Hi everyone,
after having read the informative and even invigorating thread on veggie burgers (my fave is OrderUp's with the Green Burger at close second) I thought I'd post a question that my wife and I have had for some time.
See, we both really love the thick totopos, the homecooked flavour, and the genuine ambience of corner taquerías. Back in Houston we lived just across Montrose Blvd from one of the (then) most venerated taquerías in town, and we want something a cut above TC's black bean taco, above Chacho's guac gordita.
I went to one out on the west side called Taquería DF, and it was wonderful and they ***said*** that they consistently abstain from putting any manteca (lard) in their tortillas and beans ("por razones de salud," they claimed, "for health reasons") ... I trusted them, because the way in which I asked (not "I'm vegan and do you put lard in this" but "Hi! Do you do this the traditional way, with lard, or do you use vegetable oil?") assured me that I was getting the truth.
Still, I wonder. Did I eat lard that day? It sucks, being put in such a quandary.
Does anyone know of a good taquería whose "vegetarian" options don't include the bodies of our curly-tailed friends?
(PS Watch out for the rice at TC -- there's chicken in it! and they put animal grease in their refried beans!)
Much love from one embattled SA vegan to all of you.
Cheers,
Sean
