Order Up by the HEB in Lincoln Heights makes great veggie burgers. AND they have
a long list of extras you can add to your burger to personalize it. Totally
recommended.

That is the name of the vegetarian restaurant downtown, Green, right?
They have a Portabella they grill and serve in a bun instead of a formed pattie . . . but it has been awhile since I went there . . . .
I eat in alot - easier than finding places . . .

Can you tell us more about the "Portabella at Green?" I'm not quite sure what you mean by that.

Okay, Marie, now you have my curiosity up! I don't mean to play 20 questions, but I have been trying to figure out the restaurant you are referring to. There is a Gruene, Texas (pronounced "green") near New Braunfels, of course. But I cannot find a Green, Texas. Can you help me out here?? I'm always looking for good new vegie restaurants! Thanks again!

I went to a Subway off of Callaghan last and they had a Veggie Burger.
You can have them put it on any of the breads with any of the veggie toppings. (like their other subs)
It was not too bad . . . . not as good as the Portabella at Green . . . but ok for fast food.
Rachael Ray showed a veggie burger recipe recently too - very easy!!

I'm really just curious about the food and I like that it is
organized for a good cause. Yes, I love Indian and Thai food (next to
Green) and my fave Thai place is Thai Chili on Thousand Oaks and my
fave Indian restaurant is Simi's on Fredericksburg. Highly
recommended!!!

Ha ha! I thought I was the only veg who didn't like Green. I was
very unimpressed with their selection - everything is just fake
meat. They didn't have any meals that were what I consider truly
healthy, whole foods vegetarian.
Regarding Aladdin's, I have been there once and I agree with the
vegetarian combo, although it does have several fried items, so not
the most healthy thing. They also have a few meatless entrees that
are yummy. Everyone should definitely check it out - they are still
fairly new but struggling (I recently met the owner) and I would
hate to see one of the few restaurants in SA that offers veg food go
out of business. Hopefully we can all give them our support and
spread the word!

I definitely agree with you about the "wanna-be" meat. I've never had any of those dishes at Green, but the other things I've had there were pretty good.

This may be viewed as a treasonous statement, but I do not care for the food at Greens. It's mostly wanna-be-meat food, like tofu hotdogs. I much prefer wholesome food that does not try to be something it is not. Twin Sisters and the Thai restaurants, for example, work better for me.

Hi,
I hadn't heard about this event on the 4th. Thanks for mentioning it---I'll go for sure! (I also didn't know about Aladdin's Eatery, so I'm learning all sorts of things.) Tong's Thai on Austin Highway has some delicious vegetarian items, as does India Oven and the other Thai and Indian Restaurants. Green is the only all vegetarian restaurant in SA so far, and the food is quite good.

I had never heard about this restaurant until you posted. We tried it
a couple of month's back. Although my husband and my friend (non-
vegetarian's) didn't really like it I thought it was really good.

I am on the NW side (possibly the least vegetarian friendly place in the city*or one earth*LOL!) and have a beautiful backyard with pool. Do I smell a vegetarian bbq a cookin :D? I know a few other veggies with kids, so I think we should make it happen!

One thing that SAVS has not done a lot of are family-oriented events. We have a 3-year old and 5-year old and would be interested in a potluck that included families. What part of town are you in?

Anyone in this group have children? I would LOVE to meet other Veg families, but unfortunately my 2 year old is like a caged animal at most restaurants. Would happily put my place out there for a potluck type deal.

I think it's nigh time that this group has some kind of get together so all of us can meet and greet other Vegetarians/Vegans. Any suggestions?
Have you been able to find out anything at your local Taco Bells or in any airport Taco Bells?
Please let us know whatever you find out. If you're told that there's lard, and can see/get a label, that would be ideal. If not, writing down all information including ingredients, brand, company, lot number, etc., would be the next best thing.
Finding out if the Taco Bell Express is corporately owner or a franchise would also be very helpful.
Thanks again for all of your help!

Hi, everyone. This group is moderated by Kaz Sephton, who heads up the San Antonio Vegetarian Society (SAVS). The Society meets regularly and would be a great place for members of this Yahoo! group to meet. I know Kaz has been really busy and has not always had time to keep up with the Yahoo! group. I've offered to help her moderate and will let the group know when that happens.
Meanwhile, I'd encourage all of you to consider contacting Kaz and getting on her email list for events. You can email her at SAVS@.... Just ask to be on the email list for SAVS.
I'll also try to remember to post the messages she sends to that group, for those who have not or choose not to join it.
Happy eating!

Hi, I will be in San Antonio this Saturday, June 14th for some
shopping. I'm hoping someone can save me from having to "run all over
town". Does anyone know of a grocery store that has tomato paste in a
tube. I know I could order it on-line but with the shipping charges,
that's so expensive. Thanks to anyone who can help me.
Hi,
I am new to San Antonio and I am a vegan teen and my mother is a semi-
vegetarian. My mother and I are interested in coming to one of your
meetings, and would like to know when and where the next one is. I
would also like to know if you are teen-friendly?
THANKS!!
