And the South Carolina Youth Soccer Site

http://www.scysa.org/programs/topsoccer.aspx

There is no charge to participate and we only require Players to complete a registration form available at http://www.carolinaelitesc.com/TOPSoccer/index_E.html

Or at check in.

Buddies we ask that you to sign in when you come to help.

No reservations required, just come ready to have fun.

Drinks & Snacks

At the end of the sessions we try and provide a snack and drink for all the players and buddies as they leave. At our first meeting we will have a signup sheet for people to volunteer to bring snacks or drinks to one of the sessions this fall. Check at the table when you check in. Thank you very much for helping with this.

About Strides for Autism:

Strides for Autism is SCAS’s signature fund-raising and awareness walk.  The Lowcountry and Grand Strand events are the final of our four statewide walks that take place each year.  The walks are among various activities that benefit the organization and the families it serves.

Why it is important to support the South Carolina Autism Society through Strides for Autism?

According to Craig Stoxen, President & CEO of the South Carolina Autism Society, we have two goals with our Strides event.
  1. To raise the awareness of autism spectrum disorders. With the occurrence rate of autism at 1 in 88, everyone is or will soon be affected in one way or another by autism. It may be a family member or it may be coworker’s child or a friend’s child. So the better understanding our society has, the better the quality of life for those on the spectrum will be.
  2. To raise funds for the South Carolina Autism Society. This fundraiser is to help ensure SCAS can meet the needs of families through information and referral, trainings and workshops and advocacy.
Where does that money go?

Monies go to help support this mission of the South Carolina Autism Society, which is, “To enable all individuals with autism spectrum disorders to reach their maximum potential.”  According to the South Carolina Secretary of State’s website, almost 90% of all monies go directly towards Program Expenses, which means that almost $1,000,000 a year is going directly to help support those with autism in South Carolina.  All monies raised for the South Carolina Autism Society stay in South Carolina.

What does the South Carolina Autism Society do?

The South Carolina Autism Society is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization which has been assisting families for 40 years.  We provide the following programs:
  • Information and Referral:  Providing information to parents and professionals about autism and available services.
  • Advocacy:  SCAS provides advocacy on all levels from the individual level on up to the system change level.
  • Autism and Informed Response:  Training for emergency responders (law enforcement, EMS, fire fighters, etc) on autism, using parent volunteers.
  • Parent-School Partnership:  To assist children with autism in receiving the best education possible by helping to build relationships between the school and the parents.
  • Service Coordination:  Is an expansion of the society’s existing programs of information and referral and advocacy.  SCAS will provide service coordination to individuals with autism spectrum disorders.
  • Workshops and Conference:  Our 2012 speakers will be Larry Bissonnette and Tracy Thresher from the movie Wretches and Jabberers, and Dr. Stephen Shore

Message from the President

As you can imagine, putting on an annual conference can be quite the chore. The issue that I worry most about is the keynote speakers.  I fear if they will be well known enough to raise the interest in the conference. Will the speakers have a broad enough appeal to represent the whole spectrum?

It is not always easy to find, schedule and afford good speakers. But we do our best and often try to bring in speakers that have been recommended by families.

This year, I am personally very excited about our lineup of keynote speakers. You can find their professional bio in this newsletter. But I thought I would share a little from my perspective.

First, let me say upfront that I have known Stephen Shore for a long time. I have seen him present many times at other conferences and I am confident that he will bring a wealth of knowledge and experience that will be extremely helpful. Stephen has traveled the world speaking on his experience in living on the spectrum. Not only is Stephen a self-advocate, he is also a great advocate for all those with ASD. He has served on many boards and most notable, he has been a member of the federal Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee.

I am also very excited to have Larry and Tracy here from the documentary Wretches and Jabbers. These are two guys who many would have said that they are very limited as to what they can do. I am sure most people they have encountered throughout their lives would have immediately had very low expectations for them. But these two guys are determined to achieve much more in life. And they will be at out conference on the 20th to talk about their advocacy efforts and how that has taken them around the world.

I think this is a great lineup. I think this is the first time that we will be having keynotes that spans across the spectrum to this degree. I hope you will join us and experience this for yourselves. We have worked hard to keep the cost as low as possible and we still have some parent scholarships available.

See you on the 20th.

About Our Presenters

Diagnosed with "Atypical Development with strong autistic tendencies", Dr. Stephen Shore was viewed as "too sick" to be treated on an outpatient basis and recommended for institutionalization. Nonverbal until four, and with much help from his parents, teachers and others, Stephen completed his doctoral dissertation at Boston University focused on matching best practice to the needs of people on the autism spectrum. Recently, Dr. Shore has accepted a professorship at Adelphi University teaching courses in special education and autism.

In addition to working with children and talking about life on the autism spectrum, Stephen presents and consults internationally on adult issues pertinent to education, relationships, employment, advocacy and disclosure as discussed in his books, "Beyond the Wall: Personal Experiences with Autism and Asperger Syndrome", "Ask and Tell: Self-Advocacy and Disclosure for People on the Autism Spectrum" and the critcally acclaimed "Understanding Autism for Dummies".

President emeritus of the Asperger's Association of New England, Dr. Shore serves on the Interagency Coordinating Committee, for the Board of Directors for Autism Society of America, Unlocking Autism, MAAP, the College Internship Program and USAAA.

Larry Bissonnette is an advocate and artist who lives in Milton, Vermont and has had his work exhibited regularly both locally and nationally. Larry is one of the featured artists of the GRACE (Grass Roots Art and Community Effort) project based in Hardwick, Vermont. In 1991, Larry learned to communicate through typing and began combining words with his art to express his thoughts and ideas. Over the past 15 years, he has been a featured presenter at many educational conferences and has written and spoken on the topics of autism, communication and art.

Tracy Thresher is an advocate for people with disabilities. He lives and works in Vermont.  Tracy began typing to communicate in 1990 and was one of the first individuals with autism at Washington County Mental Health Services (a community-based service provider) to be introduced to it. He has presented at local, statewide, and national workshops and conferences. He has consulted with local schools, is a member of the Vermont Statewide Standing Committee and has worked for the Green Mountain Self-Advocates in Montpelier, Vermont. In Vermont, he mentors teenagers and adults. Most recently, Tracy has consulted at Syracuse University as a lead trainer.

World renowned golf course designer Tom Fazio once said "A golf course should belong to nature instead of infringe upon it."

Fazio has skillfully molded the unique Midlands environment and topography into a scenic, challenging course that reveals more of its subtleties each time you play. Winding through hardwoods, wetlands, hills and valleys, Woodcreek is a natural beauty.  You will encounter dazzling displays of wildflowers, natural streams, lakes, and even a waterfall.  Driving through the Pecan Grove between holes 16 and 17, you will experience the powerful and unmistakable presence of Nature itself.  It is as if you have stepped back in time...or out of it...into a place of absolute stillness.

The entire course has an ambiance of serenity and tranquility that lets you concentrate on your game, enjoy the company of friends and experience the essence of the sport...the way it was meant to be played.

Message from the President

I normally do not spend a lot of time talking about our conference speakers after they have presented, but this year I am making an exception.

I have been working on SCAS conferences for 16 years now. And this year’s speakers, in my opinion exceeded any other years.  I don’t know if it was the three individuals themselves or the combination, but this year’s conference will be tough to top.

Stephen was absolutely terrific. He provided such great information and was able to include the personal live experience to the topic. He was also so amazing to take so much time to talk with individuals, dealing with some very personal issues. Stephen provided great insight and ideas. I am not sure why I have not brought him in in the past, but we will definitely have him back again.

I am not even sure if I can express my experience with Tracy and Larry. They were simply amazing. I have seen the movie, Wretches and Jabbers multiple times and every time I see it I am just so impressed and amazed by these two incredible guys. By the way, if you have not seen it, it is now available on demand on Netflix.

So many people would very readily write these guys off as to not having much to offer. But boy are they wrong. It was amazing to get to know Larry and Tracy and to see them present.  They were asked some though and deep questions and all were answered in depth and with a great sense of humor.

The conference I think was so unique in that Stephen holds a Ph.D. and lectures for a living, his ability to communicate is vital to his career. But then we saw Tracy and Larry whose need to communicate was truly ignored for many years and now through the use of technology, they can be heard loud and clear.

These three guys shared their journey with us and I even several weeks later, as I sit here thinking about their presentations, I am in awe of these guys. As I said in the beginning of this article, this year’s conference will be difficult to top.

Thanks,
Craig Stoxen
President & CEO

Thanksgiving Turkey Drive

Since 2008, The LUCAS Network has initiated and partnered with The SC Autism Society and a number of other autism organizations to provide families having a child with autism or other disability in need with a Thanksgiving dinner. Last year we were been able to provide over 125 families a Thanksgiving Day meal. That makes close to 400 families in need that have been provided a Thanksgiving Day meal since 2008.

Our goal this year is to match last year’s number of 125 families in the Upstate but if we go over, we want to help more families in the Midlands, Lowcountry and Myrtle Beach areas as well. So, please donate today! Your donation is tax deductible.

To make a donation now, visit the SC Autism Society’s website, and click on the Donate button.  In the In Honor Of, In Memory of or Comment section, just write TURKEY and the donation will go directly towards the Turkey Drive.

If you are interested in receiving a meal, please contact your Service Coordinator.

Data Security Update

How SCAS is Protecting You

large_box_top.gif

SC Autism Society Data Security

palmettopuzzle40yrs

In light of the recent security breach at the South Carolina Department of Revenue, I wanted to take a moment to let everyone know about security procedures in place at the South Carolina Autism Society (SCAS).

First, SCAS is a registered 503(c) non-profit, not affiliated with the South Carolina state government.

The following is a summary of our online security.

Credit Card Information

  • We maintain NO credit card information for any online donations or orders.  All of our credit card processing is handled through authorize.net, an industry leader in online payments since 1996.  Additionally, we subscribe to their fraud protection program.
  • We maintain NO electronic copies of credit card information for any donations or orders submitted by phone, in writing, or by any other means.  There are no databases or spreadsheets at SCAS containing credit card information.

·         Because of the above, any time you make a donation to SCAS or place an order, you will have to provide your credit card information.  We appreciate your patience with this, so that we can continue to ensure your information remains private.

Social Security Number Information

  • We maintain NO electronic copies of social security numbers for any SCAS client, current or former.
  • We have NO databases or spreadsheets at SCAS containing social security numbers.

What we DO have

  • Name, contact information, and membership history for SCAS members.
  • Name and contact information for SCAS donors.
  • Name and contact information for SCAS customers (those making purchases).

Note that the information we maintain is stored in password protected and/or encrypted files.  At no time do we provide contact information to any third-parties.

Should you have any questions about the security of your information at the South Carolina Autism Society, feel free to contact me.  For information and instructions for all South Carolina residents on the SC Department of Revenue situation, visit http://cts.vresp.com/c/?SouthCarolinaAutismS/a5bd11a5b8/1bde722e94/78836d2fe7.

Thank you,
