RE: [SUSAR] Jim Segerstrom

Jim unfortunately passed away this morning at 0844 pst.  His family was in attendance and expressed their sincere appreciation for all of the support.  They are working to plan a memorial in a few weeks that will allow people to plan travel.  More as it is available.

Subject: [SUSAR] Jim Segerstrom

You may or may not already know about the situation with Jim Segerstrom, which has been documented over the weekend on the Swiftwater Rescue e-group.  I have some of the info as follows.  Jim was of great help to the US&R side of things as well; he and I have been communicating over the last six months regarding swiftwater/flood resource development for US&R teams, and my paper on US&R resource typing that I just finished last Monday.  In fact, I was preparing to send him the information on the paper when I got this news.  Please keep Jim and his family in your prayers.

Paraphrased from Nancy Riggs' post on the sh20 e-group:

As most of you know, Jim Segerstrom suffered a "massive stroke" a couple of days ago.  He was airlifted to the San Francisco Medical Center where he was in the Neuro ICU until it was determined that nothing else could be done for him medically.  He has evidently sustained severe brain injury and although he is breathing on his own (it is "labored breathing," according to those who are at his side), he is not expected to survive for any length of time.

Jim's brother is a medical doctor and I am sure that he and other family members have made certain that the quality of medical care has been at its highest. This is a devastating event for Jim's family, as well as for the swiftwater and SAR communities.

Here's where Jim and his family are:

Jim is in 14-Long
