N.J. December 5 & 6 2009

REMINDER - There is still a few slots open for qualified teams.

New Jersey Task Force 1 will host a Type II Canine Readiness, a Type II Disaster
Recovery, and a Type I Disaster Readiness Canine Evaluations in Lakehurst, N.J.
on December 5 & 6, 2009.

The following logistical information is supplied to assist in your planning to
send candidates from your Task Force. There will be no application fee to
participate in this evaluation. Task Forces who send participants will be
responsible for supporting their member's travel, lodging and per diem expenses.

The Type II Evaluations are open to State US&R canine teams that have completed
a Task Force sponsored pre-test assessment. It is also open to canine teams who
have passed all elements except the rubble pile of a previous Evaluation within
the past 6 months, and wish to retest the rubble only. Those wishing to do so
may have only failed the rubble portion once previously. Otherwise they must
re-take the entire evaluation.

The Type I Evaluation is open to State US&R canine teams that have completed a
Type II Evaluation and are currently certified. Applications may be submitted
from Teams taking the Type II on 12/5, however, priority shall be given to Teams
already certified.

There will be Shadow Evaluator opportunities available for those qualified.

To receive an application for this evaluation, either as a Testing Team, or
Shadow Evaluator, please go www.SUSAR.org, in the Resources section. The
requirements and forms are located in the Canine Evaluation documents. Members
accepted to test, or shadow will be notified of acceptance.

Please mail the application to:

is Government Rate (with TF ID) per night plus tax, and the rooms have been
reserved under the name NEW JERSEY TASK FORCE 1. Please request this group rate
at the beginning of the conversation. Candidates are expected to contact the

Candidates are expected to provide their own personal protective equipment
appropriate for rubble pile entry. Teams without such equipment will not be
allowed to participate in the evaluation. Portable kennels can be provided upon
request.

Good Morning Everyone!

I was wondering if anyone has a uniform policy? I'm looking for a couple of
things . . .

1. What is your Policy for wearing your US&R uniform of duty, specifically the
T-Shirts?
2. What is your policy on issuing of equipment, maintenance, accountability,
etc.

Anything is appreciated, I'm writing a policy for AL-TF1 because of the cost of
equipment and reduction in funds . . . I'm sure all of you can relate to this
problem.

Thanks,

I have looked in the FEMA manuel and I know that i am not reading it correctly but in order to get your K9 Cert for disaster work do you need to have or be cert as operational level in the tech rescue specialties. If not what are the prerequisites before taking the K9 test? thank you for all the answers I get.

If the Guides are getting to be too big ~ what about writing an Application for
the iPhone / Blackberry? 92% of us carry that type of technology into the field,
why not have the information digitized so that it could be pulled up anywhere?
Thus allowing the user the freedom to choose the part of the AP pertinent to
their situation.

Hi Folks,
If you own or use a Delsar Life Detector, Searchcam 2000, Recon or Mongoose we'd
like your opinion - if you don't own any of the above gear - ignore this
message.

We are in the process of updating our Field Orientation Guides and wanted to
know if these guides should/need to include the FEMA Technical Search Specialist
Practices and Procedures. Our current guide includes:
a. Equipment Manual for the Searchtic, Delsar Life Detector, Searchcam 2000,
Recon, Breaching System and Mongoose
b. FEMA Technical Search Specialist Practices and Procedures
c. Void Orientation Guides

We're trying to determine - what's relevant and what's not. These guides are
starting to get really big and heavy and we're not sure what information you,
SUSAR find important.

Our current thinking is to provide the manual and blank VOID orientation guides.

What do you need and what's relevant to you?
If you could be so kind as to send me an email and let me know i would really
appreciate it.

Cheers,
Julie

Also on the website (emacweb.org) are model disaster mission ready packages.
Click on the "mutual aid resources" at the top and then click on "Mission Ready
Packages" in the drop down menu. Look at items 41 and 42 from the model
disaster packages for search and rescue topics. In addition, there will be a
presentation on this at the SUSAR meeting in November.

Often we find ourselves looking for contact information for other SUSAR Teams.

Whether it's a Task Force Leader trying to contact another TFL, or a Rescue
Manager trying to network with another SUSAR Teams Rescue Manager, it can be
difficult.

I would like for us to create a SUSAR Resource database to help us network with
one another. Team address, Leadership contacts, phone and fax numbers, Manager
and Component contacts information would all be included.

I've posted a Resource Information document in the Files Section.

I am asking that a representitive for each Team fill out as much information as
possible and e-mail it back to me as soon as possible. If your state has more
than 1 Team, please fill out a seperate form for each Team.

I will assemble a folder for each Team at the annual Meeting that includes all
forms returned prior to the Meeting. I will bring blank forms for any Team not
returning a completed form by the Meeting.

Once the information is collected, we will restrict access to the documents to
SUSAR members.

Thank You

Randy,
Just a couple of notes for you:

We are currently carrying the BLACKHAWK Backpack Entry Kit.  We are carrying the kit that is equipped with the short Halligan, the mid-size bolt cutters, and the maul.  It is highly effective for door and window breaches - and I have to admit that I was really impressed with their bolt cutters.  This is a great set of tools - and I was thinking that same thing that you are thinking - would be a great set for the initial SAR team going in for recon work, etc.  Our guys do not complain about the weight either.  I can tell you also that you should look at their collapsible ladder - this thing fits in a day pack and is a pretty sturdy piece of equipment - would be good for the same kinds of things...

I have carried a lot of different sets of web gear, MOLLE systems, experimental load bearing vests and harness systems in the last 21 years of service and for the money, you can't go wrong with the GEAR 911 SPECIALTIES products -  www.gear911.com.  This is the gear that we are going to go with at MTFD TRT next year; we can put a whole squad in gear for $800.

You can pick up their SAR Web Gear for $55.00 and the detachable day pack for another $35.00 - for less than $100 per rescuer, you can outfit them with a good initial deployment / 24 hour bag.  I carried mine in Chapman for 12 hours and it was perfect.  Plenty of pouches for water bottles and a great fanny pack that is just the right size.  Attachable pockets are available for flagging tape, radios, etc. - all at very reasonable prices.

I know that a lot of folks are wearing the INFINITY Gear vest and there are a ton of other great sets of gear on the market now - all of it is good gear and all is very much personal preference.  For $100, you can buy a set and give it a try.  I actually have 2 sets - 1 for SAR and another for Wildland Fire...its worth it.  They also make a great copy of the FSS Red Bag - a great 72 hour bag.  They are very affordable and have some really good medical bags, etc.

Again, just my opinion.

Anyone have any suggestions on backpack style forcible entry kits such as the Blackhawk Backpack Entry Kit. We're looking for something lightweight and portable that can be carried by a member of a search squad.

Also looking for suggestions/ feedback on backpack vests for smaller equipment such as GPS, radio, notepads, marking equipment, etc.

Thanks,
