Subject: All Are Welcome -- Steering Committee Recruitment
connysmom
Send Email Send Email

All Are Welcome is a project of the South Carolina Autism Society (funded by the SC Developmental Disabilities Council) that works to develop resources to help faith communities to be come inclusive and welcoming.   In the first year of this grant, we created a training video and curriculum for church and ministry leaders.  For more information on All Are Welcome, please click here.

Often it is the individual with a disability or their family who must approach their place of worship for help in establishing methods for full inclusion.  Therefore, in the second year of this grant, we will create a multimedia turnkey curriculum for those members of the faith community help guide them to assist in developing a welcoming community.

We are currently seeking individuals who are interested in serving on the Steering Committee for Year 2.  The role of the Steering Committee is as follows:

The Steering Committee will evaluate the most pressing needs of families with loved ones with disabilities so that they can fully participate in their faith community.  The Steering Committee will assist the Project Coordinator with establishing the priority area, background research, and the development and distribution of the materials. The Steering Committee will have a broad variety of people participating. Family Connection and SC Autism Society worked together to establish this committee. The committee will serve as a sounding board and advisors for the project as the project moves forward. They will provide valuable input into the curriculum, and some members of the committee may also be asked to be a part of any video portion of the curriculum to discuss their experience as well as what it means to the individual and the family to be a full and active part of the faith community.

We generally hold monthly meetings, and encourage members to attend.  However if you cannot attend, it is still possible to participate.

If you are interested in participating in the All Are Welcome Steering Committee for Year 2, please click here to complete the information form.

Thank you!

Why it is important to support the South Carolina Autism Society through Strides for Autism?

According to Craig Stoxen, President & CEO of the South Carolina Autism Society, we have two goals with our Strides event.

1)       To raise the awareness of autism spectrum disorders. With the occurrence rate of autism at 1 in 110 everyone is or will soon be affected in one way or another by autism. It may be a family member or it may be coworker’s child or a friend’s child. So the better understanding our society has, the better the quality of life for those on the spectrum will be.

2)       To raise funds for the South Carolina Autism Society. This fundraiser is to help ensure SCAS can meet the needs of families through information and referral, trainings and workshops and advocacy.

Where does that money go?

Monies go to help support this mission of the South Carolina Autism Society, which is, “To enable all individuals with autism spectrum disorders to reach their maximum potential.”  According to the South Carolina Secretary of State’s website, almost 90% of all monies go directly towards Program Expenses, which means that almost $1,000,000 a year is going directly to help support those with autism in South Carolina.

What does the South Carolina Autism Society do?

The South Carolina Autism Society is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization which has been assisting families for more than 35 years.  We provide the following programs:

  • Information and Referral:  Providing information to parents and professionals about autism and available services.
  • Advocacy:  SCAS provides advocacy on all levels from the individual level on up to the system change level.
  • Autism and Informed Response:  Training for emergency responders (law enforcement, EMS, fire fighters, etc) on autism, using parent volunteers.
  • Parent-School Partnership:  To assist children with autism in receiving the best education possible by helping to build relationships between the school and the parents.
  • Service Coordination:  Is an expansion of the society’s existing programs of information and referral and advocacy.  SCAS will provide service coordination to individuals with autism spectrum disorders.
  • Workshops and Conference:  Dr. Temple Grandin will be the keynote speaker at our October 15, 2011 conference!
  • Special Projects, such as:
    • Key Indicators and Training (KAIT) Project
    • Autism Training Collaborative
    • Project MEANS (Meaningful Engagement Around the Needs of a Student)
    • All Are Welcome faith inclusion training

Now that you know why Strides for Autism is so important, it’s time to Create your own Team, and then encourage friends, family, and your community to sponsor you!  Donations can be made online, or brought to the event.  Additional information and pre-registration is available on the Strides for Autism website located at

Don't miss the South Carolina Autism Society's Annual Conference, featuring Dr. Temple Grandin as Keynote Speaker!

Dr. Temple Grandin was born in Boston, Massachusetts. Temple’s achievements are remarkable because she was a child with autism. At age two she had no speech and all the signs of severe autism. Fortunately, her mother defied the advice of the doctors and kept her out of an institution. Many hours of speech therapy, and intensive teaching enabled Temple to learn speech. As a teenager, life was hard with constant teasing. Mentoring by her high school science teacher and her aunt on her ranch in Arizona motivated Temple to study and pursue a career as a scientist and livestock equipment designer. Dr. Grandin was awarded her Ph.D in Animal Science from the University of Illinois in 1989 and is currently a Professor at Colorado State University.

Click here for even more information on Dr. Grandin.

HBO has recently premiered a movie about Temple’s early life and career with the livestock industry. The movie received seven Emmy awards and Claire Danes won the Best Actress, Mini-Series or TV Movie Golden Globe for her role as Temple Grandin.

Additional Speakers to include Medical Professionals from across South Carolina updating on the latest autism news, and Jodi Cholewickie discussing Best Practices.

Your registration includes Lunch, SCAS Annual Meeting, and Annual Awards Presentation.

We are in need of items to be donated for an auction that will be held during the Uniquely Union BBQ festival. Anything you are able to donate for this event will be greatly appreciated. Whether it be products, gift certificates, vacation destinations or any other item you choose will generate money for this cause.

All money from this event will be divided in half and donated to the Walk Now For Autism Speaks in October at Charlotte Motor Speedway and to the South Carolina Autism Society.

Do It Yourself
Home Made Language Builder Cards

This is a great Occupational therapy craft that you and your child can do together.  It is very inexpensive and is a great cost savings addition to your ABA therapy program.  Take a few of your local kids magazines, newspaper articles, etc.

Take your index cards, scissors, and glue sticks and make "imitation language builder cards" for your child.  Have your child cut out pictures, colors, numbers, letters and paste them to the cards.  You can work on cutting skills as well as language skills during this activity.  The best part, you get to spend time with your child!

Additional information and pre-registration is available on the Strides for Autism website located at

http://www.scautism.org/strides/

Opportunities for Sponsorship, as well as spaces in our Resource Fair, are still available.  Visit https://scautism.org/strides/sponsorships/ for more information.

Onsite registration at both events begins at 8:00 am, with the walk beginning at 9 am.  Note that this is a “walk-what-you-can” event.

Best of luck to all teams and individuals as we take Strides for Autism!  Remember, together we can solve the puzzle!

World renowned golf course designer Tom Fazio once said "A golf course should belong to nature instead of infringe upon it." Fazio has skillfully molded the unique Midlands environment and topography into a scenic, challenging course that reveals more of its subtleties each time you play. Winding through hardwoods, wetlands, hills and valleys, Woodcreek is a natural beauty. You will encounter dazzling displays of wildflowers, natural streams, lakes, and even a waterfall. Driving through the Pecan Grove between holes 16 and 17, you will experience the powerful and unmistakable presence of Nature itself. It is as if you have stepped back in time...or out of it...into a place of absolute stillness. The entire course has an ambience of serenity and tranquility that lets you concentrate on your game, enjoy the company of friends and experience the essence of the sport...the way it was meant to be played.

Hi Autism Friends in the Columbia Area –

The Autism Academy of South Carolina has teamed up with First Baptist Church of Columbia to bring a new respite opportunity to families.  We’ll kick off the new program with a mini-night of respite on Sunday, September 25th from 5:00 to 7:00.  You can start arriving at 4:30 to spend a little time transitioning your kids to the new program before you leave for a couple hours of grocery-shopping, eating out, reading a book, getting ready for the school week, or doing absolutely nothing!

The kind volunteers at First Baptist Church are just getting started with this respite program, so the first one will be just a few hours long and limited to children with autism between the ages of 4 and 12 and their siblings.  Space is limited, and you must let us know you’re coming by Thursday, September 22nd.  To sign up, call Anne Marie Green at 803-727-4897.

Attached is a flyer with this same information.  Please help spread the word!

Thanks, and I look forward to seeing you there!

USC Neurodevelopmental Disorders Lab Study

Studies have shown that early identification is critical to early intervention and optimal development for children who are at risk for developmental delays.  We are interested in learning about the early development of infants who may be at risk for developmental delays, as well as those who are typically developing.

We are currently recruiting families with infants under 24 months of age who:
have been diagnosed with the FMR1 premutation or full mutation of fragile X syndrome
have an older sibling diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder
have been diagnosed with Williams syndrome

We are also interested in speaking with families who are expecting the birth of a child who may fit these criteria.

If you are interested in learning more about this study or similar studies at USC, pelase contact
USCDevelopmentLab@... or 803-777-3024.
