I have been promoting the Wednesday night meeting at the Addiction Institute. I
am
hoping to have at least three of my peers from the progam attend. Does anyone
know who
the facilitator will be tomorrow?
Hi Debbie,
Nice to meet you on Sunday. I am officially signed up now too!

Hi Jeffrey,
I don't know if we've met. I'm Gary. I'll be facilitating. I'm a regular over
at the Ellis.
I hope you find success in getting others to join us!

I am Dawn from Westchester--the Croton area. Just dropping in to
say, "HI." I am going to try to make it to the city tomorrow--try,
that is... My current project is to begin a meeting--perhaps in
Putnam. In the meantime, I look forward to getting to know more of my
NY neighbors.
Dawn
Hi Jeffrey !! Was nice to meet you Sunday too and sooooo good to see you here - I am a SMART online junkie so to speak - I wont be in Queens this Sunday as I have family obligations but hope to see you guys the following Sunday .........
I wish I could attend the Wed night group this week in Manhattan but I cant - even though Queens is my weekly group coming into the West Side of Manhattan from the Bronx is fairly quick and easy so I am going to try to come on Wed if and when I can - so, I hope to see you Jeffrey and Gary and maybe meet DAWN too one day !! Gary you led a good meeting last week - it was nice to meet you and the others from Manhattan.............
Dawn we spoke at SMART online several times -I used to attend meetings online and go into Parachat alot - now I just stay on the Wagon Train Forum mostly and post here and there - I am Debbie / aka Caring Hands - not sure if you remember me but I would love to meet you someday -
I would love to see a Bronx group someday too !! Ok all - have a good meeting tomorrow night - hope to see you all soon in SMARTLAND - I am excited about this yahoogroup!!

Hello everyone:
We had a rather cozy meeting out here in Queens this morning, with a
total of 3 in attendance. The main topic of the meeting was "Anger",
with an informal discussion taking place. Anger has been a trigger
that has acted as a trigger for addictive behaviors in many.
Strategies that were discussed:
Challenging irrational beliefs about situations that lead to anger
("It should be as I want it to be")
Developing higher frustration tolerance.
Developing more appropriate responses to others (assertive Vs. non-
assertive or agressive responses).
Michael.
Hey Mike - Sorry I missed today - sounds like a good topic - family obligations prevented me - but I will be there next week - then will have to miss the following two weeks thereafter (have to work) thanks for the update !!

OK thanks
in response to youre email re anger it was short and
to the point in conveying ie coziness, triggers, anger
and sratagies it sweems to be a pretty universal
underlying force that i can relate to that why me why
cant i be treated special i shoudnt have to wait in
line like others or pay my bills like others in
otherwords i want to do the crime but not do- pay the
time anyway i think ill get off the isle of manhattan
and get out to youre queens meet cawsey

Hello,
Jeffrey here. You have to change it on your main Yahoo

Hello everyone:
Today's SMART Recovery meeting in Queens was attended by a total of
6, all previous participants in this group. The focus was mostly
point one, with a rather loose discussion held concerning elements
to consider in doing a cost-benefit analysis. For example, one
topic discussed was:
Coming to terms with the fact that alternative behaviors often will
never produce the same "bang for the buck" as the addictive
behavior, but alternative behaviors will often suffice in providing
satisfaction and/or relief - at a much lower price.
Peripheral topics included:
A reprise of the "assertive option" discussion of the previous week
The addictive voice - times and places when it is especially
persuasive.
Michael.
Hey Mike - great meeting today - your synopsis was articulate- I
particularly liked the free style change and I think its good to do
every once in awhile - rather than always doing an ABC or CBA - its
nice to let people just talk about whats on their minds or a particular
topic and to give input to each other ...with a CBA or ABC it generally
focuses on one person and may take away from someone else who needs to
talk - we have a good group going in Queens - your efforts are paying
off - Thanks !!
Debbie
Hi Mike,
Thanks for the summary. The Saturday meeting at the Ellis was facilitated
by Ellen, covering for Rene who had some last minute transportation problems
come up. Interestingly, our discussion focused a great deal on points 3
(managing thoughts, feelings, and behaviors) and 4 (lifestyle balance). We
talked a lot about challenges involved in giving up the euphoria of the
addictive habit and working to become comfortable with the content (and far
less dramatic) non-using existence.
Different meeting - different borough - similar discussion.
Gary

well to
characterize the non addictive life as lest dramatic
life is for my expierence a pure irrational belief
lets do an a.b.c on that point cawsey

For those of you coming to Queens this Sunday, a reminder that metered
parking on Sunday will no longer be in effect starting this Sunday.
Prior to the introduction of Sunday metered parking, finding a parking
spot around the Queens meeting was a bit harder. I'd allow an extra
10-15 minutes until we see how it works out this time around.
Michael.
Thanks for the heads up Mike -that is truly gonna suck about the parking - not sure if I will be there this week anyway - I have to work at 2pm - cutting it close - but I may just pop in -
Who are you, iknead....etc.?

Today's meeting in Queens was attended by a total of 4, with one new
participant. The meeting was mostly focused on basic tools, as our
new participant was only several weeks clean from her addictive
behavior, and struggling with both emotional distress and urges and
cravings. An overview of the first three points was conducted, along
with a lengthy ABC about the emotional distress, it's causes (triggers
and beliefs), and how that the distress itself became an activating
event for a subsequent cycle leading to the addictive behavior itself.
Michael.
tonight we had a group of 6 people, one new person. we had a discussion about a member's recent event and went through identifying and disputing the irrational beliefs associated with it. we then created some effective new beliefs and behaviors. a number of people found the activity of writing down the beliefs and their disputes to be very helpful.
