I'm in the middle of PHS grants, and have ankle surgery tomorrow so I can't
spend a lot of time replying.
However, a key element of our curriculum is experiential. We have experiences at
hospice sites, detox centers, inpatient addictions treatment, and
nursing/long-term care facilities, We also send our trainees on "home" visits
with chronic or terminally ill patients. In addition we have each resident for
three to four half days. About 6 to 8 hours of that time is spend shadowing
chaplains. They have two experiences. I is at the local VA hospital, the other
is at a children's hospital. This gives them very different patient populations
and scenarios. Older, mostly male patients, versus younger patients of both
sexes, and extended and significant family involvement, etc.
More later
I would like to hear what kind of experiential opportunities each of you are
giving trainees, at either the predoc or graduate levels. Let us keep this
conversation going

Rounding with Clinical Pastoral Care residents is part of our new
Spirituality Curriculum elective rotation at Madigan Army Medical Center.
Our first resident to go through the rotation, which also includes outpatient
pastoral counseling and a scholarly activity requirement, starts in January.
It's a work in progress, so I'll know a lot more around 15 Jan. I've had
another resident ask about the rotation for next academic year as well.
