Subject: Rules of the Road - Ch. 17

Chapter 17: The role of emergency medicine (EM) clerkship

1) How many?

-Two clerkships are usually sufficient.
-This will provide enough contacts for the letters you need.
-Faculty who participate in residency selections typically know each other.

2) When?

-Some schools require EM during a 3rd year rotation. For those that don't,
you must schedule your 4th year EM rotation very early in the 4th year!
-Decide where to do your rotations as early as the middle of 3rd year.

3) Where?

-If your school has an EM residency, it is advised that you do a rotation
there first.
-For "away" EM rotations, gather specific information from the 4th years
that just went through the process. You can also ask your school for
contact information for graduates who have gone on to EM residencies.
Definitely don't forget about asking EM faculty at your school directly.

4) How do I set up an "away" rotation?

-Contact the Graduate Medical Education office at the hospital where you
want to go, and inquire if there are any available rotations in EM.

5) What if the Graduate Medical Education office says that there are no
available spots, but I really want to rotate at this specific hospital?

-Contact the EM department secretary directly and verify the name and email
of the medical student coordinator.
-In the email, be sure to include that you are interested in doing a
residency in EM and that you would like the opportunity to learn more about
their department specifically. Also, include dates that you are available.
-Another option is to ask your EM faculty advisor to email the clerkship
coordinator or program director.

6) Once I receive permission, what's next?

-Do the necessary paperwork.
-Some programs require transcripts.
-Process is institution dependent.
