MESSAGE FOR STFM GROUP MEMBERS:
STFM Group Members - it's time to sign-up and show your support for
STFM and it's meeting next month in San Francisco!
39th STFM Annual Spring Conference
"Searching for Solutions: Realizing Our Vision, Renewing Ourselves,
and Supporting It All"
April 26-30, 2006
Hyatt Regency San Francisco ~ San Francisco, CA
You are invited to join me and our colleagues at the STFM Annual
Spring Conference, April 26-30 in San Francisco as we gather to
celebrate our ongoing mission of faculty development, our commitment
to the Future of Family Medicine project, and the families and
communities we serve! This is a one-of-a-kind meeting for all faculty
involved in family medicine education.
With the decline in interest in family medicine in recent years, and
the recent cuts with Title VII and HRSA, it's even more critical that
we look for ways to communicate to students, residents, and staff, the
value of the family medicine specialty...the best way to discover new
ways to do that is to network with colleagues! The STFM Annual Spring
Conference typically draws nearly 1,000 family medicine educators from
across the country. One of the strengths of this conference is the
networking time built into the scheduling as well as the willingness
of participants to share ideas with each other. This really is a
great opportunity for building new partnerships and searching for
solutions to realize our vision!
As leaders in family medicine faculty development, this conference
needs your support.by attending the meeting, and inviting your
colleagues to attend. I look forward to seeing you next month in San
Francisco!

Preconference Workshops: Wednesday, April 26
STFM Faculty Development Workshop Series - Workshop II: Research
Skills, Getting Started with the Basics This workshop orients novice
faculty researchers to the basics of educational and clinical research
design, planning, implementation, and communication. Participants have
an opportunity to refine a research question, determine the research
design most appropriate for this specific question, ask questions of
experienced researchers, and share ideas for future research.
STFM Faculty Development Workshop Series VI: Executive Leadership
Development for Academic Family Medicine: Academic family medicine
represents both a national resource and sacred public trust. The
challenge of preserving and advancing family medicine has never been
greater, which means that leaders in family medicine are being tested
like never before. In response to these demanding times STFM is
offering a newly-developed preconference for mid-level and senior
level faculty who are seeking to significantly strengthen their
leadership skills.
STFM Group on Women in Family Medicine Network: Celebrating Women in
Family Medicine - Women bring unique perspectives to the practice of
family medicine, as well as facing unique challenges. This workshop
will provide an opportunity to discuss issues of interest to female
physicians and to encourage career development and leadership.
Presenters will use large and small group sessions to review the
future of women in family medicine. Issues such as letters of
recommendation and mentoring female colleagues will be included. The
preconference will also include social/networking time.
Health Literacy: American Medical Association Train-the-Trainer
Program: A large proportion of American adults struggle with limited
literacy skills, which affect their ability to fully function in the
healthcare setting. Based on the AMA Foundation's Health Literacy
Train-the-Trainer model, participants will be trained to implement
sound principles of health literacy into their communications with
their patients. Every participant will receive the AMA Foundation's
Health Literacy kit, Health Literacy: Help Your Patients Understand
(video, CD rom, manual).
Procedural Training in Family Medicine Residency : This preconference
workshop focuses on training residents to perform procedures.
Facilitators will provide reasons for teaching and practicing
procedures in residencies and present a model for funding these
activities. Participants will receive a sample procedures curriculum
with supporting materials, share strategies for credentialing
residents, review RRC requirements for procedures, and discuss ways to
assess procedural competencies. Small group and panel discussions
will help attendees define ways to enhance the teaching of procedures
in their programs.
A FEW WORKSHOPS RELATED TO SPIRITUALITY
Thursday, April 27, 2006 5:15 PM
RP26 Family Physicians Beliefs, Attitudes, and Practices Regarding
the Integration of Patient Spirituality Into Medical Care
Michael Olson, PhD; Victor Sierpina, MD
A qualitative approach was used to explore family physicians
beliefs, attitudes, and practices regarding the integration of patient
spirituality into clinical care. Participants included family medicine
residents completing training. The approach drew on phenomenology and
elements of grounded theory. Four main themes regarding physicians
attitudes, beliefs, and practices were apparent from the analyses: (1)
nature of spiritual assessment in practice, (2) experience connecting
spirituality and medicine, (3) personal barriers to clinical practice,
and (4) reflected strengths of an integrated approach. There was an
almost unanimous conviction among respondents that openness to
discussing spirituality contributes to better health and
physician-patient relationships and addressing spiritual issues
requires sensitivity, patience, tolerance for ambiguity, dealing with
time constraints, and sensitivity to one's own spiritual place.

SP64 Using a Health and Spirituality Survey to Enhance
Integral/Integrative Medicine in Predoctoral Medical Education
John McCall III, PhD; Allen Pelletier, MD
There is a growing movement in medical education to go beyond the
simple biomedical approach in teaching and delivering health care by
integrating the biomedical, psychosocial, spirituality model of health
in teaching and practice within an integral/integrative medicine
framework. Student surveys are important tools for developing and
implementing integral/integrative medicine components in medical
education curriculum. A 12-item Health and Spirituality Survey that
has been completed by all family medicine clerkship students since
2004 is being used as an interactive tool for teaching this component.
The primary focus of this presentation is on the results, application,
and conclusions of the Health and Spirituality Survey.

SP80 Healing and Hopefulness: A Tool of Physician Well-being
Jo Marie Reilly, MD; Jeffrey Ring, PhD
Medical training is a rigorous process marked by intense stress.
Physicians are at risk for burnout if they cannot achieve balance and
personal well-being. We believe that physician well-being deserves
directed, regular attention over the course of medical training and
have sought out strategies for incorporating such interventions into
the residency program. One such intervention, Healing and Hopefulness
or "H and H," is a monthly faculty/housestaff discussion faciliated by
a physician and a psychologist. It is juxtaposed with the monthly
morbidity and mortality and focuses on what physicians are "doing
right" to include (1) physicians' power as healers, (2) the
doctor/patient relationship, (3) spirituality in the healing process,
(4) events that affirm oneself and/or one's colleagues that made a
difference, (5) events that affirm their career choice as physicians,
(6) appreciation of peer and/or faculty support, and (7) remarkable
relationships with patients.
ALSO there will be a Common Interest Group Breakfast at 7am on
Thursday April 27th, and a Special Topic Breakfast (re: spiritual
assessment) at 7am on Friday April 28th.
DON"T FORGET OUR GROUP MEETING at noon on Saturday. Place TBA
