Please visit this link

If you have Internet Explorer, please click on your "full screen" option to properly view the site.  Pictured at this site are photos and profiles of some "endangered" dogs at Animal Care Services.  They have been there FAR TOO LONG and need homes soon!!  It is baffling how these dogs have remained so long without being adopted because they are ALL AWESOME dogs with fantastic and fun personalities.  They oooze personality and would make ideal pets!  Maybe it's because there are just soooooo many animals at ACS and it's hard to see them as individuals??  For whatever reasons, these beautiful dogs remain unadopted at Animal Care Services and need out of there quickly.

Won't you please take a peek, and forward this message far and wide to give these precious souls more exposure?  Maybe one of these sweet dogs will be the perfect new family member for someone you forward this message to ...  :)

Thank you,

Hello veggie friends! Here are two more chances to get together and
be vegan before this year ends...

From the San Antonio Meet up Vegan Group (I'll be there)

This is one of my Favorite Local Bands. Wine And Alchemy. They play
Gypsy Music and they're great to listen to. They will be performing
at Nine Live Books Store at 7PM on Saturday, December 20th.

This Bookstore is a place filled with cats. So if anybody that has
cat allergies, please: DO NOT COME. I don't want anybody to get sick.
This place is a way to raise funds for the stray cat refuge. I don't
remember the official name, but I do ask everybody who come by, to
donate for this animal refuge.

Here's the following sites for more info.

Daniel from Vegan Meet Up

And From Green Vegetarian Restaurant....

Kaz,

We're looking for volunteers to deliver 450 meals to the San Antonio
Fire Department Stations on Christmas Day. Could you pass this info
on to SAVS for me? Volunteers should call (210) 3205865 to sign up.
We'll be serving between 11am and 2:30pm.

Peace,
Mike

SNAP GETS $25K IN MS. ALABAMA SUIT
It was fortunate timing with the San Antonio dog spay-neuter law to
become effective January 1st. After founder Joel Hailey's client,
Alabama Animal Adoption Society, prevailed in a suit concerning the
will of former Miss Alabama, Jessie Anna Stange who was an ardent
animal lover, Hailey recommended to the court that to fulfill her
desires to stop the suffering of strays caused by overpopulation,
Spay-Neuter Assistance Program (SNAP) receive part of the estate that
she intended for use in San Antonio.

Today, SNAP Operations Director Dr. James Weedon received a $25,000
partial distribution from the estate which will aid SNAP as it hopes
to provide an increased amount of low-cost spay-neuters when the new
law becomes effective.

"Support, such as this from the Estate of Jessie Anna Strange in
addition to our individual, corporate and foundation support, helps
SNAP provide these services to the animals of San Antonio and their
guardians." said Weedon. "Together, we can help the animals and gain
compliance with the new ordinance. At SNAP we say, 'No-Birth is The
First Step To No-Kill' and we want to help San Antonio arrive at that
destination."

Animal Defense League, also a beneficiary, received a similar check
from the estate today. Many thanks to Ms. Stange for her compassion
and conscience in trying to stop the disease that results in
thousands of homeless, suffering animals: the lack of spay-neuter!

Hi Sara, and welcome! I was at the meeting at La Fonda too, but I
didn't get a chance to meet you. I did get the chance to sit with a
couple of people I'd never met before who were members of a vegan
Meetup group. So there were people there from SAVS, the Hailey
Foundation, Voice for Animals and a vegan Meetup group. It's still not
easy, but it's getting a little easier to be vegetarian in SA. The more
we all unite, the easier it'll get!

Hope to meet you---maybe at this month's SAVS dinner on the last
Tuesday of the month.

Margarita

Hi everyone! I was really glad to find this group! Yes, San Antonio (or
Texas in general) is not the easiest place to be a vegetarian, let
alone find good support. Anyway, just wanted to say hi and introduce
myself! Thanks to Mr. Joel Hailey, I was able to attend the Farm Animal
Day banquet at La Fonda and got to meet some nice people. Hopefully
I'll get to meet some more people in the near future! :)

10/1 FILM/BANQUET--WORLD FARM ANIMALS DAY
Alissa Hernandez, Assistant Executive Director of The Hailey
Foundation, writes: "I think people as farmers should treat farm
animals as they would a household pet....we should respect all
animals and shun the thought of animal abuse, and object to
artificial impregnations and growth hormones given to young
livestock. If an animal on a farm is treated that way everyone
suffers--the people doing it, the people that consume these chemicals
and the animal, most of all."

Please attend our World Farm Animals Day banquet and film at La Fonda
Oak Hills on Oct. 1 at 7:00 p.m. We will screen the non-violent, non-
graphic documentary The Emotional World of Farm Animals, by Jeffrey
Moussaleff Masson, author of When Elephants Weep. The film will
surprise many viewers by revealing the affectionate qualities of
livestock animals. Before the film, vegetarian cooking instructor
Gloria Weers will speak in observance of World Vegetarian Awareness
Day.

The $11.50 vegan dinner will include a vegetarian burrito, rice,
beans, chips, salsa, soda, tax and gratuity. Alcoholic drinks are
extra. La Fonda is located at Fredericksburg Rd. and Northaven Dr.,
1 block North (outside) of Loop 410 near Crossroads Mall on the
Northwest side of town. You may RSVP by replying to this e-mail or
by calling 210-333-3310.

WILDLIFE-RESCUE SAVES FARM ANIMALS
Lynn Cuny (above with goat Baby Bill), Executive Director of Wildlife
Rescue & Rehabilitation, says: "Some years ago we decided that since
Wildlife Rescue (WRR) was fortunate enough to have 200 acres, it was
time to begin rescuing animals who are commonly found on farms. Since
some of the animals in our care came from a sanctuary that had to
close its doors, we decided to adopt the name of that sanctuary for
these animals at WRR: the Do No Harm Farm. Many of the animals here
came from abusive homes or were rescued off the auction block. No
matter their personal histories, these intelligent beings leave their
pasts behind and make new friends here at WRR. From a small, timid
donkey named Cletus who immediately adopted an elderly Mule called
Mulie, to a partially crippled pig who found an instant friend in
large white rabbit-like you and I, these animals reach beyond the
boundaries of self and species to the more intimate depth of
individual personalities in relationship and there they find peace
and companionship in a setting where once and for all they can live
in safety. "

From V.O.
VeganOutreach forwarded me your contact information. If you are
interested in helping me leaflet colleges as part of Adopt A College
(www.veganhealth.org/colleges - amazing results and statistics, save
tens of 1,000's of animals in hours) in many of YOUR regions that
would be nice, see my schedule below. Feel free to ask me any
questions and reply if you are interested at all, even if only on
future occasions.

You can gain experience, see first hand how simple and effective
leafleting by the 1,000's is and hopefully continue to do so on your
own in the future ~ since many of these colleges have lots of
students that will be missed on these brief trips.
San Antonio Regions: (Mon-Thurs) Early October?
Mon-Tues - UTSA - Need a Student Present
Weds - San Antonio College

Thanks for your help, especially with UTSA and UT Arlington students
that are much needed! Also I hope that you will consider leafleting
in the future on your own and report back to VO (Why Vegan & EI
booklets can be obtained basically for free if necessary) to save me
future trips and personal travel expenses, since it is a strain
covering most of the state, when I also work full time at an Airport,
Thurs - Sunday 3pm-3am and also take time off to cover our areas.

We do live in an area that is one of the best in the country for many
larger college leafleting opportunities so should take advantage of
it.

Our States links (save/favorite):
www.veganhealth.org/colleges/state/TX and for full time student
enrollments www.infoplease.com/edu/colleges/TX.html (its good to
cover at least 15% of the students per year)

*Email me at least a few days before the trip to your area starts.

NEW LEGAL TREATISE ON RACEHORSING
The Animal Legal and Historical Center of Michigan State University
College of Law has recently published That's the Breaks: Trainer
Responsibility for Racehorse Breakdowns in New York, authored by
Cynthia F. Hodges, MA, JD, a member of the State Bar of Texas Animal
Law Section (http://animallaw.info/topics/spusracehorsetrainer.htm )

Hodges argues that trainers in New York should be prosecuted for
cruelty when racehorses break down. Interestingly, a similar
argument might be made for Texas racehorsing, as Texas Penal Code
Sec. 42.09(a)(9) provides that a person commits an offense when
he "seriously overworks" a horse.

For all you vegetarian animal lovers out there.

L.A. BREEDING LAWS SUCCEED
The Hailey Foundation, a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt public charity

After passing an ordinance requiring $100 annual breeding permits for
dogs and cats and requiring that roaming cats be spayed or neutered,
the City of Los Angeles has seen its euthanasia rate for dogs and
cats steadily decrease from 37,833 in 2001 to 15,009 in 2007. Check
the statistics at www.LAAnimalServices.com/about_stats.htm

And in an attempt to reach No-Kill status sooner, L.A. has recently
passed a law requiring all dogs and cats be spayed or neutered unless
the owner obtains a breeding permit or another exception applies
(www.LAAnimalServices.com).

San Antonio should learn from the L.A. example: instead of a mere $50
litter permit, require a $100 breeding permit!

This doesn't really answer your question but I don't think mama
margie's is particularly "new".. not sure how long it's been there
but I have worked across the street for 2 years and it's been there
the whole time. They have another location, too, on Zarzamora I
think. With that said, I somtimes indulge and get their potato
breakfast tacos. I have no idea if their beans have lard in them or
not, though.

Hi everyone,

after having read the informative and even invigorating thread on veggie burgers (my fave is OrderUp's with the Green Burger at close second) I thought I'd post a question that my wife and I have had for some time.

See, we both really love the thick totopos, the homecooked flavour, and the genuine ambience of corner taquerías.  Back in Houston we lived just across Montrose Blvd from one of the (then) most venerated taquerías in town, and we want something a cut above TC's black bean taco, above Chacho's guac gordita.

I went to one out on the west side called Taquería DF, and it was wonderful and they ***said*** that they consistently abstain from putting any manteca (lard) in their tortillas and beans ("por razones de salud," they claimed, "for health reasons") ... I trusted them, because the way in which I asked (not "I'm vegan and do you put lard in this" but "Hi! Do you do this the traditional way, with lard, or do you use vegetable oil?") assured me that I was getting the truth.

Still, I wonder.  Did I eat lard that day? It sucks, being put in such a quandary.

Does anyone know of a good taquería whose "vegetarian" options don't include the bodies of our curly-tailed friends?

(PS Watch out for the rice at TC -- there's chicken in it! and they put animal grease in their refried beans!)

Much love from one embattled SA vegan to all of you.

Hi all. TGIFriday's no longer offers the gardenburger, however Chili's does offer a black bean burger substitute (Morningstar Farms spicy black bean patty) on salads (in lieu of chicken, beef, etc) and as a substitute for a beef burger. I had a great soy meatloaf dish at Green awhile back. The Gardenburger veggie burger at Burger King is a little bland but its nice that a major fast food chain actually has a vegetarian substitute.

It's an odd thing, when your body says no and your mind and your spirit say yes. It's frightening and empowering and clarifying and beautiful all at once. It was the past year of my life, shortened into a span of 26.2 arduous miles. It was the culmination of experiences, the knowledge that my body can be pushed past its breaking point, just like my heart. In both instances, when you come to the end of yourself, God's grace is all that sustains. And it is enough.

Good point about looking for dairy in the burgers. And cheese that has casein in it isn't vegetarian either. I've made the mistake of buying some that claimed to be vegetarian and then when I got it home and looked closely at the ingredients, discovered casein in the list of ingredients.

If you prefer to eat vegan, make sure to ask about dairy in the black bean burgers.  Morningstar and Boca both have some that contain cheese.

Indigo Joe's (Stone Oak) has a tasty veggie burger, and at Chili's
and Bennigans you can get any of their regular burgers and substitute
a Morningstar black bean patty.

Some Subways offer the Veggie Max which is basically like a veggie
burger pattie. Or at any location, you can just get the regular
veggie sandwich which is just a regular subway sandwich, sans meat,
with whatever fresh veggies you like on it. They're pretty cheap -
$2 something for a 6 inch and $4 something for a foot-long.

Any sandwich restaurant offers veggie sandwiches - Quiznos, Blimpies,
Which Wich, Fireman's, etc. I personally love the Quiznos one the
best, but you have to make sure you tell them no cheese (unless you
want cheese). mmm mmm toastly, LOL

BTW, watch out for La Hacienda. We went there for dinner, and I was told that everything was made with lard. As I'm happily munching tortilla chips, he says "even those chips are cooked in it". GROSS and I was pretty upset about it. So, if you're vegetarian watch out.

It is hard to go totally vegan because of hidden ingredients - like lard in beans in some restaurants, etc.

Was just at HEB - found a canned chili sauce (just the sauce) but it had "reduced beef fat" - ewwwww - guess I will have to continue to make it from scratch.
