email me.

Hello everyone.  I was just wandering around the FEMA training site again today and wanted to remind you all of the variety of great online courses available there.

For example:

IS-700—NIMS

ICS-100

15-5.A An introduction to hazardous materials

15-7 Citizens Guide to Disaster Assistance

15-10 Animals in Disasters Module A

15-11 Animals in Disasters Module B

15-111 Livestock in Disasters

15-244 Developing and Managing Volunteers

There is also information about live courses at various sites.  One that at least one person from each group should probably try to take is the Basic Public Information Officer (PIO) course (class G290) if you can find a reasonable location that it is being held.

The website is http://training.fema.gov/EMIWeb

Let me know if you have any questions.

All those interested in the Schuylkill County Animal Response Team.  We have started a new email group to assist us all in transferring important information about the CART.   This will probably become our method of choice for information exchange and posting meeting and training notices, etc.   In order to take part in this, you must register.  You can do this by sending an email to:  SchuylkillCART-subscribe@yahoogroups.com  After doing this, you will receive a confirmation email with a link to join.  Please help us in getting this group moving.  The minutes from the most recent sterring committee meeting are also posted at this link.  If you have any questions or difficulties, please contact me by email.  There is also a calendar function that we will use to post training and meeting dates.

Thanks,

Matz
